DescriptionAs with Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, a demo version of Pokémon Sun and Moon versions was distributed on the Nintendo eShop one month prior to the full release.
The initial scenario starts with the male trainer, Sun, visiting Hau'oli City with his mother shortly after their move to the Alola region. After meeting a local boy named Hau and fending off Team Skull thugs, Sun and his Greninja participate in one of the region's traditional Trials in order to grow stronger. On subsequent adventures, he can battle local trainers, catch Pokémon, and earn rare items. New scenarios open up to the player every few days after their initial completion of the demo.
The Greninja used in this demo is based on the one Ash Ketchum owns in the Pokémon anime, and comes with an exclusive ability that allows it to change form into Ash-Greninja. Upon completion of the demo, Greninja and several of the obtained items can be transferred to a Sun or Moon save file.

Data MiningAs the demo version was built from the full versions of Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, it was expected to contain much of the same data as the completed games. Although it turned out that most data had been scrubbed, hackers were able to find sprites of Alola's regional Pokédex, including several Pokémon that had not been revealed to the public at the time. Other residual data was used to confirm the number of new items and moves in the games, as well as the effects of some specific new attacks.
