From the opening scene to the final credits you will be in awe. In fact I found myself still sitting on the sofa long after the game had gone back to the menu screen. Just sitting there, dumbstruck, with the controller still in my shaking sweaty hands. Just sitting there, thinking of what I had just experienced, thinking of the story and how it had concluded, thinking about all the things that had transpired between the characters and thinking of all the monsters I had slain. Looking back on it now, the game made me feel proud, not only proud to be an exceptional warrior, but proud that I had done my world a great good. Play it once, it is good, play it twice, it will be better.

Now comes the hard part; who would’ve thought sticking a number at the end of this review could prove difficult? Is it a nine or is it a ten? Devil May Cry 3 is the best action game on the current generation of systems; it has everything you could ever want in such a title within the genre – including the most important facet of all, depth – and lots of it too. The only thing left now is to pretend the second one never happened.

Bez cienia wątpliwości, trójka stanowi najbardziej udaną odsłonę serii devil may cry. Brawo, Capcom! Znów dokonaliście rzeczy wielkiej.

I wish I could convey in words just how good Devil May Cry 3 really is. I know that I've already gone on for three pages with reasons why I think you should care about it, but I'm not sure if I've done it enough justice. Just believe me when I say that Dante's Awakening has everything. It has the fun, the depth, and the look. It has the reason to skip school, the reason to call in sick to work, and the reason to reconsider that Friday night date. It has five difficulty settings (all challenging, most insane), plenty of secret missions, unlockable bonuses and costumes, an easy to use interface, and more brain-twisting puzzles than the first two games combined. In other words, it's the reason you bought a PlayStation 2, now go and enjoy it.

Devil May Cry 3 is simply one of the best action games of the year so far. While we don’t yet know if it’ll toast God of War, it’s definitely a must own for any action buff. So, stop reading this review and go buy Devil May Cry 3.

Game Vortex
Without question, Devil May Cry 3 is one of the hardest games on the PS2, but it’s also one of the more entertaining ones. Once you swallow your pride and drop down to the Easy level, there’s a lot to enjoy with the game. After you take the training wheels off, the game offers even more depth and replay value. Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening is a must buy for any action fan, especially those looking for more challenge from their games.

DMC is one slick, fast, beautiful and challenging ride that packs surprises, bonuses and a one-of-a-kind experience that rekindles the love I had from the series debut. There are so many secrets that will keep you coming back as well as the addicting gameplay; you can’t go wrong. Consider the Devil May Cry franchise redeemed.

DMC 3's story takes twists and turns, but after twenty levels it ends exactly as it should: with an intensely gratifying finale that makes Dave prematurely squeal, "Game of the year!" Compared to Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, the original is just a minor episode. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go kick some 50-foot-tall hellhound ass.

Devil May Cry 3 might be plagued with a trippy camera and a hard-as-nails difficulty level, but it is a fine game non-the-less that should be in any DMC fans collection period!

Devil May Cry 3 is definitely one of the best games on the PS2. With excellent gameplay and graphics, Capcom has greatly raised the bar in the action genre. Offering a quality experience, which can be played many times through, DMC3 will keep anyone returning. With exemplary graphics and sound, it is virtually flawless in every way. For any PS2 owner, this is certainly a must-buy.

Overall it’s one hell of an experience that is definitely one of the key titles of this generation. A perfect example of how PS2 hardware can be used, providing tight controls, great graphics and good audio. It’s all you could want from a game that demonstrates a good ass kicking. Add in some extra difficulty levels with some bonus mini-games and a plethora of hidden extras and you’ve got some great replay value. This is all aided by some fantastic over the top cutscences that not even John Woo could think up. If you’re a fan of the DMC series or are just after a good action game you’ve no better starting point than this. As it’s a prequel, if you enjoy it you can go on to play the first and second and still be pleasantly surprised. I know I will.

Game Chronicles
Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening is all of that in one package. It has also managed to gain back some of the old charm and magic of the first DMC, while throwing in plenty of surprises to keep the series fresh. If you love this series, pick up this game. If you were one of the gamers disappointed with the second installment of the series, pick this game up and regain your faith in it. And if you've never played Devil May Cry, what the hell is wrong with you? Pick this game up, and you won't be disappointed.

Gaming Target
To the delight of many, Devil May Cry 3 brings the series back to prominence after DMC2 was a step backwards. Though it can be a rough 20 missions, it manages to be an extremely fun game despite the challenge and it feels like an accomplishment to beat this game, and not a chore. It's not for everyone – it's really a game for action game veterans – but DMC3 is one of the best action games to come down the pipe since the original game. With depth unparalleled for the genre in almost every way, from weapons to the way you deal with enemies, DMC3 will last you months upon months, mastering every nuance of the deep combat engine.

