The three species set-up feels generous even at a time when people demand so much of their games, but it's a premise that dates back to Rebellion's first Aliens vs. Predator in 1994. While much has changed it still feels a little rusty – this isn't as slick as a Modern Warfare or Halo and its production values feel like they're from a different age, with poor textures and the occasional unimaginative set-piece belying the fact that underneath the HD dazzle is a core idea that's changed little in over 15 years. But that never truly detracts from how much fun is to be had throughout Aliens vs. Predator's myriad modes as Rebellion leans heavily on the source material, creating a game that's going to stoke the hearts of anyone who ever fell in love with the original films – which is likely anyone who's ever picked up a game pad.
In conclusion, Aliens vs. Predator may not offer anything new in terms of gameplay and features a relatively short campaign mode, however it’s actually good old fashioned fun and if you’re a fan of either of these two franchises, than you’ll definitely be alien heaven. Even though I'm not a huge fan of online play, the developers have hit the nail on the head with this game and I'll definitely be going online for more.
Overall, though, Aliens vs. Predator is a dream game for fans of the source material and, despite lacking a slick coat of whiz-bang graphical polish, ranks as one of the most unique and absorbing first-person titles for the PS3. Each of three, well-crafted single player campaigns offers a distinct gameplay experience, and the online portion of the game (barring the aggravating matchmaking system) is fully-featured, extremely balanced, and a whole lot of fun. Whether you’re leaping from rooftop to rooftop, stalking a platoon of marines as the predator, or scampering through a ventilation shaft on the way to propagating your species as the alien, Rebellion’s sci-fi, survival-horror/action title is an unequivocal gem of a FPS, and a worthy addition to nearly anyone’s budding game library.
In the end, Aliens vs. Predator is a solid game with its fair share of problems. For fans of the franchise, you’ll be able to look over the blemishes and find a game that you’ll be playing for months. For those that aren’t into the Aliens vs. Predator franchise, well, what the hell is wrong with you? Good or bad, I think we can all agree on one thing: This is the greatest game ever made where you can pull a guy’s spine out while he screams for mercy.
While there is a lot to like in Aliens vs. Predators, it's far from a great game. There's usually something to complain about at every turn, and every great element is flawed in some small way. Despite these faults, mistakes, and missteps, it's still an utterly enjoyable and unique experience, making the game more than the sum of its parts. Like the Xenomprohs, the problems are there at all times, ready to leap out from the shadows and strike. However, unlike the Xenomorphs, they don't get in the way, and while that alone doesn't forgive the problems, it definitely makes them less detrimental.
You won't be buying AvP for its single-player though, and if you are you may find yourself sorely disappointed. Rebellion has built AvP around its multiplayer, which is both well-constructed and surprisingly well-balanced. Each species comes with its own unique advantages and shortcomings, and will take some time to master, but once you do, AvP rewards in spades. Fans of the movies will certainly find more to love in AvP than those without a knowledge of its celluloid counterparts, who might find the whole thing a little less palatable in comparison to the many superior FPSes currently available.
Aliens vs. Predator is a decent game plagued by a horde of “what ifs.” There are so many places that just scream out for more attention; I couldn’t play for more than 15 minutes without going, “oh come on; that could’ve been awesome!” There’s just always something that reared its ugly head and it’s absolutely unavoidable. I suppose it’s a credit to the designers and the solid atmosphere that we can still somehow manage to have fun regardless of the flaws, but that doesn’t a worthwhile $60 game make.
It's good to see the franchise back and I like that Rebellion is at the helm. Overall, the multiplayer takes center stage here and what's left is a mediocre campaign at best. My recommendation is a weekend rental -- get through the campaign in a sitting or two and then spend several hours with multiplayer to see if this one is worth your gaming dollar.
The control gripes aside, Aliens vs Predator is a good game, but it will certainly appeal more to fans of the two franchises. It shouldn't be compared to other First Person Shooters, because this is only a part of the game, and the different combat styles of the three species make it both challenging and entertaining. The single-player campaign may not offer much in the way of replay value, but the decent multiplayer modes go some way to rectify this, and Gamestyle defies any fan of the films not to enjoy their time spent mutilating Marines or hunting bugs.
