Titus do not have a good reputation when it comes to the quality of the games they produce. Battlestorm, one of their recent releases, was above their usual standard and I hoped that they would continue to improve their products in a similar manner. After playing Prehistorik for a few minutes I was not disappointed. Graphics, sound and gameplay are all outstanding. My only complaint is that the puzzle element could have been taking a little further. A must for any platform or arcade fan.

Playing the game is a joy - it's tough but never really frustrating, although long-term playability may be in doubt due to the rather simple nature of the game. Sound is well done, especially the various tunes which add quite a raucous atmosphere to the proceedings. It's fast and furious and, at the end of the day, a good laugh. What you may not know is that Prehistorik was produced using the STOS game designer! Unbelievable or what?! Prehistorik isn't what you'd consider an essential purchase, but you certainly wouldn't be embarrassed with this in your software collection.

Likeable caveman platformer with plenty of 'quite nice' bits to it, but little that really stuns. Good, but buy Toki and (of course) Chuck Rock first.

Atari STThe One for ST Games
Prehistorik is definitely an attempt to jump on Chuck Rock's bandwagon, but not one that is going cause any major upsets outside of Titus' offices.

Although each stage has a number of new creatures to thump, many reappear from previous levels which smacks of creative redundancy. The gameplay is thus somewhat repetitive, with no real challenges or puzzles to solve, and it's also incredibly slow. This can be frustrating, and lacks the on-screen action that graced Chuck Rock. Despite picking up a clutch of awards on the Continent, it fails to impress.

Simple and enjoyable, with amusing graphics of a high quality and would make a good introduction to the world of platform games for the younger player. But it's not for anyone looking for a real challenge.

Unusual touches are the trampolines that help you to jump higher, and best of all, the balloons which let you control the main character as he floats through the air. This is one of the best games produced by Titus. It has simple, non nonsense gameplay and brilliant, melt-your-heart graphics. Even the baddies look cute – occasionally, you might find yourself sympathising with them when they "buy it"!

There you have it. A no frills few thrills straightforward "romp." The graphics are bright, colourful and decently animated, the sound is average and the gameplay unsurprising. Worth the dosh? Nope - it's too repetitive and bland, but some may like it. The most surprising thing about this is you wouldn't suspect it was written in STOS. Good job we told you then, isn't it?

If Prehistorik had come out about six months ago it may have fared better. Sorry Grawagars, Chuck Rock's got their first - and funnier.

The standard of playability is a bit rough and you'll sometimes find that you die due to no fault of your own. It's moderately addictive, but I can't see anyone coming back to this one after a few goes.

A nice enough little caveman romp, but it's not really an essential purchase.

DOSThe DOS Spirit

[Budget re-release] Hideous dedication and a top-flight joystick does pay off, but then you have to contend with the less-than-smooth graphics and decidedly repetitive gameplay. All those hidden rooms and extras do brighten things up, but it's mostly a case of plodding around, hitting things and moving on to the next screen. It's not much fun, and you can make your own smug comments about cave people and dinosaurs existing in the same time period in the space provided.
