All arguments aside, the game is still a really great survival horror experience. If you haven't played the PSP version then you should pick up Silent Hill Origins for PS2 if that is your only option. Even if some of the aspects have gone downhill when compared to the PSP version, the game still remains the same from a gameplay perspective and overall story point of view. If you have to choose between both versions then I would easily recommend the PSP version however.

I didn't find Silent Hill Origins quite as scary as some of the previous games, but that may be because the formula has become so familiar. Even so, this dark adventure is definitely a thrill and the price is right.

Origins is a solid entry in a popular horror franchise, but some mechanics (such as the combat and camera) show that the series is in need of a reboot. However, it's hard to beat the psychological sense of the fear that Silent Hill creates, and it's easy to see why the games have a loyal following of fans.

Silent Hill Origins might be the weakest installment in the series, but it’s a testament to the quality of the franchise when the weakest entry is still this good. Origins is definitely worthy of a play-through by series fans and anyone who enjoys being scared.

Game Vortex
Overall, I'd have to say that I was disappointed in Silent Hill Origins. It was way too dark and although you can choose your level of brightness when you begin a game, unless you know how very dark and miserable it's going to be going in, you don't know to max out your brightness and you can't adjust this option later on it the game. If you could, it would have helped somewhat. In short, the story just isn't as compelling as part iterations and I just didn't find it too much fun. For hardcore Silent Hill fans who absolutely need to know how it all began, rent it.

Silent Hill: Origins brought back the profound sensation of fear which made the Silent Hill series one of the top survival horror series in videogaming history. If you’re adult enough to appreciate shivers up your spine and psychological discomfort (as opposed to a childish fondness for splatter and “torture porn”), you can rest (un)easy knowing things are back to where they should be. If you want to indulge some foul urge towards the disgusting and/or the perpetration of extreme violence towards others, go rent a Saw movie, Se7en, House of Wax, Hostel, Cabin Fever, or any other Eli Roth production. Hell, you can even rent a season of Alias or the last James Bond movie – apparently, a certain administration’s disdain for the strictures of the Geneva Convention have spilled down into accepted popular culture. Just never accuse me of suggesting you patronize or perpetuate this repulsive trend in American society.

This is but a minor quibble, especially for a longtime fan of the series like myself, who will consider any new Silent Hill title to be a good thing, warts and all. Is it worth buying? If you're a fan, absolutely. And if you're new to the world of survival horror, Silent Hill Origins might be just the perfect introductory title for you - it's relatively short (I finished the game in about seven hours), it'll go a little easier on you than some other titles and will still surprise you with some unexpected scares

Worth Playing
Fans of survival horror and the Silent Hill series will enjoy Silent Hill: Origins, while others will be turned off by its morbid nature. If you don't have a PSP and didn't get the chance to check out the title a year ago, now's your chance. While the game doesn't do anything amazing to innovate the genre or the series, it's still a decent value for the $30 price tag.

GamingTrend
Adventure fans and fans of past Silent Hill games will find a lot to enjoy with Silent Hill Origins for the PS2. The game's graphics have been improved over the PSP version and the rest of the game is classic Silent Hill. However, those gamers who can’t understand why you need to flush a toilet and traverse inter-dimensional gateways to simply open a door will want to steer clear of this one. If I were Travis I would have gotten back in my truck the minute the clichéd scary girl ran into the fog.

Game Captain

When all is said and done, the Silent Hill: Origins is pretty good. For what I imagine was an attempt to combine the main story arc with themes from all other games while including visual elements from the film, the game should in all rights have ended in disaster. Curiously enough, it doesn't. A well thought out story and subtext shines brightly through the aping of many of the other Silent Hill games’ clichés.

Silent Hill and survival horror fans will like it for the most part. But if you played the original on PSP, there's not really any pressing reason to go through it again.

Telling the origin story of a well established franchise can be an extremely hazardous thing to do, but Silent Hill: 0rigins manages to wrap both the mythology of the movie and games together quite well. With a good storyline, intriguing gameplay elements and excellent production and replay value, 0rigins is definitely worthy of a Silent Hill fan's attention. While the combat and camera system is pretty weak, and the manual control over shifting between dimensions removes the feeling of dread, 0rigins does justice to the series as a whole. However, the port over to the PS2 just feels really basic and uninspired, with weaker textures and controls that could've been improved, but simply weren't. If you're looking to truly do justice to the horror of the game, you probably want to track down the PSP version if you have the chance.

If any franchise has room to grow, this is the one, yet not a single meaningful element of Origins takes the gameplay anywhere the original Silent Hill didn't already go. This comfort blanket of unevolved familiarity might be welcomed by accepting fans, but it might make you wish that the series would grow up a bit.

One can suffer through the bad graphics, useless melee weapons, and drawn out portal-traveling sections to taste some of the richest moments in confronting pain, evil and suffering that you’ll encounter in a game. There’s no doubt that the PSP version is better; the game was made for that system. So if you’ve got the PSP version, leave this puppy alone; it’s redundant and inferior. However, while it’s unattractive and a bit awkward on the PS2, if you don’t own a PSP and you’re a survival horror fan, Silent Hill Origins still comes recommended.
