Favorite character

Since my last two Final Fantasy threads were successful I figured I would put up another one. My favorite character and I believe a lot will concurr would be Auron because he has no funny accent or weird hair style. He's just a bad ass with a big sword and a lot of great one-liners.

There can be absolutely no doubt about that. Auron brings the necessary element of coolness into the traditional Japanese effeminate melodrama and is way more interesting than anybody else in this game.

Actually, all other FFX characters except him suck, plain and simple. Also, all other characters except him are badly voiced.

It's still a great game, though :)

User AvatarI have to agree with Auron. He has the most enjoyable presence, personality and voice.

However, since Tidus voice reminded me of Michael J.Fox... So yeah, I like Tidus (but not when he is doing those wimpy noices). Especially Tidus the Narrator.

I think Jecht had a cool voice too.

Anyway, the only character I couldn't absolutely stand was Yuna - I just can't stand that pathetic weakling thing she had going on.

All the rest were just mildly annoying. Oh, except Kimahri Ronso - he was okay too.

Overall, I think the voice acting wasn't bad, it's just the voices themselves that were unlikable. The dub has a lot of unnatural "mmh's" and pauses and the original's Tidus and Yuna talk in a very unlikable high pitch. Actually the dub's and japanese Yuna are the same.

She's your stereotypical Asian girl. Submissive, dependent, and has no opinion of her own.

I could live with their voices, but not with their silly dialogues.

Man, it's amazing how much better FFXII is in this aspect. Really night and day.

I'm not so sure about Yuna's dialogue. She said she wants to do this but the entire time her dialogue to me said "lets just get this over with" or something like that. Plus, I'd be a little timid if I had no parents and lived on a island with a goth, a walking furball and an orange spiky-haired jamaician wannanbe. On a side note I don't if you noticed Tidus actually made a reference to the macarena dance when they were talking about Macalania Temple in Guadosalam.

Man, that was just too funny, hehe, I loved this description :)

Yep. Ideal dream girl candidate for a wife for every conservative on the place of the planet. Myself included. Die feminists, die! :p

Yep, I know its sad. But I'm the only one that knows that. :p

User AvatarSucks to be conservative.

Explains why most wife-beaters are conservative though. And why they get caught so often with male prostitutes and what not.

That's what I thought too, my friend. Now I can only tell you one thing: there is nothing more dangerous than deluding yourself into thinking that such a woman will bring you happiness.

Submissiveness is not kindness. Dependence is not love. And lack of own opinion is not ability to make compromises.

In fact, I know a certain person who is submissive and ruthless, dependent and cold, and has no opinion while initiating and provoking quarrels at every opportunity.

Don't confuse the issues, dude. You need a kind, loving, peace-seeking woman. Everybody do. But don't try to find her among those who possess the three "qualities" I mentioned before.

Wouldn't know. My conservative indoctrination in seeking for a hentai sex-slave does not compute with my logical brain that requires intellectual stimulation from the opposite sex. Or any sex for that matter. Oh, I do wish I had a one-track mind sometimes instead of a double-sided Apple diskette that has random errors on either side. :p

P.S. My favorite character is the bloke with the bad haircut in shorts. Whatshisname.

User AvatarSo. Persona 4 reinvigorated my fayth in jRPGs and after having played it to utmost completion I've decided to take the only FF I haven't seen yet (apart from FFXI) for a spin.

I've just cleared the second temple in Kilikia. I like Tidus, of all a teenager protagonists in all Square games, he's perhaps the most likeable one. At least, he really does have no choice in tagging along with the rest of the group.

But those horrible shorts... Oh, my. Frankly, the rest of clothes is equally awful. All that belt action going on in Lulu's can't keep my face straight.

Anyway, wasn't the dance Yuna made to release Kilikia souls just all shades of awesome? I am ready to call it the greatest dance in a video game ever, for it is even better than one in FFVIII!

It was.

