It's not often that a game redefines an entire genre, especially one as overcrowded and tapped-out as the first-person shooter. But thanks to innovative game design, jaw-dropping environments, and a sci-fi story that puts big-budget Hollywood flicks to shame, Prey surpasses all expectations to become one of the best games of the year.

Prey is simply put one of the best shooters I have played in years. So what it take only 7-8 hour to complete? If any publisher will give us this kind of quality in games I'll be contended with a shorter gameplay, but I'll be gaining some beautiful memories and not to mention loads of pure fun. This is a title that will always leave us with a smile on our faces and the satisfaction of a great adventure!

With portal technology, out of body gameplay, and a killer pet hawk, plus the most vile and despicable enemy the galaxy has ever seen this side of the Borg, Prey will dominate your 360 gameplay time for weeks and months to come, and with the promise of future content, possibly years.

It may be an easy game, and it may be short, but it offers an extremely engaging and unique FPS single-player mode. Multiplayer mode may not be perfect, but it's good enough to be more than just an afterthought. Any 360 owner that considers themselves a fan of the genre simply must check out Prey.

So, does Prey deliver nearly a decade’s worth of expectations? Absolutely. The locations, weaponry (most of which is living) and fusion of frenetic firing action and puzzle-solving, all set at a pulsating pace with an everpresent accompanying sense of paranoia, make this game the perfect tonic to a Mac-gaming marketplace dominated by strategy games. You only have to watch the game’s disorientating pivotal abduction sequence to know that Prey means business. It’s big scale, high-drama and undoubtedly what Steven Spielberg would’ve liked to have done in Close Encounters, had his budget stretched further than a wind machine and a few dozen torches. Essential.

Prey is an old-school FPS at heart, it just happens to feature some new, innovative gameplay features. Those looking for a fast-paced adrenaline rush that happens to be wrapped in some great art direction and a gorgeous graphics engine won’t be disappointed, especially if that love of all-out action translates into a love of old-school online deathmatch. A longer single-player campaign and a greater number of gameplay modes would have taken Prey from a great game to a must-own, but considering the way the game ends, it seems likely the developers will have a chance to correct those mistakes in a sequel.

WindowsGotNext
Prey is one of the real stand-out first-person shooters of the last few years. It delivers an experience which is both refreshingly original and curiously old school at the same time. Expect to spend an equal amount of time exploring some truly mind-bending environments full of clever puzzles and blowing away waves of mean (if dumb) alien monsters. If it did a better job of getting me emotionally invested in the characters, and offered some more intelligent enemies, I'd be completely satisfied, but perhaps that will be left for the sequel so tackily made immanent by the game's ending. As it stands, Prey is really a testament to great design above all else. Was it worth waiting a decade for? Well, it may be long past due, but it's hard not to be glad that someone saw it through.

While not exactly as breathtaking as Half-Life 2, Prey can rightfully be called one of the best, if not *the* best FPS game of the year so far. Bottom line, if you are a FPS fan, you should go out and buy this one.

Overall, Prey is a fresh and exciting step forward in a market that always threatens to be staid and blinkered, and I hope future games will steal (not borrow) its innovation, its excitement and style.

Just a few years ago, you couldn’t mention the game Prey without also adding “vaporware” to it. However, that was then, and now the game that was initially in development nearly a decade ago for the PC is finally launching with a beautiful graphics engine and some truly revolutionary gameplay elements. 3DRealms’ Native-American/sci-fi epic has finally hit store shelves not only for the PC, but also the Xbox 360. Either way you slice it, PC or 360, Prey is a great game that was well worth the wait.

With gaming becoming a multi-billion dollar business, high-level game creators feel a pressure to both create a widely appealing title and something "innovative" that keeps the veterans from complaining too loudly. One programmer told us recently that the industry is obsessed with topping itself, which explains the ballooning budgets, staffs, and development time that goes into crafting the last eye-popping adventure. In this context, it seems unusual that someone would resurrect a dormant idea -- Prey -- and bring it to the masses, instead of sticking to tried-and-true franchises and sequels. Yet after the E3 video came out last year, one's impressions changed drastically. What before looked like a game that didn't drift far from the Doom mold became something new, weird and enticing. And after adventuring our way from one end of the game to the other, we can say that the video was just a taste of things to come.

