Get ready for some not-so-serious monkey mayhem on PlayStation 2.
Get ready for some serious monkey spanking - as Ape Escape 2 swings onto the PS2. Following hot on the haunches of the massively popular Ape Escape, this fun-filled action adventure packs in even more simian-swiping shenanigans.
Accidentally mixing up his professor's intelligence-boosting Peak-Point Helmets with a cage full of mischievous monkeys (as you do) has left young Hikaru in a bit of a pickle - and he must do all he can to reign in the newly IQ-happy monkeys before they go ape.
Heading up the primate platoons is the dastardly Specter who, combined with his Freaky Five, will stop at nothing to enslave the human race and take over the world (who could have given him that idea then?). So, armed with only brains, a net and some nifty weapons, you, as young Hikaru, must put a stop to the monkey rebellion. As you progress, you'll earn additional monkey-bothering devices, including water pistols, clubs, hoops and a brilliant new banana boomerang that should stop any errant apes in their tracks.
You won't have too much trouble spotting the absconded apes, as along with sporting the latest in designer headwear, the now-intelligent monkeys have gone all bashful and opted for a nice line in pants - the stylish little blighters. The rule of (opposable) thumb here is definitely hit first, and take pant sizes later.
Once you've got the hang of snaring the monkeys, and moving around the bright and colourful environments, you can concentrate on bagging extra credits too. There are Gotcha Chips hidden about the place - collect ten and you can access some great mini games, including Monkey Football, Monkey Dance and Monkey Climb.
With 20 enormous and stunning levels to explore, such as a Shaolin temple, a beach resort and even a moon base, Ape Escape 2 is an absolute delight from start to finish. And if you're hungry for more, there's the option to play through a second time, with added areas to investigate and spangly new weapons to help you out. And if even that's not enough to sate your need for hot monkey action, then why not play all over again as Hikaru's cousin and hero of the original outing, Spike. There's also an opportunity to demonstrate your superior monkey snaring skills to your mates, with the fantastic two-player option.
A cracking sequel and a corking game in its own right, Ape Escape 2 is easy to get into and hard to put down. There's never a shortage of things to do and it all looks and sounds great. Monkey bashing has never been so much fun, and the gameplay is intuitive and rewarding. Kids will love it, with its cute graphics and uncomplicated premise, but this game is definitely one for all the family.
