So many features, so much depth and a simple control interface n this is a footie sim that's more than just balancing numbers in tedious-looking stat charts. Looks like another trophy for the canny Scot.

You can see the logic... you want a manager to endorse your football management simulation, so you go for the best, hoping that some of the manager's prestige will rub off on the game. As such, the ruddy-faced Manchester United boss can be found grimacing from the packaging and loading screen of Alex Ferguson's Player Manager 2001, the first managerial title for PlayStation2. Sadly, Sir Alex's influence has not extended beyond lending his craggy features to the game. And while this latest incarnation of Player Manager is by no means a wash out, it lacks the variety and longevity of its PC counterparts, making it more of a mid-table manager such as Walter Smith than a Fergie.

Overall Alex Ferguson's Player Manager is a huge disappointment and apart from the necessary changes it's exactly the same as the playstation version, complete with problems. It is the best football management game on the PS2 simply because it is the only one. I can only suggest that you do yourself a favour and buy the last instalment of LMA instead and use the backwards compatibility of your machine.
