If you are a hardcore X-Men fan, then Mutant Academy won’t let you down. Although it isn’t topnotch in the gameplay department, it is faithful to the design of the X-Men and is definitely a collector’s treat. For those of you who are looking for a quality fighting game that gives as good as it gets, rent this one and look elsewhere for a better one to buy.

Digital Press - Classic Video Games
The game provides a decent amount of fighting action with it's now outdated six button control scheme, and is definitely the best X-Men game EVER. Of course, looking back on X-Men games such as Arcade's Revenge on the Genesis and one realizes that that isn't such a bold statement after all. Definite rental, but a purchase should be thought out afterwards.

Overall, we are looking at a very unoriginal fighter with comic hero characters. There is nothing in here that we haven't seen in a Tekken or a Street Fighter over the years, and to be honest, those classics shouldn't really be mentioned in the same breath. The licence is a bit of a steal and deserved to have a title rather more worthy of it. As a game it offers nothing we would go out of our way for, but, as is often the case, the licence will rescue the publishers from oblivion. On the bright side you are given chance to unlock the many, albeit disappointingly brief, FMV sequences that accompany each X-Fighter, but after two or three you'll be questioning whether it is time well spent. The X-Men rate highly, but the X-Men game doesn't do them justice.

Hey, that X-Men movie is just around the corner, and Activision's X-Men fighting game is on store shelves just in time. Coincidence? Not by a long shot. Developed by Paradox - the company behind Activision's Wu-Tang: Shaolin Style and the never-published Thrill Kill - Mutant Academy takes a few pages out of Capcom's fighting game book, but not enough to make it exciting for any real length of time.

Super Play

Game Revolution
In the end, this is about as standard as fighting games come, though the strong graphics and smooth framerate keep it a step ahead of total mediocrity. Fans of the comic will get into it, but the rest of you 2D button mashers should probably stick with Capcom.

Super Play

All Game Guide
If you're looking for a slightly different fighter with some flash and game play that's familiar, but not quite the same as games you've been playing for a while now, you'll be set with your copy of X-Men: Mutant Academy.