Every once in a while, a game will come out that completely shakes things up. This year, one of the games to do so is Prey. The player takes on the role of Tommy, a Cherokee Indian who can't wait to get away from his heritage, to the chagrin of both his girlfriend and grandfather. However, all those concerns are soon tossed aside when cones of light start shining down from the night sky and the roof of the bar is torn open. Before anyone has a chance to figure out what's going on, everyone is taken aboard an alien spacecraft and soon processed in a multitude of ways. A mysterious figure frees you from the conveyor belt, and you begin your journey across the gigantic craft in search of your loved ones and revenge.

The bottom line is this, if you're a fan of the FPS, or if you've slept in this game altogether, now is the time to get on it, especially with its respectable thirty-dollar price tag. Even if you’re sick of FPSs, check it out anyway, because this is definitely not the time to turn your back on a game like this. Prey is a twisted take on the genre that shouldn't be ignored, that is, if you're not prone to motion sickness.

Tommy is fed up, he's been working as a mechanic on his tribe's reservation for too long now and wants to get out. Problem is his longtime girlfriend has no desire to leave her people and home. Tommy's grandfather keeps trying to instill a sense of pride and wisdom on the young Cherokee, but Tommy is not buying any of his meanderings and openly defies his elder. But those with the biggest chips on their shoulders are often the ones who must bear the most responsibility. You see, aliens have started an all-out invasion, not the subtle "Only I know what's going on" type of invasion, but rather the kind that's being broadcast on CNN. Tommy, his girlfriend and Grandfather have been sucked up into the belly of a spacecraft and along with countless other humans, are being turned into chum. Through an unexpected twist, Tommy is freed, finds some weapons and begins using some of the skills he picked up in the army on the plentitude of nasty aliens he begins running into.

Prey is a game that's easy to recommend. It features fantastic level design that make a fresh change from the usual FPS fodder. Coupled with a captivating and well told storyline, Prey comes together to be the game of choice if you are looking for an FPS that, if not perfect, actually does something new for the genre.

Other than being a little bit on the easy side, my one slight disappointment is that Prey is a tiny bit short. One extra section would have been cool, and if that section had been something a bit different to the rest of the game, we might have been looking at a great first person shooter. As it is, we just have an extremely good one and that is surely enough to warrant a place in any self respecting FPS fans' collection.

A great game overall, but let down on the multiplayer side. The single player experience must not be missed but in all honesty, after 10 or so hours of play you are wondering what to do next.

Despite being somewhat short (~10-12 hours), very linear and unremarkable in a few areas, Prey is a great game. It has more than enough unique moments to separate it from the rest of the FPS on the market. Altering gravity, walking on walls, the various puzzles combining the two and other things are all fresh things in a generic FPS world. So, if you're looking for a good-looking shooter to get you through the hot summer days, hunt yourself down a copy.

It’s been a little while since a first person shooter has scared the crap out of me. The last time a game did that, it was named F.E.A.R. and it had a specter of a little girl doing a lot of the scaring. Now we have Prey, the long awaited and (in a way) long-in-development shooter that not only scared the crap out of me but also has little girls that act as specters (although not in the same way as F.E.A.R did) . . .but that would give too much away right off the bat.

WindowsVideo Game Generation
Pros: An excellent mix of weaponry that has a wholly unique look and feel, even though most end up functioning in traditional fashion. Strong storyline for a FPS with several truly moving moments. Innovative manipulation of gravity, and just enough puzzles to spice things up. Incredibly polished graphics that deliver the grossest game world on Xbox 360, and one of the grossest ever on PC. Another wonderful soundtrack from one of the industry Cons: Only two multiplayer modes

WindowsGameSpot (Belgium/Netherlands)

Xbox 360UGO (UnderGroundOnline)
Prey is a fun FPS with cool puzzle elements, an enjoyable single player campaign and a time-killing multiplayer aspect. It's by no means revolutionary, but considering your 360 has probably sat and hibernated since Oblivion, it's good to see a solid title come out during the slow summer months.

