Game Over Online (Mar 18, 2002)
Gitaroo Man is a surprising, welcome diversion to the as-of-lately stagnant music/rhythm genre. Fans of previous rhythm games will eat this title up like a kid in a candy store, and even casual gamers who rarely enjoy games of this nature will surely find a place in their heart for Gitaroo Man. Quite simply, Gitaroo Man lays the funk down on all competing musical games currently on the market with enough left over style to put a particular K9 back in the doghouse.
HonestGamers (Apr 21, 2013)
Outside of Japan, Gitaroo Man was only produced in limited quantities. Indeed, anyone not too fond of Japanese kitsch is unlikely to play beyond the nappy-wearing guitar-shredding demon featured within the opening stage. Yet beneath the bizarre veneer is a satisfying, challenging rhythm game set to an unforgettable soundtrack. Gitaroo Man is a dream for genre purists, and is destined to live on as a fondly remembered cult classic.
From the inspired music to the quirky gameplay, Gitaroo Man will not disappoint. Go get it. Right now.

GamePro (US) (Feb 13, 2002)
The 3D graphics are smooth and colorful, but almost intentionally distracting during gameplay. Produced by the Japanese rock band Coil, the music is the heart and soul of this game, and adds serious replay value. This is good because gameplay gets hard fast, even if the difficulty level is set on easy. You can trade licks with up to three friends in multiplayer mode, which is just icing on the cake for a thoroughly enjoyable, if challenging, game.
Don't write this off as "more weird Japanese crap." Gitaroo Man is an original title that evokes more emotion than Led Zeppelin 4. I was worried it was made too easy in the Americanized version, until I got to Master's Play. I'm not worthy! Gitaroo Man embarrasses every other rhythm game out there. You win.
GameSpot (Feb 14, 2002)
Gitaroo-Man is arguably the most original and inventive rhythm game since the advent of Dance Dance Revolution or the original Parappa the Rapper, and it's easily one of the best rhythm games for the PlayStation 2. This is a must-own title for rhythm-game junkies, but the whole package is so compelling that it will also appeal to anyone who isn't a fan of the genre.
IGN (Feb 25, 2002)
Gitaroo-Man, sadly, has "niche" written all over it, but everyone reading this had ought to do their very best to make that niche as large as possible. A niche is too small to hold a game like this -- it has a huge variety of rocking music, fascinating graphics, and an original gameplay system that manages to hold up surprisingly well in comparison to the monotonous rhythm competition.

Gitaroo Man is a genuinely impressive little title with something fresh to offer fans of this rather niche market. As is usually the case, longevity is an issue here with only eleven levels to rock your way through, but the Versus mode is really quite a hoot when you've got an hour or so to kill after the pub. It's not going to be to everybody's tastes, but if you're a fan of Parappa and the like then you could do a lot worse than to pick up this charming example of rhythm-action.
