The only problem, then, is that it doesn't last as long as I'd like. The six basic mission areas each have an alternate mission that you can unlock, and the variety of mechs and weapons helps as well, but it would be wonderful to see a mission and feature set of Armored Core's magnitude in a game that plays this well. That I'd complain about that sort of thing is a comment on how well Gun Griffon is made, though. Enjoy it while it lasts, which is long enough, and look forward to the series' hopeful survival in the future.

In the end not only is Gun Griffon Blaze the best console mech shooter out there, but the best mech game since MechWarrior 3 for PC. The simulation like gameplay really makes Griffon an exciting game as soon as the disc is inserted into the PS2, the game may not be long but you'll be coming back to it quite often, just too bad there's no two player mode, that would have really shot the gameplay up. The graphics are superb, with a good attention to detail and the frame rates run at an ideal 60, so there is absolutely nothing to complain about. Fans of games such as Virtua On, MechWarrior and maybe even Armored Core, should really consider checking out Gun Griffon Blaze, it may not be the longest mech game, but it sure is the best so far.

Despite the aforementioned uninspired visuals and so-so sound, Gungriffon Blaze is a worthwhile game. The plot is engaging, the action is fast, and the game itself offers one of the better takes on mech piloting the genre has seen in a long time. Although most members of the mech genre incorporate a first-person view, this is the first game to do it in such a way that the control system, look, and feel of the game more closely resemble those of a PC-based deathmatch-style shooter. The result is a fun, strategic game that doesn't ram reality down your throat.

The saving grace for Gungriffon Blaze is its gameplay -- the controls are user friendly and easy to adjust to while the interface is clear and straightforward. The game balances things well by depleting the selected optional components from your reserve even if you don’t finish a mission. Unfortunately, it’s enjoyable for maybe a week. By that time, all five missions will have been finished and you’ll get tired of the bland graphics. If you were hoping for something similar to Mechwarrior 4, keep waiting. If you were looking for a new game to rent this weekend, you might give it a try.

Yet this game has the superior fighting engine, leaving both titles with decidedly different focuses and experiences, which just might be fortunate for fans who might have a preference for customization over combat, or vice versa. If you're into speed and tight combat control rather than detailed customization, GunGriffon Blaze is the game for you.
