When very bad things happen to good kids

Can the Baudelaire children outwit Count Olaf and keep him from snatching their inheritance?

Playing this action game based on the holiday movie will result in great misfortune, a phrase that here means "fun."

    Features

    • Play as all three Baudelaire children from the hit books and movie
    • Unlock extras from the movie
    • Collect spare parts to create inventions
    • Discover secret rooms

Because of an unforeseen tragedy, the Baudelaire children's lives are ruined. It's not that their parents have apparently perished in a fire, although that's unfortunate in and of itself. It's that they've been placed in the care of their sinister, eccentric Uncle Olaf. How sinister? He wants to steal the family fortune out from under the children's noses.

Unfortunately for Olaf, the children's noses work perfectly. You will navigate 15 levels of trickery and all-around weirdness to help Violet, Klaus and Sunny foil Olaf's very bad desires.

Most of the action of this adventure-platformer takes place in Olaf's creepy mansion. A rat trap riddled with pests, junk, frightful people and many secret rooms, casa Olaf makes the Addams Family's home look like the Taj Mahal.

The resourceful Baudelaire orphans -- particulary the Thomas Edison-like Violet -- turn all this fly-specked junk into weapons and gadgets. With these inventions, the children can knock the pests and bad guys into next week and expose Olaf as a fraud and a terrible over-actor to boot.

The 3D game features a fully rotating camera to help you maneuver through the mansion with ease. To switch from Violet to Klaus, all you have to do is press the Y Button. The prodigiously brave Sunny Baudelaire likes small places that Klaus and Violet can't squeeze into. This toddler squeezes through mouse holes and can chomp through the thickest metal. Take advantage of each Baudelairean's special skills to solve problems when they come up. And problems will come up, oh yes, they will ...

The way the game controls, the dark environments, and especially the kids-and-creepiness angle give the game a very Harry Potter-like feel. Young Klaus even vaguely resembles young Potter.

The game design works well. You have the whole mansion to explore, as well as outside places. When you run across something that's key to the story, the B Button displays on-screen. Press it to learn what's up.

Finding special packages unlocks features from the Lemony Snicket movie. Although star Jim Carrey isn't featured in the game, the wit from the best-selling books and the movie is generously sprinkled throughout the game. Make sure to check out the paintings of Olaf hanging from the walls. Some are parodies of famous paintings and artists. Mona Olaf, anyone?

    Bottom Line

While some games based on movies fall short, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events has plenty of action, puzzles, secret rooms and hidden items, as well as oodles of Snicket's trademark humor. Only Uncle Olaf couldn't enjoy this game.
