Basically though, it all comes back to the conquest aspect of the game, which, let's face it, is what most people are interested in. It's ruddy brilliant. A must for anyone into sheep, strategy and little Populous men, not necessarily in that order.

Powermonger is a very good game that has immense value for money and many unique and well-designed features (such as the seasonal changes). However, the niggly aspects take some shine off of what could, and should, have been a Sizzler.

Populous broke all barriers of computer game technology and scooped up handfuls of awards for design and sheer ingenuity at various ceremonies throughout the year.

But let me assure you, Powermonger still is a milestone of strategy computer game history. It’s very well designed, offers a complex and addictive gameplay and will chain you to the screen for a long time. That’s guaranteed! Gamers who have already got in touch with Populous or Mega-Lo-Mania, which are rather similar in structure, will certainly love this one. Even if you have never heard of those games, Powermonger is a strategy experience you will not regret, except you miss it! Thank you, Peter Molyneux! If I was your father, I’d have named you ‘master’ as second pre-name :)

A competent, mildly engaging strategy game, that lacks a magic ingredient to set it on fire.

It's complex, it's time-consuming and with 195 territories to conquer, it's big. All of which means it should adequately satisfy advanced gamers who love strategy simulations. Look elsewhere if you want high adventure and intense action, but look to Powermonger if you're in the mood for a long, slow pillage.

A good strategy game for those that like strategy games. I like the name of the game. It feels good to say it. Try it: "I am a Power Monger."

The brave new face of wargames... which looks suspiciously like Populous. Despite similarities to a certain other title, Powermonger really is an excellent game in its own right.

A very detailed war simulator, with good graphics and subtle sound. Action fans will probably shun this one, but students of armed combat involving troop movements, armaments and other motions will probably love it. A very long game, this title lets you do everything for your armies. Fans of the Koei strategy games will like this.