Nah, the FF8 one is better. Dig the retro-European style :)

User AvatarAhgh... Alright. These two games perhaps share the distinction of having the two most likeable dances in video games history.

User AvatarWhat are you two talking about? Obviously this is da best dance evah in a video game. Period. :-)
Re: Favorite character
Rabbi Guru (1238), Feb 14, 2009
User AvatarNo! You lie! This is the best dance ever in a video game.

I have won the internetz!!!

But seriously, Yuna's dance in FFX is the most magical, mystical and beautiful. FFVIII one is okay in comparison.

I also endorse FFX because I endorse all non-european fantasy settings. The world of FFX was a beautiful and unique place - I'd have to say, that my favorite FF world (not my favorite FF game though, I'm currently playing FFIX and it's owning). I haven't played FFX-2 yet, but it seems to me that it destroys FFX's world a bit.

The best part of FFX for me was the whole "journey" feel of it. It's the only game that made me feel that I really was on a journey.

A lot, not a bit. There are freakin' pop concerts in there. Not to mention a hippie politician with naked chest. Don't play FFX-2.

I also love the world of FFX. Dig the Thailand-like feel.

Hope you've got yourself a version with a good translation, I played a German version and the translation rocked. Plenty of social differentiation in speech, lively dialogues, etc.

The best part is when Zidane helps the Princess to climb a ladder and says "Soft..."

I don't think there are any differences between localized versions. At least not any major ones. I played the English version and that's how it pretty much was.
User AvatarI would endorse Fatima's belly-dance in Conquests of Camelot.

I fondly remember the deadly dance of Stiletto Anyway in Anachronox. In the very same game, the main protagonist Sly Boots (the one who drops his glass in this scene) could also dance in some freaky gay bar in the red light district. The animations of that scene were quite brilliant - so actually this game features two dances worthy of any top list. Unfortunately, YouTube doesn't seem to have a video of the latter one.

User AvatarA few quick thoughts on FFX in bullet point format:

  • The cast is weak even for a FF game. I didn't expected the ensemble of a FF game to be more than a collection of archetypes anyway, but the archetypes chosen for this game just don't fit each other at all.
  • The battles are nice. I liked the idea of boss battles having additional conditions and such, making them more like puzzles in adventures rather than a test of your endurance. (Use Thunder on crane to activate it, then use crane to deal massive damage). Your party members are very diverse combat wise, so you always have to switch them over, which effectively solves the problem of uneven levelling in other FF games.
  • I like that the summoned creatures now take a part in battle just like your other members, but still can perform devastating and lushly animated attacks if their overdrive gauge is filled. More control, more options. If handled correctly my Ifrit can produce up 10000HP of damage.
  • The monster areas have plenty of semi-random encounters with other travellers, summoners, crusaders and such. I think it makes exploration much more interesting, at least it doesn't feel like "here's a completely empty area just for about five random battles in a row".
  • Blitzball is either the greatest thing ever or a silly joke. After five games without a single score, I haven't decided yet. Note to self: need to investigate further. But at least this is not a simply another card game.
  • The visuals are nice, although constant switching between low and high poly models of characters in the mid-game can be jarring at times.
  • CGI cut scenes are epic as always. I particularly want to note the editing, which is nicely structured switching back and forth between pre-rendered and ingame cinematics without ever losing pace. It's nice to see the movie department working in such close connection with the rest of the team.

Overall, I'm quite satisfied so far and very eager to continue my journey through Spira. See you soon

User AvatarOverall, I'm quite satisfied so far and very eager to continue my journey through Spira.

Glad to hear that. It's a great game, like always in FF it's all about emotion, and man, this one is the peak of the series from this point of view. It's a tear-jerker, and if you ignore the weak characterization (FF9 had much better characters, no doubt), you'll be able to enjoy a bittersweet, beautifully melancholic story.

It's a game with soul, that's what matters.

Can't say the same about FFX-2, though...
