Warzone 2100

In general, the graphics in Warzone 2100 are pretty much what you would expect of a recent strategy game: an overhead map view, but 3D, not flat, graphics that are pretty, but not overly so, and everything in a fairly small scale. The unique and refreshing twist in Warzone 2100 is that you can change the viewing angle.

The year is 2100 and the world has been thrashed by nukes. Out of the post-apocalyptic ashes a few budding colonies begin to form and rebuild the world. You’re in charge of one of them (The good guys, as luck would have it). So do you start building schools and purifying drinking water? Of course not. This is the video game universe, and if you want to rebuild the world the first thing you have to do is build the baddest tank you can. Then you have to build an entire fleet of them. Then you have to blow the crap out of everything and everybody who gets in your way. That’s the premise of Warzone 2100, the new real-time strategy game by Eidos. And if the story hasn’t sold you on its literary qualities alone, never fear. The game rocks too.

Warzone 2100 is een lekker spel voor iedereen die ook eens real time strategisch oorlog wil voeren in 3D. Maar aan het einde van de rit zul je je toch weer gaan afvragen waar je die CD-tjes van C&C en Warcraft ook alweer had gelaten want dat blijven toch de meesters.

If one were to be generous in the history of realtime strategy games on the PC, four titan games would stand above them all, Starcraft, Warcraft II, Command and Conquer, and Total Annihilation. On the PlayStation, there are less than a handful of RTS games. All of them PC ports.

Following a technical error in the satellite defense system, nuclear warheads were fired at Washington, Beijing, and Moscow. Minutes later, ground based sites fired in response to the launch. Millions died as nuclear firestorms wiped out the world's cities. Less than a million people survived the Collapse. Earth broke into hundreds of small rogue groups, and, as you would expect (they're humans after all), start battling each other over territory.

Un bon jeu de stratégie temps réel sur Playstation. Dans l'esprit, très proche d'un KKND : Krossfire par exemple. Mais sur le plan de la réalisation, c'est sans commune mesure. Les développeurs de Pumpkin Studios ont fait un très bon travail. Et les joueurs de jeux de stratégie ne devraient pas bouder Warzone 2100.

It's the future, and the world has gone all apocalyptic, but technology's advanced enough that you can build just about anything you want, as long as you have enough resources and can defend them against others out there who are just like yourself. That's the premise of Pumpkin Studios' real-time strategy game Warzone 2100, which was developed for both the PC and PlayStation, though it's been made more "actioney" for the console.
