The tutorials are well worth the investment and the gameplay is solid, although it can still be tightened. The engine might be dated in look, but it runs smoothly, and a great deal of effort has gone into the code to model physics of the egg-shaped rugby ball. For those of you familiar with the game, there is a full suite of teams and leagues that represent the most famous and popular clubs and national teams. If you are interested in learning more about this sport, or if you are looking for a new sport to get into because mainstream sports aren't doing it for you anymore, then I highly recommend Rugby 2005. It's fast, it's fun and it's new, but most importantly, it's a good game.
EA Sports Rugby 2005 is a superior game to EA Sports Rugby 2004. The graphics, sound and gameplay are all improved and while still not brilliant the series is at least heading in the right direction. If you're a rugby fan then this is a game you should certainly check out.
Rugby 2005 is in uncomfortable position. The sport isn’t really familiar to Americans, thus playing it requires a bit more effort than the other sport games. The unfamiliarity also doesn’t allow us to accurately judge how close it portrays the sport of rugby. If you’re a fan of the game, based purely on fun, Rugby 2005 isn’t bad, but then again, you probably already own it. Sports fans interested in giving rugby a try won’t be disappointed, either. Renting it before is wise, though.
Rugby 2005 will likely appeal to that minority of gamers already familiar with the sport it portrays. For the rest, the game serves as a decent introduction to rugby that, with a little practice, offers some fun and challenge, though not much in the way of long-term appeal. If you love rugby, you probably already own this one. If this is your first time with a rugby game, you'll likely spend your first few hours wondering just what's going on.
At the end of the day, rugby lovers will love how far this franchise has come since last year's version. Newcomers should consider renting first. The game is hard to master, but once the initial difficulties are overcome, Rugby 2005 is a fun, accurate game that is true to its real-life counterpart.
