187 Ride or Die is an interesting title that would have flown under the radar for many people but it has surprised us a little and really shows that with the right idea, right developer and right concept, gaming doesn't have to be as unoriginal as it may seem at times.

If you've got a limited budget then 187: Ride or Die is certainly a game worth a purchase. If you like fast cars and big action then this is the game for you.

187 Ride or Die seems to be just the latest in a barrage of “urban” themed games coming up, following the smash hit of GTA: San Andreas. In fact, in the next few years this will become the new “WW2 shooter” (read: hot fad) genre, according to most writers out there, this one included. And hey, that may not be such a bad thing after all. With sharp graphics, a sick soundtrack, and solid arcade action, 187 Ride or Die gives hope to this emerging genre.

The main problem I had with 187 Ride or Die is that it’s not gripping enough. It doesn’t stand out and impress you. Each and every Burnout game has always done this. It’s grabbed you by the throat for every single second you play. It wows you with its quality, its precise and slick handling, and it feels great. 187 RoD just doesn’t get your attention in any way, and it ends up being an average experience and nothing much more. The game does show potential though, but for now the circuits/routes are too small and closed in (there are no wide open areas like Twisted Metal or Carmageddon’s), the game isn’t fast and frantic enough, and doesn’t excite me as much as I thought it would when I first started playing. It’s worth looking at if you can get it cheap or rent it out, but with another potentially superb Burnout game coming along soon, it’s very difficult to recommend you spending your hard-earned on this title.

The basic racing is fairly well done, if repetitive; but attempts to broaden 187's scope, such as the Twisted Metal-style combat levels, serve only to frustrate. I did enjoy the escort missions, and the co-op is decent, but they can't hide the fact that 187 is just plain mediocre. Oops, I mean mediocrizzle. My bad, playboy.

Overall, 187 Ride or Die is a competent but uninteresting combat racing game that looks good but is dragged down by dumb writing and poor performances. While there are some laughs to be had at the game's expense, there certainly aren't enough to make this game worth picking up. If you're a sucker for bad writing, rent it for a few days.

187 Ride or Die leaves no aftertaste. Six months from now you won't be craving another bite. At the start of summer when game releases were scarce, this could've scored big in the rental world from gamers looking to kill time. (And even more so from gamers desperate for the fall gaming season to start.) Really it shouldn't matter what time of year it is. If you're seeking a Burnout, Twisted Metal or Need For Speed clone to fill the void until their sequels arrive, you'd be better off playing the games you already have.

GameSpy
187 Ride or Die is a prime example of a game that tries too hard to "fit in," instead of trying to make a name for itself. If a little more focus had been placed on adding depth to the game, 187 could have been a solid title for Ubisoft. Instead, comical use of lingo and the otherwise average presentation make 187 Ride or Die feel more like a poser than a player.

GamingTrend
187 Ride or Die feels like a game that wanted to try to cash in on the urban hip-hop movement. Even the manual is littered with catch phrases that are supposed to reflect the dialect of the culture and draw you into the experience. Unfortunately, no mater how "hip" the culture is for the background story, without a good game, it falls flat. Take a ride, and let this game die a quick death.

GameBump/Gaming Horizon
187: Ride or Die has all the markings of a quick cash-in, following in the wake of the GTA series, most notably, San Andreas with its mid-90s ‘hood theme. Its low production values – limited variety of gameplay modes, cookie cutter story, and bad scripting – really kill any potential this game had. Single-player is fun for an hour or so, and the multiplayer and online modes will add some more time you spend with the game, but not much else. You’re better off playing Mario Kart, Twisted Metal, and Grand Theft Auto separately than playing this.

Game Over Online
187 is one of those titles that you wish went in one of two separate directions: either it focused on the storyline and made an urban crime story, or they made a combat racer with a different theme. As it stands now, neither premise works in this title, and the game really isn’t that engaging. If you’re looking for a racing game or a combat game, this really isn’t the one for you.

