Quake III Revolution's frantic combat is wicked fast and packed with addictive, exciting action that heavily favors quick reflexes and itchy trigger fingers over deep strategies. The eternal load times really drag down the action, though. And Q3R definitely isn't for kids, earning a Mature rating for its sizable servings of blood and gore.

Quake III Revolution doesn't deliver the same b-grade sense of humor and long list of options that TimeSplitters does, and it certainly doesn't have the killer level-building option, but what it does do – which is to bring gamers an incredibly fun four-player PC game to the PS2 – it does remarkably well. Frankly, it seems like it's been too long for this to happen, but Quake III definitely fits the bill for endless hours of four-player deathmatches. Or capture the flag, or possession, or team play. It's all there.

So after mentioning the word Quake III and Unreal Tournament three dozen times in this review, I have come to the conclusion that no party is complete with out both Unreal Tournament and Quake III: Revolution. Quake III looks downright amazing, but Unreal Tournament is just slightly more fun to play. Quake III got an innovative Campaign that is different than the PC and DC version, while Unreal Tournament has the better level design. It goes on forever like this, both Unreal and Quake have their ups and downs, and when tallied up together, we come down to a tie between the two games. So while there is somewhat of a clean winner on the PC turf of FPS titles, the PS2 has yet to find one, but that may change with the release of Red Faction this May 2001. My final verdict: get Quake III, I would definitely slap a "highly recommended" sticker on it, not only is it a good single-player game, but its deathmatch is almost as good as GoldenEye.

Underneath a few problems, however, lies a very solid and playable game that fans have come to worship. Despite the inappropriateness of a few very large maps, the level design is still very well thought out. The weapons and power ups are balanced, various, and add enough depth. Finally, the fighting engine offers plenty of technique to keep fans of the genre pleasantly hooked for a while.

Overall Quake 3 Revolution is 90% impressive and 10% disappointment. The upside - the graphics, the speed, the fun factor. The downside - long load times, no keyboard/mouse use, no online play. Its strengths easily outweighing its weaknesses and thus making Q3R the FPS to beat. Timesplitters may attract those looking for more storyline, but Q3R is the better choice for everything else.

Unlike the Dreamcast version and the PC original, both of which offer online play, the PS2 version of Quake III is suited to a very select group of people. If you can't play either of the online-capable versions of the game, then Quake III Revolution is a very solid game that compares favorably to both TimeSplitters and Unreal Tournament. However, even with the additions and tweaks made to the single-player game, anyone familiar with other versions of the game will find Quake III Revolution to be rather limited.

All Game Guide
Quake III is still an entertaining game for the PS2, and one of the best multiplayer experiences available on the console to date. Yet there are two conditions that must be satisfied if you are planning to purchase this game. First, only pick this game up if you are planning to spend the majority of the time playing it with friends (up to four can play at a time, via the Multitap). Second, only choose this game if you do not have access to a computer with a high-end video card.
