Although it isn’t the best game in the world, Extermination really strikes a chord in me for being such a good evolution of the horror adventure genre. It is fun to play and has an intriguing story, even if that story is a little obscure at times. Still, with all of its merits and drawbacks, I can only write so much in a single review. I didn’t even get to mention the fact that each of the monsters you meet can ‘power-up’ making it harder to kill, and that monsters don’t respawn, letting you ‘cleanse’ an area. I’m giving Extermination a big thumbs up, with only a few points shaved off of the top for minor implementation bugs.

Ever since Resident Evil on the PSOne five years ago now developers have been trying to cash in on the "survival horror" craze. Some attempts have fallen way short of the mark but this game is pretty good overall. This game has also added a couple of neat touches such as the flashlight, jumping and infrared targeting. It's a shame the game couldn't have been polished off a little more but fans of the genre are likely to enjoy this title. Extermination is a decent action game that Playstation 2 owners should consider.

Sure it’s pedestrian and predictable, but who cares? It delivers the goods as promised; nothing more, nothing less. You want blood? You got it. You want door and key puzzles? Soup’s on. Scary aliens? Natch. It’s like a well made summer movie. You buy your ticket for big scares and bloody action, not innovation. If you love survival horror, you should play Extermination. You’ll like it, at least until something better comes along.

Who'd have thought that Sony and DeepSpace's first stab at the survival horror genre (they dub it "panic action", but we know better) could actually eclipse Capcom's mighty Resident Evil series in some respects? Extermination does just that, introducing several refreshing play mechanics and pumping up the action considerably.

Not survival horror tension, mind you, but it still gets the heart beating at an accelerated rate. The gun-mounted light is a good idea, and the PS2 helps create some nice effects with it. Solid is probably the best word to describe Extermination. If your pockets are deep enough for a solid game, then I say go for it – it won't disappoint. If you have a bit more discriminating taste, you won't lose sleep passing up this one while waiting a few months for Metal Gear Solid 2.

Fans of Resident Evil have been looking forward to Extermination, Sony?s survival/horror game from ex-Capcom programmers and producers. Despite the pedigree, the result is disappointingly mediocre. The game doesn?t stray far from the formula: Extermination trades killer zombies for space worms, then throws in a limp love story in an attempt to, er, flesh things out. The world is more interactive than Resident Evil?s, but interactivity has its drawbacks: Rooms don?t remember that you?ve been there, so broken crates are magically restored if you leave and return.

Just Adventure
Extermination isn’t a game that attempts to break new ground. Instead, it just builds on what has been done in previous games and attempts to go one better – on this point it succeeds.

It’s hard to really recommend a game that barely brings anything new to the table, which is why I’m kind of thumbs-in-the-middle for Extermination. The game isn’t horrible, but it’s not a classic either. It’s a passable attempt at Survival Horror that at the very least is playable and worth playing through once to see what happens. Just keep in mind that Extermination, despite a couple cool gameplay creations, is not Resident Evil. Perhaps some sort of sequel will iron the “bugs” out. It’s not a bad game, just not great. It’s a good way to tide you over until Silent Hill 2 and Devil May Cry hit later this year, especially for diehard Survival Horror fans.

Extermination has a number of rough spots. It starts off so slowly that it seems like it's never going to pick up, it suffers from several long, frustrating stretches, and its first boss fight goes on far longer than it should. The game has its positive moments as well, but it never quite comes together in as compelling a fashion as others of its class. It's far from being poor and is certainly entertaining at times--it just lacks the originality and extra level of polish needed to provide a truly memorable gaming experience.

This game may not be the best in the survival horror realm, but remember its an "action panic" title. But the game isn’t bad, but probably won’t have much replay value for most of you.

Extermination is great as a survival horror "hold-over" snack while you wait for the "A" list titles to appear, or if you simply must own every single title the genre has to offer. It's mechanics and gameplay may annoy you, but if you liked John Carpenter's version of The Thing, you should be able to buy into (and enjoy) the storyline. Definitely rent the title before you decide to buy... you're gonna need the money for Code: Veronica and Devil May Cry soon enough.

When Extermination was first released, it was fairly decent buy because there weren't any games like it on the PlayStation 2. Since then, however, Resident Evil CODE: Veronica X and Silent Hill 2 have been released, two superior survival/horror games (that are actually scary). And with Devil May Cry just around the corner, it's hard to recommend Extermination as anything more than a rental. Unless you have a lot of extra fifties lying around, spend your money elsewhere.

It's just that Extermination is just an above average game and nothing more. If you're looking for something to keep you busy until the newer Resident Evils, Syphon Filters or Metal Gear Solids, this will probably do you just fine and you'll find that it's a lot of fun. But, don't expect something that'll be on par with the likes of Resident Evil 2, Code Veronica, Syphon Filter 2, or Metal Gear Solid, because Extermination just isn't a something that could be classified as a great game. It's not that bad, though. Not bad at all.

All Game Guide
Extermination is a solid entry in the genre, but it doesn't do much that hasn't been done before in games from Konami or Capcom. The gun upgrade ability and infection meter, for instance, can be looked at as souped-up versions of the weapon attachments and poison meters in the Resident Evil series. The game does warrant a look from fans of the genre, however, and should tide players over until the release of CODE Veronica or Silent Hill 2.

PSX Extreme
In the end Extermination feels more like a disappointment rather than an impressive title. The game doesn't have the feet to carry itself up, as one of the PS2's "decent" titles. Hardcore survival horror fans may like this game, but casual gamers should wait for Capcom's long awaited PS2 release of Code Veronica X instead, that is unless you haven't played the Dreamcast version. The visuals aren't what we've become so accustomed to on the PS2, and look more like 1st generation than 2nd generation. The gameplay feels dull and can get redundant from time to time, and the audio needs work. Like I said, just wait for Code Veronica, period.
