In the end, Jak X is a fun race, even if it feels just a tad generic. The game really doesn’t do anything other racing games haven’t done in the past, but the action more than makes up for the lack of innovation to the genre. If you’re a fan of the Jak series or just looking for a fun kart racer, you can’t go wrong with Jak X: Combat Racing.

Game Chronicles
While I doubt this game can compete with the popularity of racing giant, Burnout: Revenge, Jak X is loaded with more humor, story, and explosive racing action than any other racing game in recent memory. This is easily one of the most addictive games I have played these past few weeks and is a must-own title, especially if you have an online connection.

Jak and Daxter fans should find the story very entertaining and everyone should find something fun about this game. Jak X: Combat Racing is easy to pickup and has great online play for that extra challenge. For the amount of fun provided I would recommend any arcade racing fan to add this to their library. High speed racing, guns, and explosions, this game hits all the major groups.

Jak X: Combat Racing does what it can to live up to Twisted Metal and other car combat franchises while staying true to the Jak name. The gameplay variety wasn't always necessary but is a welcome change for the genre – a few more changes with the inevitable Jak X sequel and they could form a new sub-genre.

Jak X might disappoint fans of the series looking for a platformer, but those who don’t mind being forced behind the wheel will find plenty of fun here. Fans of racing games that might not have played a Jak game should also clock a lap time.

Without a doubt, the Jak & Daxter series have redefined platform gaming and brought the genre back up to speed. With Jak 3, the so-called Precursor Legacy came to an immensely satisfying end. That, of course, meant bad luck for Sony, as every new part in the series sold well and received great reviews. Enter Jak X (or Jak X: Combat Racing in the U.S.), a spin-off of the venerable series. In a way that is reminiscent to its Crash Bandicoot franchise, Naughty Dog reunites the two heroes in an arcade-style action racing game. Can it live up to its Precursors?

Jak X: Combat Racing is an excellent racing experience for fans of Twisted Metal or Crash Team Racing. There is tons of action to go around, along with online mode and offline multiplayer. I guarantee you will have loads of fun with this game.

Ultimately, Jak X: Combat Racing lives up to the hype. Whatever flaws that bugged me in the circuit events were more than forgiven while playing the arena events. You need to take the game online to really get the most out of it, and if you can manage that, this is a definite must buy.

The Jak franchise has won many a rabid fan throughout its 3 iterations. When it was announced that Jak's next game's focus would be that of car combat, many a skeptical brow raised. During E3 when we previewed the title, it looked like it was on its way to be as polished as the previous titles, but not the exact focus that would elicit as much excitement or more than them.

Remember Crash Bandicoot? Naughty Dog created the little marsupial that would eventually become Sony's PlayStation poster boy. His first shirtless adventure was so successful it quickly spawned a second, Cortex Strikes Back. Later came Warped, the third and most highly acclaimed Crash. But after three Crashes, Naughty Dog lost interest and decided to take its furiously spinning freak into a new world of speedy danger. And so Crash Team Racing was born.

It's worth stating that Jak X doesn't really bring anything radically new to the racing genre. It's all been seen and done a thousand times before. From the notion of picking up power-ups on the track to winning cups and unlocking new cars, parts, and drivers, it's all pretty standard stuff. But that's not a bad thing. Naughty Dog has paid attention to what makes a good, fun racer. The end result is an experience that works very well. There are times where you'll hit a wall when running certain events, and even a few times where you'll want to break your controller into small hate-filled pieces as the CPU A.I. cheats you out of a gold medal, but you'll keep coming back for more until you win. And ultimately, that's the hallmark of a good racer.

Overall, this is a solid release, but not exactly a must buy. While the game has a lot of options, the fact that you can lose a race at the last second due to the glass-like crashing system, tied in with the aggressive AI, can lead to a lot of frustration when trying to achieve options. With that said, Naughty Dog attempted to give Jak racing gloves and go at it, and for the most part, succeeded.

