Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare

Ska man klaga på något är det att fienderna kommer tillbaka fast man har dödat dem, och att spelet kanske är lite för svårt. Och det faktum att laddningstiderna i PlayStation2-versionen känns aningen för långa. Me ndet är petitesser i sammanhanget. Har du en PlayStation2 och gillar äventyr ska du ha Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare. Men det är knappast värt att köpa konsolen för.

Alone in the Dark lijkt soms een saaie aangelegenheid met al dat lezen en puzzelen maar de sfeer van de game laat niets te wensen over.

J'attendais énormément de cette édition PS2 et les mois qui ont séparé sa sortie des autres versions me confortaient dans l'idée qu'elle serait la meilleure de toutes. Ce n'est malheureusement pas le cas (à titre indicatif, elle se situe au même niveau que la version Dreamcast). Un très bon jeu quand même qui vous changera de la série de Capcom.

Selten hat ein Spiel bei mir dermassen gemischte Gefühle geweckt wie 'Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare'. Anfangs weiss das Spiel vor allem durch die hervorragende Gruselatmosphäre zu begeistern und bietet nebenbei noch eine anständige, wenn auch nur in einigen Details der PS2-Power angepassten Grafik und eine stets gelungene und mitreissende Soundkulisse. Leider lässt das zu Beginn ausgeglichene Gameplay gegen Ende stark nach und bietet, abgesehen von der Taschenlampe, die es bisher nur auf dem PC in vergleichbarer Form gab, schlicht nichts Neues. Zu Empfehlen ist 'Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare' auf jeden Fall allen 'Resident Evil'- und natürlich 'Alone in the Dark'-Fans, da deren Hingabe zum Spielprinzip sie am ehesten über einige Macken hinwegsehen lassen. Ansonsten sollte jeder, der ein solides, wenn auch nicht hervorragendes Horror-Action-Adventure sucht, zumindest einen Blick riskieren.

Overall this is a very positive review however I cannot help but feel that some of the unique identity of Alone in the Dark has been lost. The puzzles are now quite straightforward and in previous games I cannot recall this being the case. If it wasn't for the story, torch and backgrounds this would be a bog standard Resident Evil clone but it's a dramatic improvement over number 3 in the series. I hope that the next instalment keeps the upward trend going and carves out its own identity. Alone in the Dark 4 is well worth your time if you are, or once was a fan of the series or Resident Evil.
