Kessen II is an enjoyable enough game but it really just failed to grab me, I couldn’t find myself getting engrossed in it. The graphics were beautiful and the battles themselves were at first exciting because of the shear amount of action unfolding before my eyes, but after a while things began to get repetitive and I just found myself coming back to the game less and less. It has been improved form the original, there are new weapons and even elephants mounted by troops. The size has been greatly improved with a huge thirty levels available compared to the eleven that were available in the first. However as well animated as they are the cut-scenes and story that evolves during the game just begins to get annoying, it wouldn’t be so bad if it was just before battles to set the scene but there just seems to be a cut-scene for absolutely everything. The story being developed before you isn’t too original either.

To conclude, my take on Kessen II is one I would have never thought possible. I really liked this strategy title, and the romantic fantasy storyline is one of success. I would recommend this title to absolutely everyone who enjoyed the first Kessen title, as it explores new heights and boundaries in a genre that rarely flourishes in the category. If you are a skeptic and have a few bucks to try something wonderful, rent the game and at least be open-minded. You may even be more surprised than I was.

After all, even if you violently detest American voice acting, that should only be a minor obstacle to the enjoyment of a fine console strategy game. Kessen II builds on its predecessor by bringing the player even closer to the action, and it also manages to do something about Kessen's minor difficulties in the replay value department -- there are now more options between missions, more total playtime, and as before you can fight through a second campaign once the first is complete.

Kessen II might not be the most complex or challenging strategy game we've ever seen, but with a mixture of colourful graphics and easy to pick up gameplay it's perhaps a perfect fit for the PlayStation 2. Yes, the dialogue is exceptionally cheesy, the translations not always very good, and the cutscenes at times bizarre, but it's an entertaining and strangely involving game.

Along with all these additions, Kessen 2 also has a very high level of polish and showcases some of the finest-looking CG segments I've seen on the PS2. That, along with the professional voice acting, help create a game that will definitely set the standard for all future console-based strategy titles. My only minor dislike is that some of the battles can still go on for a bit too long. Aside from that, though, I wholeheartedly recommend this game to all Kessen lovers.

When it came down to it, I began to wonder if all the info and options available to me made a difference in the outcome of the battles at all. Definitely play Kessen II to blow up guys with meteor showers; just don't expect to do everything with your new abilities.

In one sense, Kessen II, with its basis in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms saga, takes the series back to Koei's roots. But, with its intuitive interface, pared-down strategy elements, and complex cinematics and storyline, Kessen II is designed to appeal to a more mainstream audience than any of Koei's previous strategy games. Although the game achieves those goals marvelously by bringing you closer to the action, fans of the original game might miss the emphasis on advanced war strategy.

This campaign comes off as unbalanced. It?s a decent battlefield challenge that marches steadily along surrounded by major cinematic fireworks. But the difference between the sheer energy in the cinemas and the painstaking gameplay is so striking that it feels like you?re fighting battles less to win them than to see the next visual treat.