As a non-serious racing game that manages to combine Wipeout and Burnout in carting form, Jak X has a lot to offer – at least if you don’t already own a dozen or so such games. With a plethora of upgrades and unlockables, as well as a decent-sized story mode and some enjoyable modes for stand-alone play, it’s undoubtedly good value for money (as video games go). However it probably won’t convert you to the genre if you aren’t already a fan and aside from online play, it offers little in the way of originality.

There are 24 different tracks and seven arenas, with the potential to unlock mirrored races through the secret shop. Despite the variety, many of the straight races feel familiar, and since almost all of them are available during all four cups, you don't get the sense that you're progressing forward to new levels--merely different areas in the same environment. That being said, the tracks are very well designed, and some of them are extremely long, which makes the races interesting, even if they are often familiar.

This is an awfully fun title; I would defiantly recommend this to anyone who ever wished they could strap a rocket launcher on the side of their car in Gran Turismo (or your racing game of choice). If you are not a big racing fan that I would recommend a rental to see how you feel about it, when you strap some weapons to your car it defiantly changes the feel of the game. Now if you are the type of game who is looking for realism then this is not for you, this is a carton style game; weapons, art, speed and language all emphasis the fantasy element of this title. In the end I still recommend that you at least try this game out, it’s defiantly worth a look.

The game does shine in online play (human opponents don't slam on the brakes for you), and the single-player campaign is surprisingly lengthy. Like all Naughty Dog releases, Jak X is phenomenally polished and plays incredibly well. It just stalls out early on and give players little reason to stick with it.

Cart racing has a few things that must be done absolutely perfectly for the title in question to stand up to the many great games already in the genre. Jak X, sadly, doesn't meet this bar.

The one remaining issue is whether we'd buy it. Sat here with our freebie copy, we liked it a lot, and enjoyed almost every minute of the many face-wobbling hours we ploughed into it. Sure, it's repetitive; sure it's not doing anything massively new, but what it does provide is an exceptionally polished genre offering that fans of the series and kart games in general can get a lot out of. Jak X is certainly a good pick-up-and-play title that's perfect for a rental over a weekend, and at a budget price we wouldn't hesitate, but right now, at full price we'd probably pass - but don't take that as an instant dismissal. You might be pleasantly surprised how good it really is; we certainly were.

Jak X Destruction Racing fits nicely into the action/racing niche carved out by games like Crash Nitro Kart and the immortal Mario Kart by attempting to improve upon the genre standards with a host of creative play modes and customizable options. But while the action is fast and the track design is refreshingly creative, things begin to feel a little repetitive after a while.

Gaming Age
It's easy to say that Jak X is the best cart racer in recent memory, though that's not saying all that much once you realize it's been almost two years since the last decent cart racer on any system. Still, the game has something to offer most genre fans.

Game Revolution
After three games packed with at least twenty hours of consistently engaging platforming, action and driving, it's difficult to see Jak X as anything but an odd diversion. Even taken within the context of combat racers (as the title requests) there's little to make it stand out. Longtime fans may well get a kick out of the proceedings, if only for Daxter's banter, but racing enthusiasts are advised to proceed with caution.

Ultimately, the problem with Jak X is that the underlying game is utterly generic. Strip away all of the characters and you're left with a racing game that borrows from the genre, but doesn't give anything back. With so many other racing options available for the PS2, there is little reason to pick up Jak X unless you're a hardcore fan of the franchise.

The game incorporates Burnout-style "kill cams" which show your enemy wiping out, but while watching these it's possible to lose control of your own car! The single-player cut scenes are not the least bit entertaining, and the little rodent Daxter is more irritating than funny. The guitar-driven soundtrack is pretty mediocre too. This game is best played solo, unlocking vehicles and tracks. If Jak X Combat Racing proves one thing, it's that "more" doesn't always translate to "better".
