It has been quite a year for Codemasters, not only have they managed to pull out a number of stellar racing games for the Xbox (ToCa Race Driver 2, anyone?) out their hat but have also managed to hit upon gold with Colin McRae Rally 2005. While the series just kept getting better and better, it was hard to imagine the series reach a point of true excellence--that is, until now. That’s right, 2005 sees the best Colin McRae rally game that gives RalliSport Challenge 2 a run for its money.

Colin McRae Rally 2005 is the best rally game I’ve played in a long time. The handling just feels oh-so right, and the cars look stunning. There’s enough to keep you busy here for a while thanks to the new career mode, and after you’ve gone through the offline modes, there’s also the online mode to try out, which extends the lifespan even more. Despite a couple of flaws and a strange lack of reset button, this game is worth selling your mother for. If you didn’t sell her to buy last year’s version, that is…

Colin McRae Rally 2005 is the best rally game I’ve played in a long time. The handling feels oh-so right, and the cars look stunning. Velen zullen misschien denken dat Colin McRae 2005 niet veel meer is dan een jaarlijkse update van de serie. Dit is zeker niet terecht gezien het feit dat er gewoon vele goeie en nieuwe opties in het spel zitten die ook dit deel zeker de moeite waard maken. Zo is er de geheel vernieuwde carreermode, waar je vanaf het begin begint als jonge coureur en je via kampioenschappen naar de top probeert te werken. Daarnaast zijn de parcours nog uitgebreider dan voorheen en is het spel er grafisch ook zeker op vooruit gegaan. Voor velen kan de nieuw geïntroduceerde multiplayermode een reden zijn om de titel aan te schaffen en online je medegamers uit te dagen. Voor de Xboxers is dit uiteraard ook mogelijk met Xbox Live.

Colin McRae Rally 2005 for the PC is another satisfying entry in the racing series, which has found commercial success in America despite the country's indifference toward the sport it portrays. With realistic physics, approachable yet challenging driving controls, and a convincing atmosphere, the PC version of CMR 2005 should not be overlooked. While it doesn't do enough to improve on some of the console version's shortcomings, it is still a fulfilling and well-executed racing game that deserves a place in every off-road racing fan's library.

Continuant sur la lancée de l'opus 04, la série Colin McRae nous fait aujourd'hui cadeau d'un cinquième épisode de grande tenue. Toujours aussi prenant, instinctif et complet, le soft de Codemasters conserve des bases plus que saines et s'empresse de vous les faire découvrir dans un habit de gala. Certes peu innovant et misant énormément sur sa popularité, Colin McRae 2005 enchante pourtant de manière indubitable et se pose comme l'un des jeux de rallye les plus réussis sur PS2. Prenez le volant et lancez-vous. Ca claque comme disent les jeunes.

Muszę jednak wspomnieć, że powyższy sąd dotyczy gry w trybie dla jednego gracza. Rozgrywka dla dwóch osób na podzielonym ekranie nie wygląda już tak „kolorowo”. Właściwie to w tym trybie CMR2005 prezentuje się raczej... paskudnie. Widać, że programiści celowo obniżyli jakość wyświetlanych tekstur i szczegółowość grafiki, aby zachować ultra-płynną animację. Problem w tym, że jednocześnie wygląd gry został poważnie oszpecony – na tyle, że wystarczyło dosłownie pół godziny gry z kumplem, abyśmy przestali interesować się zabawą na podzielonym ekranie. Po prostu odechciało nam się na tę grę patrzyć i zdecydowaliśmy się konkurować ze sobą po kolei, przekazując sobie pada po ukończeniu każdej trasy.

When seeing this title amongst the other assignments, a lot of memories started coming back because this game symbolizes my first year as Fragland reviewer. I wrote something about Colin Mcrae 4 as an application test in which I seemed to have succeeded. Now, almost a year later, its follow-up is laying on my desk. Who would not start thinking about the changes in his life then? How saying a few simple words and some support of friendly but determined people lead to one of the greatest changes for game-kind … I mean for myself but I did not realize the effect of things decided up until now. Luckily, I did get an opportunity to think about how fortunate I am. A fortune of which I hope will it never go away. Happy Fragday to me!

Colin McRae Rally 2005 jest grą z pewnością lepszą od poprzedniczek. Jednak w obecnych czasach konkurencja na tym polu jest niemała, by wymienić chociażby Richard Burns Rally czy nadchodzące WRC 4. Czy Colin wygra starcie z innymi tytułami z tego gatunku, czas pokaże. Na razie mogę stwierdzić, że gra warta jest zakupu.

Det här är inget annat än en besvikelse rakt igenom och ett tydligt bevis på att serien är på väg att dö. Utvecklingen sedan originalproducenten lämnade skeppet efter del tre har pekat rakt nedåt. Ett bottennapp som svider illa när man tänker på spelets föregångare.
