NBA Live 2004 ramps up the defense and piles on the features for an impressive all-around game, but some game-balance issues remain. The name may have changed, but the desire to hold on to the championship remains the same. ESPN NBA Basketball 2K4 adds meaningful upgrades to its play mechanics and manages to stay one stutter-step ahead of the competition.

Long before the ESPN franchise got a hold of it, the NBA 2K series was one of the leading basketball games sports fans turned to when they wanted a guaranteed great basketball title. Well I’m happy to report that its new incarnation, ESPN NBA Basketball, is still a sports game fans can turn to when they want an excellent basketball title. For the sake of the review, we’ll go into the reasons why.

Antoine Walker is still on the Celtics. There you have it. That's what's wrong with ESPN NBA Basketball. Okay, there are some other things too, but nothing that stops it from being crowned the king of the courts, the cream of the cream of the crop, the best basketball game of the year. Besides, that's what online roster updates are for. This is one of those games where the more you play, the more you appreciate the little things.

ESPN NBA Basketball is the continuation of the NBA 2K series of basketball games, a franchise which was born on the now-defunct Sega Dreamcast. Despite the series' relative youth, compared to other basketball franchises, the 2K series has always been known for fantastic graphics and excellent simulation-style gameplay. This year, the developers at Visual Concepts have kept all the hallmarks of their earlier games, and they've added a new control system called "isomotion." This system lets you execute juke moves on offense, and it gives you the ability to counter these jukes on defense. The team has also added a unique gameplay mode called 24/7 that is so addictive, it's likely that many players will spend more time in 24/7 than playing standard games. If you are planning on buying only one basketball game this year, ESPN NBA Basketball is the one to get.

Trotzdem Kompliment an Sega: Es gibt derzeit kein besseres Basketballspiel!
Overall, the title of ESPN in the SEGA Sports games is really hurting the quality of them. Football was sub par compared to earlier versions and so is Basketball. 24/7 mode and XBL play will keep you into the game for a little while, but soon, you will just be wondering why SEGA ever added ESPN to the title and made the series start to stink.

I am going to be honest. I am no sports enthousiast, I never was en never will be. However, playing “This Is Football” or “NHL” on the magic black box has entertained me for weeks. The same principle can be applied with “ESPN NBA”.
Game Revolution (Oct, 2003)
After four years as the undisputed king of the video game court, Visual Concepts’ 2K basketball series finally got some real competition in last year’s NBA Live 2003. The old standby got its act together with revamped graphics and innovative control, a long-awaited upgrade that continued in this year’s solid NBA Live 2004.

While pro basketball fans have spent the off-season wondering what impact LeBron James would have on the new-look Cleveland Cavs, PS2 hoopsters spent their time wondering what effect the full-blown ESPN-branding would have on Sega's perennially strong 2K basketball series. Well, just as it looks like the Cavs are ready to take it to the next level thanks to King James, and Sega's ESPN NBA Basketball has been kicked up a notch and is only a tweak or two from joining Sega's gridiron game in the must-have category.