Electric Playground
187 Ride or Die is one of those games that tries to make a name for itself off of the success of others. The game attempts to appeal to the masses by throwing in a little bit of everything, but fails to excel at anything. There's not a whole lot wrong with the game, but unfortunately there's just not a lot that's right with it either.

Game Chronicles
Although 187 Ride or Die tries hard to mix tried-and-true gameplay elements from a number of wildly popular games, the result comes across more like tired-and-phony. While not a total loss, it definitely is not worth the price of admission. If you really want to give 187 a go, I would suggest calling a friend and sharing the fun. Even so, you would still be better off spending your dough on Burnout: Revenge, which should be out as you read this.

187 Ride or Die isn't a horrible game; it's just let down by repetitive race types and rubber band AI that can really annoy you after a few hours' play. Bar the awful slang and constant swearing the game is presented pretty well, and the online play will please anyone who enjoys the single-player game. There's enough here to warrant a night's rental as there's some simple racing action to enjoy. It just becomes tiresome far too quickly.

Worth Playing
Gameplay-wise, 187 is mediocrity hampered by bad mechanics and ambience. Theme-wise, it is, at best, a parody, and at worst, downright insulting. It is not fun to play, it hurts the ears, the eyes, and the mind. It takes a lot for a game to do that. I hope someone reworks the admittedly good 360-degree shooting idea and puts it in a good car-combat game, but outside of that and the soundtrack, this game shoots itself in the foot with everything it tries.

IGN
Ride or Die is a game that should have focused less on exuding street cred and more on gameplay. Larger, more varied race courses and greater differentiation between the weapons would have gone a long way towards making this game more enjoyable. Midway Arcade Treasures 3 comes out in September and includes a full version of San Francisco Rush 2049. Twenty minutes with that classic game is all it takes to realize that the concept behind 187 has been done better many times over. Don't be blinded by the bling, 187's poor track design and loose controls will at best provide a weekend's worth of entertainment.

The racing and shooting genre has been done before, and done better than 187. And if the looks of next-gen games are any indication, it's a game type that will be around for a while -- perhaps even moreso with the improved visual capabilities that can show off what a game like this can do. But 187 is ultimately only a minor distraction on the way to those next-gen titles. One that can be fun in short doses, granted, but one that lacks a compelling reason to spend more than a couple hours with it.

Cheat Code Central
Graphically the game looks about as good as it plays, which isn't a compliment, just in case you weren't paying attention. The animation is stiff and the characters all look like blow-up dolls. They move like them as well. The music is repetitive and even though I hate rap the lack of variety is sure to grate on everyone's nerves. The voiceovers are not bad but the dialog is awful. Whomever wrote this script just doesn't have a clue. 187 Ride or Die is bad - but it's not so bad that it's good. There's nothing good about it, period.

187: Ride or Die is a game that could have been much better, had it not focused on trying to cram as much Gangsterite gibberish up its Los Santos as possible, and instead focused on creating a game which was enjoyable, distracting nonsense. The small, regimented courses and samey weapons selection, coupled with bad handling on every vehicle lead to a game which outstays its welcome in only a few hours. It is unfortunate that the title of this game should offer a choice between “riding” and “death”, because in a game so lacking in enjoyment, it's really no choice at all.

Video Game Generation
The game may be called 187 Ride or Die, but you will do both, over and over and over again. You might even 187 a few times, I don't know, I still haven't figured out what that means. A solid car combat game is in there somewhere, but it is dragged down by its own repetitiveness and attempt to capitalize of some of the more recent crazes. In an era of lazy Grand Theft Auto-clones, this game is the laziest, and comes off as Grand Theft I-can't-get-the-hell-out-of-my-Auto. At its best, this game could have been considered the lovechild of Mario Kart and GTA, and at its worst, well, it is nothing more than what it is. All in all, 187 Ride or Die had potential, but it squandered it.

VGcore
This could have been a great game if there had been more depth to the story and the voice acting wasn't so horrible. It's not what gamers have come to expect from Ubisoft, that's for sure. It might even be a stretch to say this game would make a good rental. If you're looking for a driving game with a little more to offer, check out the new Burnout Revenge instead, and let this one rot at the bottom of the bargain bin.
