Star Trek: Encounters

It all sounds good (and looks great), especially for the budgetware that Encounters is, but the game is crippled by a few rookie mistakes. First up, there’s not much variation between the eras. The NX-01 handles like the NCC-1701 and since the only voice work is subdued narration by William Shatner (not as Captain Kirk), the different personalities don’t come through. The game throws a few curveballs, but they usually miss—like a chance to control DS9 which morphs into a game of Asteroids.

Star Trek: Encounters can be fun but feels strained for a full title. I’d definitely love to see this again with voice acting and big multiplayer matches, because it’s fun to play. It would be even more fun, though, if I had more ships at my disposal earlier, in a campaign that weren’t so linear, or so dull. Still, for twenty bucks, this is a game worth probing.

Eines muss man Bethesda lassen, sie haben es nun schon zum wiederholten Mal geschafft auch nicht nur einen winzigen Funken der Atmosphäre aus den Star Trek Serien in ihren Spielen einzufangen. Lieblose, Uninspirierte und zusammenhangslose Aufträge die ganz ohne Hauptcharaktere und Story auskommen müssen, sowie Schwächen im Missionsdesign und Steuerung machen Star Trek: Encounters zu einem unterdurchschnittlichen Lizenzspiel ohne jegliche Höhepunkte. Wer von Legacy schon enttäuscht war, der braucht die PS2 Umsetzung gar nicht erst anspielen, lediglich die vollständige Flotte aller Enterprise Schiffe, inklusive der neuen E-Klasse, ist eine Kaufgrund - aber auch nur für echte Trekkies die sonst schon alles haben.

Encounters suffers from a dire lack of Star Trek. There's very little point in using the Star Trek license without exploiting its greatest assets. Unfortunately, that's exactly what happens here. Take away the name and there's little here that resembles the long-running franchise at all. And while playing through different eras of the Trek timeline is a great concept, and definitely has its appeal, the actual gameplay doesn't do it justice. It's a bargain title, but even gamers strapped for cash need to know Encounters is Star Trek only in name, not in function.

Es gibt Spiele, da springt der Funke sofort über, andere brauchen ein wenig Zeit, um mich in den Bann zu ziehen - und es gibt Spiele, die schaffen es nicht, irgendeinen Reiz auszuüben. Star Trek: Encounters ist ein Spiel der dritten Kategorie, denn die heillos komplizierte Steuerung und das langweilige Spielprinzip geben eine unterdurchschnittliche Mischung ab, die selbst für eingefleischte Trekkie-Fans schwer zu verdauen sein dürfte.

The stuff that fills the holes between the normally brief – albeit mostly fun – combat takes up way too much time, and feels so banal and lifeless, it manages to overpower the good bits and drag down the whole experience.

Even though Star Trek Encounters is a budget title, it’s a shame such a good idea had to go to waste in a game that actually feels like a budget title.

En effet, sa réalisation est en dessous de la moyenne, sa jouabilité est horrible, ses missions sont sans aucun intérêt et l'univers est totalement sous-exploité. Bref, même les inconditionnels de Star Trek ne doivent pas acquérir ce titre.
