This is a game for the pinball enthusiast, collector, or would-be collector. There are lots of very unique features for a video pinball game that only pinball lovers and collectors can appreciate. Even those that don't pray to the pinball god but still enjoy the game can still appreciate the solid, realistic graphics, sounds, and gameplay. Overall the game plays very nicely and very similarly to a real pinball machine. If you cannot afford to buy a real machine and don't want to keep popping quarters at the local arcade, I'd highly recommend this (or any of the Pro Pinball games) which is why I give this game an 87.

The biggest drawback with Pro Pinball Fantastic Journey is that there is only one table. But considering what you get in the package, it's tough deal to pass up. For less than a few rounds at the scratched-up machine in the dark corner of the downtown arcade (assuming you can even still find one), you can have a truly authentic pinball experience right on your computer screen. If you grew up playing these quarter munchers, go ahead and - sorry, but it has to be said - take the plunge. You'll flipper over it.

When all is said and done, FJ is a pinball game -- only those who appreciate this type of gaming are going to be thrilled. Unfortunately there is no demo; I suggest you grab the demo of Big Race USA (listed on MacGameFiles) for an example of just how fast, gorgeous and realistic the Pro Pinball series can be. Overall I am thrilled to have yet another Pro Pinball title on the Mac, and many thanks to GraphSim for giving us a chance to enjoy it. While FJ will not blow Pro Pinball veterans away by any means, it could be a bridge for pinball “newbies” to enter the genre. Personally I think GraphSim should grab the rights to the other three titles and republish those as well, as they are getting difficult to find.

Granted, the Pro Pinball series is not for everyone. Even at an excellent price of $9.99, some people just are not going to understand why Empire Interactive would go through all the trouble of creating an accurate pinball simulator, and not exploit video pinball to its fullest by adding all sorts of impossible ramps to the table. But if you're a pinball fan, Fantastic Journey is a pretty amazing feat, and the price is definitely right.

In a nutshell, Big Race USA is a ramp driven game of pinball, whereas Fantastic Journey is more trigger-centric. The former is filled with cartoonish graphics - bright colors and neon lights make for a clean layout. This table is better suited to the younger or newer pinballer, while Fantastic Journey's darker tones and graphics are a good match for the old-schoolers. Plus, the 70's-styled music is much better than Big Race's.

It's truly remarkable how much work went into the graphics, but it's a shame how much of that is lost during the actual game. Fantastic Journey has plenty of customization options, and even the background music is excellent.

Fantastic Journey is simply a disappointment in light of last year's Big Race USA, an amazing game that is still delightfully fun to play, the pinnacle of the genre. Empire Interactive really "dropped the ball" on this one. I recommend it only for those who must have every PC pinball game. The rest of us can skip it, and mourn the death of pinball.
