In the end, Popful Mail is really the perfect game for the Sega CD format. You get some gorgeous visuals, beautiful CD-quality sound complete with a ton of voiced dialogue, and an extremely long quest to keep even the most veteran RPG player busy for 30+ hours. If you're looking for a solid action rpg and don't mind a nice platforming twist, then look no further as Popful Mail is one of the best games you can buy for the Sega CD system and in truth, is almost reason enough to own one by itself.

I recommend Popful to any one who likes WD's brand of humor, as well as a break from the usual, more involved RPGs. With that said I shall leave you now with the infamous words of Nutts Cracker " I gotta you now boomba hunter!"

Still, Popful Mail is a quality title that will keep you busy for a long time. Its colorful instruction manual is embossed, printed on heavy stock, and contains interesting translation notes. If you're a Sega CD collector, this is one title you'll definitely want in your collection.

Weapons and armor could be upgraded, and items were purchased to refill life in the battlefield. While basic in gameplay, the desire to further the hilarious storyline kept you glued to your Sega CD like few other games in the system's library, and still hauls booty today.

You owe it to yourself to check this one out. The story is great, the gameplay is tight and fluid, and the voices and music are awesome. This is the kind of game that made Working Design famous, and the type that seems to be slowly fading from video games today.

I go back to PM every so often, just to see the cut scenes (did I mention there are several in the game?) and to hear the music. It's not that expensive and well worth getting. The next time someone tells you there are no good games for the Sega CD, toss this little gem at 'em!

Working Designs is now, well, defunct. But let us remember the happier times. Sega CD was not the first console that Working Designs published games for, but thanks to a little franchise called Lunar, the system did help put the company on the map. In between those two releases came another quality localization in the form of the sidescroller Popful Mail.

Heu ! Jouer à ce jeu!

Advanced dungeon goers will see through this one right away. There are no puzzles or challenges that they haven't faced before. But with solid gameplay, Popful Mail will entice both the adventure crowd and easy-to-please RPG gamers.

Here's a game that could've been Sister Sonic. Instead, it uses unknown characters. This little detail is insignificant, however, as Popful Mail is a descent game. The story is very humorous at times, fitting in with the Working Designs motif. This CD plays well and the choice of characters is nice. Popful Mail should be a good challenge for even the most hardened player. It's worth buying.

Popful Mail was originally released in Japan by Falcom, who designed the Ys series. This means it's as much of an action title as RPG and it's aimed at a slightly younger audience as well. However, the game has also been completely re-designed and re-vamped by Working Designs, so it doesn't matter how old you are, Popful Mail is pretty cool.

If you're a Lunar fan who just can't wait for the sequel, you might enjoy this game; otherwise, hold your horses, it would be great to see a role-playing game with elements of arcade-style fighting if it were done perfectly, but this one isn't.

A prozine posed the question: “Is this an action game or an RPG?”. After defeating the game in only twelve hours (I did not rush through it), my answer is that it is a 90% ordinary platform/action contest with 10% of RPG sprinkled on top. You collect gold and upgrade armor and weapons but experience points, level class and character attributes - standard characteristics of any RPG - are not present. This is a linear quest and each area on the map must be conquered in a specific order, as there is no map exploration. There are some cool anime sequences between each of the five scenarios but some very silly dialogue with the levels themselves. Many of the bosses and mini bosses do not pose much of a challenge because safe spots are abundant. This is classified as an RPG for novices, but it is more of a platform challenge with a thin story line.
