NBA Jam is back, baby!! And all it is really missing is online gameplay. And just for the record though, the Xbox version gets extra credit for at the least allowing contect download such as rosters and Jam Store stuff! Otherwise, it's a fantastic throwback to the age of classic arcade gaming, brought into the present, and adding enough cool features to make this game worth having. The Legends Tournament alone is reason to own NBA Jam. Of course, I listed quite a few reasons above. A definate keeper!!

As a stand-alone game, NBA Jam is definitely fun to play, but it lacks the gameplay depth of pretty much every other major basketball title on the market, arcade or otherwise. Regardless, the game is a solid effort all around, and it does a nice job of bringing the license to modern-day consoles. If what you want is the best arcade basketball experience out there, then you'll probably want to look elsewhere, because NBA Jam doesn't offer it. However, if you're looking for a good way to remember the days of arcades past or are just a basketball fan looking to have some over-the-top fun with the sport, then you'll definitely want to check out NBA Jam.

For simple, stylized basketball, this is hardly an awful choice. The problems are numerous, and the developers seemed to have missed the point of updating in many regards. If you like NBA Street, stay with NBA Street. If you've worn your copies down of the games in that series, this cheaper alternative is enough to pass time.

It's too bad really, as online play could have made a big difference. Imagine an experience that allows you play three-on-three with six human players; all of them slamming, pushing, and scrambling for the ball across the telephone lines. Unfortunately, you’ll have to leave that to your imagination.

NBA Jam 2004 shows that the series does still have some life left in it, but major refinements need to be made to keep it going. It still has the same basic flaws as the old game, the primary being that it's lacking depth. Better stat-tracking, more moves, more play modes like a dunk contest or a three-point shootout would all be welcome. It's fun to reminisce about the past with a few friends the first couple of games, but after that, you'll be looking for your copy of NBA Street 2.

Game Chronicles
I was really looking forward to NBA Jam and while Acclaim has managed to make a game that is better than any of the other attempts at a home edition NBA Jam still doesn’t live up to the arcade original and falls short of other arcade hoops like NBA Street and NBA Showtime.

If there's anything redeeming about NBA Jam, it's that it feels just like the game we all loved so many years ago. If there's anything wrong with NBA Jam, it's that it feels just like the game we all loved...so many years ago.

When NBA JAM first appeared 8 years ago or so, I was a huge fan, and tried everything I could to get good enough to get all my players on fire (score three straight baskets) so that I could push around my friends and block all their shots. That was fun, YEARS AGO!!! Now with games such as NBA Street Vol.2 and others of this genre, what was once revolutionary is now just tired and boring. I seriously question why Acclaim waited so long to get this series on to the newer platforms, but because of that delay, they failed to realize that they may need to change the gameplay in order to make it keep up with the times.

For my money (that has been deposited in 25-cent increments in NBA Jam machines all across this fine nation), this game is a worthy successor to the NBA Jam legacy. While it doesn't have enough going for it to take down the fine NBA Street franchise this year, I think this game's breathed new life into a franchise that deserves another look.

I have a hard time seeing the appeal of this game, for casual gamers like myself and my friends we found it to be boring and silly after a while. Perhaps a real Basketball nut would get a lot more out of the game than we did, but I would have thought that a fan of the game would prefer a more tactical and accurate representation of the sport, rather than this three-on-three joke that appears to take places on a trampoline.