Xbox 360Gamernode
When you break down all its components, Prey really does strike a few chords and come up with some completely new (and fun) concepts. However, the overall feeling that you're given throughout the game is that these concepts weren't as fully explored as they could have been.
81
WindowsGamernode
Don't get me wrong, this game does get going fast and plummets you forward with some impressive "WTF!" moments and some truly innovative ideas. But the whole thing is over far too quickly, and it feels somewhat hollow when it's all said and done. The weapons don't get as much of a workout as I hoped, the enemies never really get too hard, the puzzles are a bit blah, and you can't really die or get a Game Over. From a perspective outside the nitpicking, it's a really fun game; it's scary, fast, brutal, and very well executed. In the end, I can recommend picking this up. Despite its shortcomings, it's still definitely worth playing. It's not perfect, but it's damn close at times.

Xbox 360GameSpy
While it's not without its issues (namely some cheap combat and spotty online play), Prey is undoubtedly one of the most interesting games to hit the Xbox 360 so far. It introduces some unique gameplay mechanics in the wall walking and portals, and the Death Walk stuff ensures that you'll be able to sit and play the game for hours on end without getting frustrated. We're hopeful that Human Head is already hard at work on their next project (be sure to watch through the end credits for a glimpse into the future), and they better not make us wait another 10 years.

MacintoshMac Observer
Human Head has put together a good, original game thatis a worthy addition to the Macintosh first person shooter library thanks to a capable port by Aspyr. With a few bug fixes to the multiplayer code, the game could become a better value. Until then, the title is interesting, fun and engrossing and can be played briefly for 15-20 minutes at a time or played in hours-long sessions. Itis not perfect, but Prey is off to a good start and worth your consideration.

Xbox 360Xboxygen

WindowsHooked Gamers
Prey is an interesting game with fresh ideas and amazing level design. The puzzles feel unique and even the weapons, while not being really different from the usual generic first person shooter weapons, have a different feel to them. While I really didn't like the story because it's extremely predictable, I have to say it's engaging and you will find yourself frequently wanting to know what happens next (I can't believe they actually did that, I could see it coming from miles away. But surely they can't do this). Prey is definitely a good game that deserves to be bought, or at the very least you should give the demo a try.

WindowsGamerDad
Prey proves that there is plenty of fun left in shooting aliens, and also that there is still room for innovation in the genre without resorting to gimmicks that get tiresome quickly. The campaign takes between six and ten hours to complete depending on how many radio broadcasts you listen to, how long you spend figuring out some of the more challenging puzzles, and how often you find yourself 'death walking'. Coupled with a simple deathmatch mode that is entertaining just for having truly three-dimensional battles against other people, this is the most original shooter of the year. While the combat mechanics of the underlying DOOM 3 engine are not up to the level of SiN Episodes: Emergence or Half-Life 2: Episode One, this is a solid shooter that adult fans of the genre should check out!
80
Xbox 360Frictionless Insight
Prey's mix of overpowered weapons, Doom-esque horrors and metallic surroundings grafted to organic parts aren't enough to make it a unique first-person shooter. What makes Prey both unique and so much damn fun is they way it toys with gravity, using portals that warp space to make an otherwise linear game into a desperate, mind-bending, wall-crawling dash to escape the horrifying, colossal alien vessel.

Prey should be played by every Xbox 360 owner who enjoys a FPS game with a superb storyline. I should warn those who typically experience motion sickness in a FPS need to demo Prey first due to its dizzy gravity system. Even I got a little turned around occasionally. Due to the short single player game, Prey should be picked up around the $30 mark if interested in the multiplayer. Otherwise, rent Prey as soon as possible to delve into the intense single player action of Tommy's turmoil.

