It’s a tiny flaw in a magnificent package however. Vagrant Story is a groundbreaking mix of action, strategy, adventure, platform and roleplaying all rolled up together with a gripping and mature plot all represented on screen with breathtaking visuals in a highly distinctive and atmospheric style. If this masterful work of art is what Vagrant Stories accomplished director Yasumi Matsuno can push out of a five year old console, just imagine what how his Playstation 2 titles are going to play? Awesome stuff!
There are very few times you pick up a game with little or no expectations, and are truly astounded by it. This was one of those times for me. A coworker suggested that I pick it up, and I haven't put it down since. Xenogears and Final Fantasy Tactics, while seen by many as the "true" old school titles for the psx, pale in comparison to this neo old school game. Vagrant Story incorporates everything that I liked about older games (namely the difficulty), and everything I like about the current games (specifically good polygonal graphics and true 3D games). Don't walk, run to get yourself a copy of this game, and prepare to be enthralled for days.
One of the great things about my job is that I get a free vacation at the end of the year. One full week without the constant stress of work…I had hoped that I would be able to catch up on my stack of unplayed games, possibly finishing a few of the titles that I'd put off for a few months when new releases took center stage. This, unfortunately, was wishful thinking. I was only able to play a single game during my holiday break--not because I didn't have time to play more, but because it was such an incredible experience that I didn't dare take it out of my Playstation console. As the title of this review indicates, the game that stole my free time was Vagrant Story, probably the best game Square has ever made. Just about every aspect of the game made me proud to own a Playstation, so I'll do my best to fill you in on the greatness of the game.
OK, so I don’t have too many gripes (at least not about this game). All I can say is that if you don’t own this game you’re seriously hurting your ability to live a balanced life. I mean, Vagrant Story is like Cheerios, without it living is, well, pointless. P.S. If you can find it, buy the soundtrack. It’s kind of spooky, but just as good as what we’ve heard in the Final Fantasy series. I’m excited that Square has finally developed another game which could lead to a franchise, one I daresay could compete with the likes of Final Fantasy. One thing is for sure, go and buy this game. Beat it and play it again, then wait for the other games from Square this year: Chrono Cross, Parasite Eve II, Final Fantasy IX, et cetera. Just thinking about a Vagrant Story II makes me wet myself. Such a cool game…
From the opening cinema to the climatic and twisty conclusion, Vagrant Story hits all the right notes. Action/RPG fans are in for the adventure of a lifetime with this medieval romp. Hopefully this is only the first installment of a fine saga.
Game industry News (GiN)
The game warrants a perfect 5 GiN gems. After you finish there's a big smile on your face as you prepare to dive right back into the game to see all the secrets you couldn't do the first time. Not being able to wait to play the game again isn't an easy thing to do, as most players are exhausted after finishing a great RPG. Any game that can make you do that is a must-have. Word is that if Vagrant Story sold well then Square would release a sequel on the PS2. Well, the game is selling like hot-cakes, so I say to Square - we held up our part of the bargain now you hold up yours!
Vagrant Story is simply the best game I’ve played in a long, long time. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the game, and it never left me wanting more. I felt fully sated upon finishing the game, and I plan to go back and beat it again with the Evolve or Die! option on, and I will try to beat my overall Riskbreaker status. The lush graphics...the wonderful music and sound effects...the awesome story…they all lead to a fully satisfactory experience. I encourage you to go buy this game immediately. Don’t miss out on this Square classic. I am already anticipating Vagrant Story 2, and am looking forward to absolutely anything that the Final Fantasy Tactics team puts out, because they have proven themselves to be Square’s most valuable resource!
In the end, Vagrant Story's disparate parts come together in a beautiful, cinematic experience. The game's story is compelling and constantly urges the player to press forward, giving the game the addictive quality of the finest RPGs. While a fairly short game, the depth and density of the story and gameplay contained within give Vagrant Story an intensity missing from most longer games, as well as a higher replay value thanks to the "New Game +" option. While the learning curve is a little high, even for RPG veterans, Vagrant Story offers an experience that's not to be missed.
Not only is the game's story one of the best you'll find in a videogame, but it also rivals many of today's films. The game's goodness doesn't stop there as Vagrant Story is also blessed with a tremendously deep battle system, beautiful in-game graphics, and an engrossing musical soundtrack. Simply put, Vagrant Story is a true work of art and is one of the most cinematic experiences you'll find on PlayStation. It's not only one of this year's best games -- it's one of the greatest of all-time.
Vagrant Story is so complex a game that it can easily be extraordinarily hard and/or boring. Vagrant Story ranks high among every RPG I've ever played in nearly every category, and it's a shame it didn't catch much of a fan base. I honestly don't have a lot of complaints with Vagrant Story, and although I'll admit it's not for everyone, I do encourage everyone to give it a shot.
