EARLIER THIS YEAR STUDIO Cambridge released Primal, a game that received fairly positive reviews with its mix of action, exploration and puzzling. Fairly quickly they have now followed this up with Ghosthunter. Built using the same engine Ghosthunter is a similar style of game to Primal, and those who relished playing through that title may well be interested in this new offering. In fact many of the gameplay mechanics in the two games are quite similar. This is not to say that Ghosthunter is necessarily unoriginal in a bad way, but players who have experienced Primal will feel they are on familiar ground.

As common sense will tell, technical brilliance can only take a title so far. But, when a game's outstanding engine assists in delivering a truly atmospheric, immersive experience, it can often work to overcome minor faults present in gameplay. Ghosthunter has the technical brilliance down and the sometimes lacking gameplay. Even though the powerful technology behind this one may allow us to overlook a touch of redundancy and a few numbing puzzles, it's the atmosphere, the artistic flair, and the dramatic splash of style -- the experience -- that truly makes this a worthwhile purchase.

Worth Playing (Sep 02, 2004)
As stale as the title ‘Ghosthunter’ may sound, the game is actually pretty creative and original, if only a tad formulaic in terms of puzzles and progression. There are more than enough things going for the title to offset the fairly substantial disappointments of its detriments, however. With its intriguingly familiar ghost hunting story elements, wholly impressive graphics engine, and multi-perspective yet fully functional gameplay system, Ghosthunter almost feels like a sign of things to come. Almost.

Basically, you’ll run from one area to another, taking out all the ghosts that appear and picking up the items along the way and then progressing to the next area. Ghosthunter isn’t that hard of a game and you most likely will finish it after a few times of sitting down and trying it, but with the visuals, game play features, and great combat dynamics you’ll keep coming back for more and have fun each time you play it.
GameSpot (Aug 16, 2004)
Sony Europe's Ghosthunter is a rare breed of third-person action game. A cursory examination of what it has to offer would show a fairly by-the-numbers action game with pretty graphics, a shallow, rudimentary combat system, and too many linear and dull puzzles for its own good. However, upon second glance, the game reveals far more than what you would initially discover. In fact, over time, Ghosthunter proves itself to be a wonderfully atmospheric game that balances creepy and campy better than most other games that have tried. Through its impressive graphics engine, excellent use of voice talent, and well-told storyline, Ghosthunter is a game that should absolutely be played by anyone who enjoys a good, creepy action romp.
Whether you're an avid shooter fan, or Resident Evil fan, Ghost Hunter should please you. It implements enough excitement/shooting, with a mixture of adventuring and puzzles to make the experience varied, despite what seems to be somewhat tedious combat. After you get into the game, you won't want to stop. While Ghost Hunter might not leave you breathless with fear, it sufficiently supplements your shooting and horror needs.

I was totally caught off-guard by SCEE and Namco's Ghost Hunter, a game that actually slipped under my radar. Oh, I'd heard of it, to be sure. However, with the market full of horror-themed titles and miscellaneous shooters, a Capcom game coming out around the same time called Monster Hunter, and a holiday season full of two holiday seasons worth of big-hitters, I totally lost track of this one.

It just hasn't been a good day for Lazarus Jones. Think about it, you're just a cop from Detroit, just doing your job. You were out on a routine patrol with your partner Anna. She's cute, no doubt, but seems to have this same You've been called to an old high-school to check out some wierd disturbance. Do you believe in ghost stories? Well, you're about to get a crash course in "Ghostbusting", so start believing in them. Welcome to Ghosthunter, a game that actually originated in Europe by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

In the story A Christmas Carol, an old miser named Scrooge is haunted by the ghost of Christmas past. The apparition conjures up imagery of Scrooge's history, trying to show him how the mistakes he made affected others, and how he can avoid them in the future. I'm not sure if the ghost of Christmas past has yet paid a visit to Sony Cambridge, but if he did then it clearly wasn't on one of his better nights. Because, in Ghosthunter, the developer has obviously tried hard to rectify the mistakes it made with Primal - but in doing so has only created a handful of new problems.
GamePro (US) (Aug 16, 2004)
Ghosthunter is a Teen-rated take on the Silent Hill and Resident Evil series, incorporating aspects of horror, action, and stealth, but ending up being Ghostbusters-like with a cheesy cop-caper flair. Though it overtly deals with the supernatural, the scariest thing about Ghosthunter is that the main character, Lazarus Jones, sports Luke Perry's eyebrows and Ethan Hawke's goatee along with Brad Pitt?s attitude. Every time he's on screen, you feel like punching him. Nevertheless, you must help Lazarus solve murders and capture wayward poltergeists.

GR is no stranger to the paranormal. One time, the alien skull above Ben’s desk began floating around the room, spouting off about how someone really needed to remake Mutant League Football. Or maybe that was just Ben. Then there was the time one of Shawn’s disgusting McFarlane action figures hijacked his keyboard to surf the web for porn’or so Shawn said. And of course, the compound is routinely haunted by the spirits of Jack Daniels and Captain Morgan. We’re cursed!

The survival-horror genre recently mutated, spawning an offshoot, known as the action-horror genre. The Suffering expertly proved that you don't need limited ammo and angular control to have fun with things that go bump in the night, and Ghost Hunter follows this mantra. Crafting a decent game in this vein may sound like a cakewalk, but Ghost Hunter proves it's a little more difficult than you may think.
The Video Game Critic (Nov 10, 2006)
Ghosthunter's real problem lies in its non-intuitive gameplay. Capturing ghosts should be easy and fun, but it turns out to be remarkably clumsy and confusing. While dealing with the shrieking pigs, you're forced to play a tedious game of hide and seek. Each stage challenges you to complete several arbitrary tasks, many of which rely more on trial and error than logic. Often it's just a matter of returning to an old location to trigger an event. I like the general idea behind Ghosthunter, but the game lacks flow, and feels artificially constructed.
Thunderbolt Games (Jan 28, 2009)
So all this leaves us with a horror themed game that lacks the power to induce even the mildest of shocks and scares in the player. A game with a camera that is broken and a sticky, unresponsive control system. A game that constantly ushers you down one set path from one dreary encounter to the next with perfunctory puzzling and some truly desultory "stealth" sections. A game that despite it’s good looks can only be rated a below average experience, because graphics count for very little when the gameplay is so dire and frustrating. Who ya gonna call? GAME actually, I want my money back.