"Prey" is a fine example on how a great FPS should be. Great graphics, neat level design, excellent weapons and weird creatures. The game is full with weird twists and with the ceiling/wall walking you'll experience something you haven't experienced before. If you decide to buy this game, definitely try out the multiplayer because it's so much fun playing against other real players. If you haven't decided yet if Prey is a game that you'll like, try out the demo that is available at the Xbox Live Marketplace.

For 10 years of development time, it's hard to say Prey was worth it. At its core, there's nothing particularly different about its shooting aside from some interesting weapons (and no reloading required). The multi-player problems don't help either. Still, the single player's story, with a wicked plot twist near the end, is a worthwhile experience on its own. Its new ideas are welcome to the stagnant genre, and that's what makes Prey a stand out success.

Great ideas often arrive ahead of their time. Prey proves that statement holds as true for videogames as it does any other creative endeavor. A decade ago, the original announcement of Prey's development wowed the PC-gaming world with its much-talked-about portal technology. These "doorways" would allow players to step Rod Serling Twilight Zone-style from one place into another, without any logical connection between the two. But over the years, as the previews that talked a good show for a game that never materialized piled up, that wonder wore off.

3D Realms and Apogee's Prey has finally made it, emerging from its own adventure through development limbo, conquering team walkouts, multiple design phases and numerous crises along the way. Originally conceived, undoubtedly with a tinge of irony, alongside Duke Nukem Forever, Prey appeared in various manifestations throughout the 90's, which largely focussed around a Native American's fight against alien oppressors and the use of startling new technology from a proprietary engine created alongside the game.

Prey is a highly polished, attractive game, but it’s no work of art. Granted, it’s perhaps unfair to have such lofty expectations for a first-person shooter, perhaps the most played-out and limited game genre out there. Still, it almost seems that unless an FPS is truly inspired and original it’s not worth playing, as it’ll just end up feeling like the countless Doom clones you’ve played before. That said, Prey does introduce more new concepts than any FPS in years – behold its twists on such familiar elements as gravity and 3D space. Unfortunately, these innovations are mired in a game that feels by-the-numbers, otherwise.

Prey features an excellent campaign with a great storyline, fun weapons, and great multiplayer maps. However, it’s falters strike mostly in Multiprey with horrid lag and framerate drops, poor connectivity, and a distinct lack of gametypes. Death Walk making it impossible to die in campaign is a great thing for casual gamers, but more serious gamers will be a little annoyed.

A couple of years ago, you probably would have been branded as a lunatic if you had said that we'd ever get to play Prey. Many of the game's ideas were originally hatched a decade ago. The game was even shown off to press in 1997. But in 1998, Prey was canned so that the development team could move on to other projects, and it was assumed lost. It resurfaced last year with a new developer and new technology thanks to the engine that powered both Doom 3 and Quake 4. The end result is a pretty standard first-person shooter that offers up largely the same sorts of thrills you've probably come to expect from this style of game, in spite of some superficially novel twists.

"This place is fucked up!"

I'd probably give this game a 7.0. After completing it and experiencing the horrible letdown of multiplayer, I felt no need to ever fire it up again. Sure, it does some things different than your standard FPS...but it just doesn't do enough to make me care.

Prey has been a long time coming—it was originally announced in 1997, then cancelled, and then recently revived. Though it brings some innovative gameplay to the table, by the time you get to the end (the game’s only four to six hours long), Prey’s run out of tricks and it plays just like any other shooter.

Prey is a good, solid FPS. It hits many of the right notes, boasting nice graphics, a few inspired sound bties, a decent smattering of weapons, and enough enemies to keep the action nice and even throughout the game. The inclusion of gravity flipping, spirit walking, and portals definitely makes things more interesting, particularly when they must be used in creative manners in order to solve the various puzzles players will be confronted with. Unfortunately, the rigidity of the level designs, uninspired weapon design, and generic storyline keep Prey just out of reach of being an exceptional title. Couple this with the fairly low difficulty, and most players will find themselves confronted with a shooter that can be finished in one focused day of play if they wish it.

Summer's a rotten time for new game releases - we know this, but it's a good thing. It gives us a chance to, you know, go outdoors, see friends and family we've been "too busy" to see, not to mention indulge in an entire month's worth of football and the associated liver failure that goes with it.

