While it does have its weaknesses (the levels are a bit generic and there was a bit too much backtracking for my taste), Musashi succeeds with great visual style, excellent humor, and rock-solid gameplay.
Game Chronicles (Mar 28, 2005)
If Kingdom Hearts' battle system hadn't sucked, it might have played a lot like this game. Musashi: Samurai Legend has certainly exonerated itself from its underwhelming predecessor as well, and turned out to be a surprisingly enjoyable jab at the world of Japanese RPG’s in general. It's got some really engaging gameplay, surprising depth for an action/RPG and, if not a huge wealth of things to do, enough fun stuff to seek out and conquer that it's satisfying to finish it all off.
Worth Playing (Mar 08, 2005)
The worst thing about Musashi: Samurai Legend, honestly, is how short it is. For the average gamer, there’s roughly 20 hours of gameplay to be had from it, and highly skilled gamers may find themselves beating the game inside of 15. While this is plenty of time for Samurai Legend to throw a wild variety of challenges at you, and not too terribly short compared to most action games, it still feels a bit unsatisfying. Something with Samurai Legend’s promise and retro appeal doesn’t come along too often, and seeing it developed more fully in a longer game would result in one of the best action RPGs ever. As it is, Musashi: Samurai Legend is a very good game with a few quirks you’ll have to tolerate, and if you like frantic action or its shounen manga aesthetic, you won’t want to miss this game.

To be honest this is not the sort of game that I would normally prefer to play, but I can honestly say that I have enjoyed playing Musashi-Samurai Legend. I find that some games can be overly complicated and you get bogged down by a multitude of potions and concoctions and amulets and weapons that only work on some enemies and not others and in the end it just becomes a case of trial and error and tedious. This game is relatively straight forward an extremely enjoyable to play. In fact I’m fed up with writing about it I’m going now to play it...

Musashi isn't for everyone. So I highly recommend a test drive before a purchase, but those that can look past its quirky story will be rewarded with a title that is a nice blend of Square Enix production values and good old-fashioned fun.
Game Over Online (Apr 08, 2005)
While it's good to see Musashi back on the screen again, it's unfortunate that his title is hampered by a short game experience, practically unused skills and technical glitches. Hopefully it won't take another seven years before this hero returns in another adventure, one that shows the character off in a stronger way.

If you’re looking for a pretty looking action/role playing game with a hint of Zelda meets Suikoden this is the game for you. If that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, you may want to try renting this game first. Musashi: Samurai Legend has some flaws, for sure, but for the most part it’s fun to play and a good way to burn 20-30 hours if that’s what you’re looking for.
GameSpot (Mar 22, 2005)
The game can be finished in 10 to 15 hours of play, and after a single play-through, you'll have seen most everything there is to see. Beating the game unlocks the hard mode, for those who like their action ramped up a bit, but while there are various items and enemy techniques you can collect, unless you're the type of person that must have everything at 100 percent, you likely won't care. Musashi Samurai Legend is stylish but fairly shallow, serving up an experience that represents good, light action fare but is low on challenge. If you're a fan of the manga style and you've got an irresistible need to cut up a bunch of evil robots, a rental would probably do you nicely.
Gamezine (Aug 07, 2005)
MAN!AC (Oct, 2005)
G4 TV: X-Play (Mar 24, 2006)
Samurai Legend Musashi feels like nothing more than another mediocre game out of Square-Enix meant to tide fans over until Final Fantasy XII finally hits. It features some good action and gorgeous graphics, but comes off too disjointed and repetitive to be considered a purchase-worthy title.
GameSpy (Mar 11, 2005)
The flaws may not matter to those with fond memories of the similarly hampered original, or to players who just want a fairly low-impact action title. In that case, Square's little samurai is able to live up to his billing. For those hungry for the true samurai of legend, however, it's best to wait a bit longer, and give Musashi time to really grow up.

IGN (Mar 14, 2005)
Musashi is a collision course of too many genres and not enough time tweaking the game to stand on its own. Everything about the game is just too slow and too repetitive and too awkward to hold your attention. The style is certainly worth checking out for a few minutes, but soon after that you're better off moving on to either an action title or more of a straight-up RPG. If there is any game that comes far from living up to the promise of the intro movie, it's Musashi: Samurai Legend.
UOL Jogos (Mar 22, 2005)
