Summary
Based on the Chinese historical epic: Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Dynasty Warriors tells the legend of the Han Dynasty in China during the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Featuring sprawling battlefields and spectacular fight sequences, Xtreme Legends is a massively detailed, fast-paced adventure which, although identical to Dynasty Warriors 3, has ploughed in enough extra goodies to warrant being played as a standalone game in its own right. It also serves as a highly desirable expansion pack for owners of the original third outing. Hurrah!

KOEI has created some neat cross-game extras that'll please fans of the series, as well as adding to the depth of Dynasty Warriors 3. Amongst the snazzy options you'll encounter are the handy new fifth weapons, which can be transferred onto the regular version, and the opportunity to customise your bodyguards. Xtreme Legends allows you to play as any of the seven characters (Lu Bu, Diao Chan, Meng Huo, Zhu Rong, Zhang Jiao, Dong Zhuo, and Yuan Shao) right from the start, without the need to unlock them. You can also select your bodyguard from the characters on offer, and customise them to your heart's content; everything from colour, gender, weapons, and even names are yours to modify as you see fit.
Choosing characters from the main line-up as bodyguards means that you can now use double Musou attacks, previously only available in two-player co-op mode, for the single-player game. There are also four new challenge modes to get stuck into, including Speed mode, which requires you to get through a challenge in the fastest possible time, a balancing act mode for precarious opponent-battering action, a Combo mode in which you attempt to level the opposition by pulling off a succession of specials, and finally, the Iron Man mode, for a combination of all three of the above modes.
With some nifty new attack modes, fifth weapons and brand-spanking items, the opportunity to customise your bodyguard and the all-new 'Very Hard' difficulty level to test your metal, Xtreme Legends should keep fans of the series going until the release of the fourth instalment.