So overall for me DMC3 is the best in the series yet. Much better fighting, more action, great cut scenes and very challenging. The best action game on the PS2, go buy it.

Gluttons for punishment, rejoice! The ass-kicking of a lifetime has just arrived! Devil May Cry 3 beat me senseless, pured salt on my wounds, and told me to go home and cry to my mommy. As my blistered fingers and frazzled hair are a testament to, there hasn't been a game quite as arduous as this in a long, long time. Some people may view the unrelenting difficult as a major turn off, but I tip my hat off to the developer for not bowing down to the masses.

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening isn't Capcom's greatest achievement (that title probably goes to Resident Evil 4), but it's damn close. This third title makes amends for the previous game and shouldn't be overlooked. Hardcore action at it's sword-slinging best.

Game Informer Magazine
The good news is that we no longer have to worry about the Devil May Cry franchise falling into generic action game obscurity; Devil May Cry 3 rises from the ashes of the series’ sophomore slump with a vengeance that cannot be ignored. The bad news is that it seems pretty angry. Offering improvements that add a brand new dimension to the combo-driven demon meat carving, this title takes the concept of a hardcore action experience and contorts it into a humiliating position before administering a handgun enema.

DMC 3 is loaded with action, depth and replay value - all presented with some of the best production values ever seen on the PS2. You would still be impressed if this game were released as is on the Xbox. There are secret missions to unlock as well as a host of other goodies. There's no way you're going to finish this game in a couple of days and even when you do complete it you're going to want to go back for more. That's going to require a purchase. You won't be sorry - unless you suck.

Capcom really seem to be on amazing form just lately. Resident Evil 4 was a truly superb game (only lacking in its provision of subtitles) and Devil May Cry 3 is another stunner that will impress all who play the game. The game is fiendishly difficult and the less dedicated gamers will probably want to give in early on in the game but our advice is to stick with it and as soon as you've navigated the game's learning curve you'll appreciate what a superb combat system this game has and indeed what an excellent piece of work the game is.

PSX Extreme
Altogether the game is best summed up as a crazy mix of the first two Devil May Cry titles, with a bit of innovation and a more upbeat Dante. The action is flawless, which is all that is really important in a game like Devil May Cry 3. With a host of unlockables, it will keep the average gamer 10-15 hours to complete, but for us purists, there is new difficulty level to unlock and more gameplay that will keep you playing for a long time. Devil May Cry 3 is a game that all fans of this genre should own, especially if you enjoyed either of the previous games - just be prepared for an extremely difficult journey.

Devil May Cry 2 has its own place in video gaming history as a gigantic misstep. How does someone take the first game, a stellar title in its own right, and make a sequel to it that’s a large drop in quality, gameplay, and general experience? Fans bought the game based on the title alone, and then were subjectively burned, like a second date gone horribly wrong. But fear not lovebirds, the third game of the series is here (and has been for some time) that actually picks up the dropped ball from the second title (which was a crater in the ground at this point) and launches it into the stratosphere.

It's funny how prequels work. They're supposed to take place before the original story, which means there should be a bit of inferiority involved. To do that we have to deteriorate whatever it is that we loved about the original to make an additional chapter. Where's the sense in that? Why would we want to sacrifice all that we love about the original in order to keep the order?

The first Devil May Cry (already three years old, unbelievably enough) has influenced nearly every action game since its release with smooth moves and effortlessly stylish visuals. The second one, on the other hand, fell victim to its own success--it was so similar to all the Blood Omens and Van Helsings of the world that it failed to stick out as any real achievement anymore. Capcom took its time with the third game, though, and it shows because Devil May Cry 3 is one of the sweetest comeback stories the PS2 has ever seen.

In 'gunslinger' mode, Dante can leap into the air, pirouette downwards and create a twisting whirlpool of gunfire. As a 'trickster' he can zip behind foes, plunge his sword between their shoulder blades and zip away quick as a flash, while his 'swordmaster' persona lets him perform a whirling blade attack that butchers anything. And they get more and more ridiculous. Just when you thought things couldn't get any more harebrained, Dante starts juggling his pistols and riding his sword like a bull. Well, not literally, but you get the idea.

Devil May Cry 3 is the newest game in the DMC series from Capcom. The first game in the series is considered by many to be one of the best action games in the PS2. The second one in the series however, did not really offer the same amount of fun as the first, a somewhat average game. Seeking to remedy the situation, Capcom came up with Devil May Cry 3, which in many ways improves upon the original game and takes the series to the next level. DMC3 is a solid action game with memorable boss fights, addictive gameplay, tons of weapons, and a fighting style that rivals many fighting games out there.

