To be fair, it was usually possible to desperately wiggle and jump and wrench (or in a few memorable cases, self-grenade) my way clear of these snags; they were annoying, and they shouldn’t have happened, of course…but none of these quirks have stopped me—or anybody else—from playing Mercs 2 for obsessive hours a time. Occasional hiccups or no, having this much open-world freedom to come at the enemy any old way you see fit is just too much damned fun. Viva la revolución!
As my GTA comparisons come to a close, in no way is Mercenaries 2 a bad game. While in no way does it offer the same amount of replay value, comparable graphics, or variety throughout the map, the fully destructible environments are definitely its biggest saving grace. I had more fun cruising around and leveling pretty much everything in sight than I did completing missions. It's a shame that developers didn't work harder to accentuate what's fun about this game with better graphics, more vehicles, and other gameplay elements. But, for what it is, Mercenaries 2 is a decent title for short-lived amounts of fun.
All in all, don't expect anywhere near the same caliber title from the PS2 version of Mercenaries 2. This is one of the sloppiest ports I've played in a long time, and you're better off saving your money towards a PlayStation 3 if you're looking for a next-gen experience. Mercenaries 2, even on the PS3/X360 is a flawed game, but Pi Studios basically crippled this one with awful gameplay elements, poor controls, and lousy visuals. Avoid at all costs.
Another case of the PS2 being treated like a console that doesn't matter anymore. It happened with sports games almost immediately after Xbox 360 was released. We knew it wouldn't be long before action games were given the same treatment. Consequently, the PS2 version of Mercenaries 2 is barely a fraction of the franchise Pandemic created.
The PS2 version of Mercenaries 2 is very displeasing in terms of graphics when compared to other newer PS2 games and the overall game felt boring besides a few good explosions and some variety in the extra missions. If you are curious about the PS2 version of Mercenaries 2 then be sure to try before you buy. There might be some fun to be had here if you've only got a PS2 but I would highly recommend a rental first, so you know what expect. The PS2 version is basically a watered-down version of the release on the next-gen consoles that is easily forgettable.
The original Mercenaries came out three-and-a-half years ago. But instead of giving us a game with more than three years worth of updates, Pi Studios has actually taken three steps backwards. Mercs 2 looks worse, plays worse and is just plain worse than the groundbreaking original. Why this watered-down version was even published is a mystery. Were this game fun, with the missions structured in a way that made them enjoyable, thaen there'd at least be a reason to rent. But there's nothing here to recommend. Mercenaries 2 on PS2 is a bad game. 'Nuff said.
On pouvait légitiment s'attendre à ce qu'Electronic Arts ne fasse pas une tonne d'efforts sur la version PS2 de Mercenaries 2, mais de là à mettre en rayon un jeu qui répond à tous les critères d'un sous-produit, il y avait un sacré fossé. Comme quoi il ne faut jamais présumer de rien.
So, wenden wir uns zum Ende des Tests dem Bodensatz zu: Der PS2-Fassung. Alles, was ihr bisher gelesen habt, bezog sich ausschließlich auf die 360-, PS3- und PC-Versionen. Die PS2-Variante teilt sich mit ihren Brüdern zwar das Szenario, die Protagonisten, das grundlegende Spielprinzip sowie die tolle Musik, allerdings hören da auch schon die Ähnlichkeiten auf. Alles andere ist sieben Stufen schlechter: Die Grafik ist erschreckend leblos und ruckelt wie die Hölle, das Missionsdesign beschränkt sich auf simple Zerstörung, die Steuerung geht völlig vor die Hunde.
If you're looking for a bargain bin game to add to your collection, I really wouldn't even spend the money for this one. You're better off to find another game, any other game, even a board game, than spending the time on this one.
