Populous II: Trials of the Olympian Gods

Games just don't gel much better than Populous II. It taps into those deep, primitive urges we humans have lo become gods ourselves and be all-powerful over lesser mortals. Give yourself the gift of godhood: buy a copy of Populous II.

Though it would be pretty sad to have to fall back on hackneyed superlatives like "awesome", "incredible" and "fantastic", all three are genuinely true of Populous II. For once, words really do fail me - which is a bit of a first for poncy gits like us who think we know everything. It doesn't matter anyway as there's not really that much left to say, apart from that Populous II is the best 16-bit-computer game that I've ever seen. Simple as that, really.

The best parts of the original game have been retained, while the gameplay has been further enhanced by some stunning special effects and more in-depth challenges. The result is, in a single word, incredible. Populous 2 unreservedly receives my vote for game of the nineties. But don't just take my word for it...

So, it all boils down to the fact that Populous 2 is a damn fine game, worthy even of a real god's attention. Now, where's the review copy gone? It's dinner time here and I just have to have another go.

Das englische Entwicklerteam Bullfrog ist pünktlich: Genau ein Jahr, nachdem Bullfrog-Boß Peter Molyneux versprach, die "Populous"-Fortsetzung bis Weihnachten '91 fertiggestellt zu haben, flatterte uns die Amiga-Version von "Populous 2" ins Postfach. Da sich am "Schaffe, schaffe, Häusle baue"-Spielprinzip nicht viel verändert hat, dürften sich erfahrene Himmelsfürsten schnell warmgespielt haben. Dafür sollten Veteranen aber auf einen noch größeren Zeitsprung gefaßt sein: Statt ins düstere Mittelalter reist Ihr bei Populous 2 in mythische Zeiten der griechischen Antike.

An Spiel und Grafik hat sich nichts geändert, leider fehlt die elegante Mausbedienung. Mit dem Joypad wird das Iconklicken etwas umständlicher. Von dieser gewöhnungsbedürftigen Einschränkung abgesehen, ist und bleibt Populous eine Perle unter den Strategiespielen.

Populous II ist, wie damals schon der erste Teil, eine Götterdämmerung unter den Strategiespielen. Insbesondere die PC-Version glänzt durch kleine aber äußerst feine Details, die man beim Amiga-Populous vergeblich sucht.

Spelet rekommenderas varmt till alla Megadrive-ägare, i synnerhet de med tendenser till storhetsvansinne.

Overall, Populous II is a high-quality title which helped Peter Molyneux to build his reputation. It's not much of a looker, but below the surface the gameplay is compelling and there's plenty of longevity. A must-play for any strategy fan, and certainly worth an hour or two of everyone else's time.

Może to być znakomite przypomnienie mitologii (niestety tylko dla osób znających trochę angielski) Istnieje także możliwość gry w dwie osoby, ale potrzebne są do tego dwa komputery połączone przez modem, lub port RS232.