It's interesting to see a game that can be as innovative and yet as simultaneously uninspired as Prey. The new first-person shooter developed by Human Head Studios easily clears the bar set by American McGee's Alice for some of the wildest level design ever seen in a first-person shooter, with environments that continually rotate along every axis and will literally make your head spin. If M.C. Escher made video games for a living, it would be easy to imagine him building levels like the ones in Prey. But despite this and other innovations, Prey never delivers the knockout punch, with a lackluster story and uninspired combat that don't do the game's innovations the justice they deserve.

Prey was originally announced in 1995, and has had a long time coming since then. As the years progressed, the game fell deeper and deeper in development hell. The game’s fate seemed to be unknown until 10 years later when it was announced again for the PC, as well as Xbox 360. 3D Realms was no longer developing the game, but instead producing it and Human Head Studios took over the development process. For the 360 version, Venom Games was given the task of porting it over.

It’s pretty much undeniable that the first person shooter market is inundated with a wide disparity in the overall quality of released titles. For every Halo or Half-Life, there’s always another Devastation or Extreme Paint Brawl 4 waiting to spring up alongside it. Then you also have middle-range titles, which are fun for a good romp, but don’t offer an exceptional storyline or groundbreaking gameplay. I like to think of Prey as being somewhere above this ‘middle ground’ – granted, the gameplay doesn’t introduce any of the new crazy and wacky physics-oriented hijinx that we’ve started to expect since Dr. Freeman’s latest adventure, but the storyline and presentation is certainly damn engrossing and well worth the experience. Given the available choices currently out there, the question exists on if Prey makes for a worthwhile addition to the average gamer’s arsenal?

Prey is an experience worth applying for, and though it isn’t exactly great value for money at six hours long (and the multiplayer, known as "MultiPrey", features just Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch), there are a few sights worth seeing, and the plot is a fraction more interesting than the Save The Earth, Save The Girl setup. Monotonous it can be, but it’s rarely frustrating or difficult to play. That said, if it was released in 1998 it could have been genre-defining, in 2006 it is merely genre-filling.

There's no doubting that Prey looks the part of a modern FPS, but, as always, looks can be deceptive. It's a fun game, but it's no great breakthrough in the science of what is undoubtedly a very crowded genre, and as such, most gamers will be better served with either a weekend rental, or simply looking elsewhere.

But don't let that put you off too much, the story mode might be flawed but there's enough here for a good 6-7 hours enjoyment, more so if you take your time and explore every last corner, and the achievements are easy for those into whoring their Gamerscore up a quick 1000 points. Prey has had a publicly troubled development over the last 10 years, and the lack of focus and a solid difficult curve shows through the veil of impressive graphics and neat special effects. It's not the killer app many were hyping it up to be, but it's far short of a failure too. Best experienced for yourself, then.

If you own a Mac, Prey is a fun play. There is creativity in some respects partnered with cliché in others. While it’s not the Halo for Mac that I had hoped it could be… it’s certainly a fun game. (Much more fun than Chess or Cro-Mag Rally, which is about the only gaming most Mac users are used to.) If you’re a Mac owner and a casual gamer, I’d recommend adding Prey to your software library.

3D Realms has been hard at work on a ground-breaking first-person shooter. You've read about this sucker for years. It's teased you at E3. It's the one meant to unify all the best qualities of the genre, the perfect harmony of style, substance and skill.

I think that the developers of this game got a little too excited about the whole gravity thing. They knew they wanted to allow us to flip rooms upside down, and I think in their haste to allow us to do that, they forgot about the things that we wanted. We want interesting levels. We want a variety of enemies that challenge us. We want cool guns to kill them with. Instead, the developers did what they wanted. They put doors on ceilings and tables on walls and little switches to hit to pull you where they want you to go. They forgot everything that makes games fun. They forgot about us. Prey just isn’t worth a purchase. It isn’t unplayable, but it just doesn’t deliver a fun experience because of laughably poor design.
