1001 Video Games

Logan's Shadow appears in the book 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die by General Editor Tony Mott.

al-Jamil

Regarding the fictional Middle Eastern terrorist group al-Jamil -- which the protagonist character Gabriel Logan spends much of his time fighting throughout the story , and which is led by the character called Ghassan al-Bitar -- "al-Jamil" means "sunrise," or "the sunrise" in Arabic. The term is probably a metaphor for victory, vindication, or the establishment of whatever geopolitical conditions the group wants to create. It is a matter of opinion whether the al-Jamil foot soldiers are tragically misguided people, or mere vermin to be exterminated. From time to time, written material appears on the screen to introduce new game segments, as if the writing is from logs kept by Gabriel Logan. At one point, Logan writes that he almost feels sorry for the followers of al-Jamil -- because he helped to arm organizations like theirs, manipulating them to fight the Soviets following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