If I wasn't afraid of the weight of the statement, I would definitely call this the greatest game ever made. Instead, I'll just say it's quite possibly and probably the greatest. With in-game puzzles and so much personal customization, it has great replay value. The history of Lea Monde is as "haunting" as Hill House and Ashley's personal saga is as compelling as The Crow's. The main villain, Sydney, combines elements of my two favourites -- Kefka's insanity and playfulness with Sephiroth's tragic beauty -- adding new elements and emerging them into a whole that surpasses either. And the whole story plays out as elegantly (visually and structurally) as a Final Fantasy game.
As one of the final games for the Playstation, Vagrant Story excelled. It took an aging system and pushed it to its limits, doing stuff that no other game had done before. Not only was it visually appealing, but it had an expertly written story and managed to be (dare I say it?) fun at the same time. Unless you happen to utterly hate dungeon crawlers of any kind, I guarantee* that you'll find something to enjoy about this game.
Besides the sometimes crazy amount of time spent in inventory management, and the distinct lack of non-player characters to interact with and real towns, Vagrant Story is a Top Notch, Grade A, Action RPG. Everything from the graphical presentation, to the gameplay, to the soundtrack is just about perfect, and needless to say, the game comes highly recommended.
Vagrant Story is a full bodied single player experience built upon the seemingly simple game of "Simon." After all, it's still just the gunblade attack wearing a new dress. But what a pretty dress it is - curvy customizations, tight chain attacks, and sparkly exploration. Despite its somewhat limited action elements, Vagrant Story presents a unique RPG with terrific storytelling. And how about them bubbles!
All Game Guide
Vagrant Story may be shuffling in on the boxcar of the Square hype train, but it is on the whole an excellent game. Fans of dungeon crawls will be ecstatic when they get their hands on it. More casual role-players out there may be turned off by the heavy item management and the emphasis on exploration with minimal non-player character interaction, however. On the other hand, Vagrant Story stands to appeal to fans of games like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Metroid. There's plenty of exploration and discovery here along with large and nasty looking boss creatures, and it caters nicely to the explorers out there.
Game Informer Magazine
As with any PSone-era title, the graphics definitely show their age, but because of the game's comic book-inspired visuals, it manages to retain a look that feels more stylized than outdated. It's games like Vagrant Story that prove Square Enix is the master of all corners of the RPG genre, not just a Final Fantasy factory.
Overall, I have to say thai Square has once again done a great job at producing one of the greates RPG around for the aging PlayStation. No wonder this game got a perfect 40 score by Famitsu magazine of Japan. A must have for fans of the genre.
Players will have to be content with one ending, as there are no real multiple paths in the story line (although the game can't be described as linear either). Fret not however as this story is definitely one of the most engaging we have seen on the PlayStation for some time. There are plot twists around every corner and it is always fun trying to work out just who your allies are. The story is very political and contains a conspiracy, so if you find that sort of thing boring this game may not appeal that much. Even if you ignore the story Vagrant Story is still a must-have for action-RPG fans, so I won't hesitate in recommending this title as one of the best games of the year.
Besides the mechanics, there's not really a whole lot to discuss. You shoot things, hide, shoot some more things, and that's pretty much it. The graphics are serviceable, nothing flashy or noteworthy. The music is mostly terrible, ranging from irritating to extremely irritating. Surprisingly, there's not any environmental interaction like exploding barrels or the ability to shoot decorative objects. We're talking low-frills here, folks.
The one thing that anybody who plays this game cannot deny is the epic Vagrant Story portrays in the cutscenes. In fact, what kept me playing Vagrant Story was the desire to see what was going to happen. Who is Sydney and what drives him to be the man that he is? What are the dark secrets of Ashley's past? What the heck is going on?! SquareSoft can truly tell a story like no other company and the talents of Yasumi Matsuno is a true example of excellence. It also doesn't hurt to have Hitoshi Sakimoto backing up the story with his wonderful music. Casual gamers may want to avoid the hassles of the battle and customization system. But aside from some of the gameplay issues I mentioned, I would recommend any RPG fan and gamer to give Vagrant Story a whirl on his or her PlayStation. If you have time to spare, this is definitely a good way to spend it.
Although few aspects of it are overwhelmingly brilliant, Vagrant Story is another strong entry by the world's most popular and prolific RPG publisher. This one's solidly recommended.
Definitely buy this one if you're into micro-managing massive inventories, charting mazes and figuring out the exact spot to hit a lizard man. But if you're the type of RPG player who needs a lot of visual variety, character interaction and towns to explore, you should give it a try before you buy.
A complex battle system, spot-on visuals, and perfect musical score aren't enough to warrant picking up Vagrant Story -- on those merits alone, the game would be a basic enough dungeon crawl -- but the style with which everything is executed and the plot that ties it all together certainly justify the purchase. Vagrant Story is an immensely satisfying gaming experience that's still just as impacting today as it was the day of its release, and any RPG fan should be proud to make it a worthy addition to their gaming library.
Digital Press - Classic Video Games
This is one of the more polished games to hit the console during it's exceedingly long run. Even though it joins a very crowded list of RPG's, this one stands above for it's unique characters, fighting system, and storyline. This is a must own for a fan of the genre.