Gamer 2.0
Despite the number three in the game's title, the subtitle is Dante's Awakening for a reason. This is actually a prequel to the original Devil May Cry. With that, the game features a younger, more immature and cocky Dante as your main character of use. Since the game takes place before the events of the previous Devil May Cry titles, it'gave Capcom the chance to try out a few new things that can make the gameplay a lot more innovative, and you can bet that new directions have been made with the overall gameplay to fully enhance the player's experience of actually being in control of Dante.

Digital Entertainment News (den)
In the end, DMC3 is an adrenaline-laden, horror-inspired action game that has rediscovered its sense of cool after a series misstep last time out. Graphically superior with an enhanced combat engine that pulls super-cool moves out of FMV and allows you to pull off the same sort of slick moves adds fresh appeal to a series that needed a strong bounce-back title to keep the series vital. Capcom has succeeded, as DMC3: Dante’s Awakening is not only a vast improvement over DMC2, but is arguably better than the very first, classic Devil May Cry title.

Dante, the half-demon with coolness written all over him, first appeared in Devil May Cry, one of the very best first-generation PS2 titles. Two years later, the half-baked sequel Devil May Cry 2 appeared and Dante was soon forgotten. Now, our hero has arisen again to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and he's all out of gum...

Get ready for some action that's so good it's liable to make you gnash your teeth and possibly smash your controller. Devil May Cry 3 is an appropriate about-face for the most memorable of Capcom's more recent franchises, one that started with a bang back in 2001 but flubbed its second outing two years ago. Now Devil May Cry is back, once again featuring the irreverent, inhumanly strong half-demon Dante in the starring role, and it easily presents the series' most challenging adventure yet. Devil May Cry 3 packs in a deep, outstanding combat system, plenty of spectacular story sequences, and lots of flair. Unfortunately, it's unbelievably, unreasonably difficult at first.

When the original Devil May Cry blasted its way onto the scene back in late 2001, the gaming world was knocked for a loop. Never before had there been such a fluid, over-the-top presentation of stylish, hardcore action with attitude and panache to spare. Then came the announcement of a sequel and expectations were insurmountably high. A fact made all the more painful when the final product of Devil May Cry 2 was revealed to be a bland and lifeless shell barely resembling the resplendent glory of its predecessor.

What Capcom have here is a flagship of a genre. Devil May Cry 3 is a showcase title, typical of the twilight years of an aging console. The game’s only downsides - painful difficulty and uninspired level structure - contribute to the old school theme, so whether it’s a post-modern reference or an ultimately shallow backtrack comes down to personal preference. Otherwise, its a detailed, consistent, artful slice of action adventure, bursting at the seams with the quality of the combat and visuals, optimised admirably by a developer who has learned the PS2 through and through – you wouldn’t want to miss out on that, would you?

When Capcom released the first sequel to their enormously successful Devil May Cry back in 2003, the general agreement was that the company had blown it. But the first quarter of this year has seen the company rectifying past mistakes. Even though Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening isn't as fresh as the original, Capcom has compensated with scads of content and hardcore attitude. It's a challenge that makes Resident Evil 4 seem tame -- this may be the most demanding, infuriating, and rewarding game we see in this last year of the PlayStation 2's life cycle.

Dishonour! How is it that a company as experienced at making games as Capcom can suppose that Western gamers are somehow superhuman enough to enjoy playing an already brutally challenging game on 'hard' mode by default? Hilariously, in this case that's exactly the gaff Capcom made when it elected to pitch Devil May Cry 3's default skill level at the same level as the Japanese version's unlockable 'hard' mode with its US and European releases. No wonder I was having a few issues. And there was me thinking I'd just become terrible at games overnight.

PS2 owners who wanted a Ninja Gaiden of their very own should consider themselves very well provided for. More than redeeming of the shortcomings of its predecessor, Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening is an action game par excellence, in the most classical sense. That is to say, it's hard as hell, just as deep, and completely unrelenting in pace. Almost to a fault, as a matter of fact -- if you've grown accustomed to the forgiving action games of modern times -- Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening will make to you crystal clear what things were like back in the day. It puts at your disposal an impressive array of destructive tools, then thrusts you face-first into some of the most challenging combat sequences ever experienced.

If Capcom's goal was to scrub the tepid memory of Devil May Cry 2 from everyone's minds, they have done a bang-up job of it. If DMC2 was a sleepy Gothic villa of a game, populated with meandering, action-free levels, DMC3 is the antithesis of that, with tight, compact stages filled to brimming with some of the most intense combat you've ever laid hands on. However, in the attempt to regain the propulsive energy of the first game, DMC3, cocksure and cavalier, surges well beyond what was necessary to make this a return to form.
