Soldier of Fortune does little to disguise the fact that it's just one bloody shoot-out after another. Story and puzzle elements are light, but body shots are tallied after each level. Action fans will have little room for complaints, however--Soldier of Fortune promises "action movie" gameplay and delivers. Each firefight is a challenge, and the detailed, though gruesome, enemy model animation enhances the realism.

Fortune is fairly fun for hardcore soldier types, but everyone else will just want to keep their membership in Red Faction

Gamers looking for a First-Person Shooter they could really sink their teeth into will not find anything worthwhile in Soldier of Fortune and fans of the PC version will find this version lacking in all the qualities that made it a favorite in the first place. If it is original and action-packed game play you crave, I suggest you buy “Half-Life” or “Red Faction”--at least these games offer more bang for the buck.

While this is a faithful reproduction of the original Soldier of Fortune, I can't help but feel that it's the same kind of rushed-out crap that gets tossed into the bargain bin at your favorite game store just weeks after its release. It not only shows that you can screw up a port to a console, but also that you can fail to make a PS2 game look beautiful, managing somehow to produce PlayStation 1-level graphics with a next-generation system. While I've wanted more quality first-person shooters, like Red Faction, for the PS2, I could've done without this one -- especially given the horrible treatment of the original.

Despite its problems, Soldier of Fortune on the Playstation 2 is not a horrible port. It offers some decent fragging fun with hordes of baddies and a fair multiplayer mode. There is definitely enough here for a rental, although I would say if you need to own it, search for a preowned copy. The flaws make it hard to recommend as a full $50 purchase.