Aliens vs. Predator could have been a truly great game. It’s there, you can almost feel it, but it’s constantly ripped away from you because of some poor design decisions and a general lack of quality that keeps the game from having that triple-A feeling. It’s by no means a bad game and will almost certainly please fans more so than either movie effort, but when compared to other first-person shooter titles on the market, the difference is clear.
Aliens Vs Predator is a great deal of fun, but there's no getting away from the fact that it feels somewhat dated and that the marine campaign is head and shoulders above the other two. A more fleshed out marine campaign and more maps for the survival multiplayer game type would have made for an altogether better experience, but what Rebellion has delivered is still worth taking a look at. This isn't the perfect Aliens or Predator video game, but it does a lot right.
As an overall package, you are getting a lot when it comes to AvP. With three campaigns, a co-op mode, and five other multiplayer modes, there is lot for you to see and do. However, the problem is that every aspect has its flaws. There are times where you are going to just want to put the controller down and say: "I can find a better game somewhere else". However if you stick with it, you will find something to like underneith it all, and will definetly have some fun with Aliens Versus Predator.
Game Over Online
What might sound like a rather harsh review is actually just my way of saying this game could've been better. AvP has some great moments, good action, and some very neat ideas, but they're all held back by a ton of balancing issues and dull gameplay. The sound effects are fantastic and will definitely leave you in the mood to watch either the Aliens or Predator films (though I suggest skipping the AvP films). Despite the much talked about three unique campaigns, this is a game that puts its multiplayer in the spotlight, but there's very little innovation and even less of a reason to choose this game over the myriad of better online experiences out there.
Middle East Gamers (MEgamers)
All in all, though this may be a fleeting return to AvP’s better days, it doesn’t really do much to revive the now stale series. Pitting the gruesome Aliens against the brutal Predators may have once been on par with dream match-ups like “Batman vs Superman” or “Tyson vs Muhammad Ali” but is now more along the lines of “Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games”. Still the game is not bad and worthy of a try but just don’t expect to be blown away and frankly I wouldn’t mind if this is the last we hear of either species. Perhaps it’s best to let bygones be bygones.
Alien vs. Predator is not the greatest of games, but it is not all bad. On one hand, playing as both the Alien and Predator are rather enjoyable at times. You really feel like you are immersed in the species’ universe and their traits and mannerisms are greatly featured. However, it still carries the same question that I had when I saw the movie: “Why are humans even involved?” The FPS mechanics of the game make it feel like little time was put into them and there are much better games out there that are devoted solely to that. Also with the poor visuals and a multiplayer system that isn’t all that interesting, you’ll probably put the game down once you finish all the campaign stories.
Rather appropriately, your natural instincts will almost certainly tell you whether Aliens vs. Predator is the right purchase for you. If you’re a huge fan of anything AvP then it’s sure to be a definite “Yes”, as the game pays the kind of homage to the franchise you might expect it would. If, on the other hand, you’re a devotee of one or more of its’ many components – Aliens, Predators, sci-fi or first-person-shooters – then you’ll need to give the decision much more serious consideration. There certainly are things to enjoy about AvP, but its lack of imagination beyond its solid recreation of the Ali vs. Tyson of sci-fi fantasy fights means that it’s a title that’s more generically enhanced than genetically advanced; and because of this it will probably remain a tantalizing blip on many people’s radars that they don’t investigate further.
I begged Aliens vs. Predator to be better but it wouldn’t happen. It had an opportunity to be an outstanding title but so many flaws with the characters and gameplay are present that even an ardent fan of both species. like I am, can’t ignore. The whole thing felt underpowered and half-hearted. Mediocre graphics, dreadful combat and an insane waste of assets and ideas leads me to believe that Rebellion must have thought that the species-popularity alone would carry the game. Devotees of both Aliens and Predators may want to check out the multiplayer but save yourself the letdown and don’t get too excited about anything else.
Cheat Code Central
There's nothing unforgettable about this game, but there's nothing worth hating really. This is a mediocre effort in every sense of the word. I almost wish Rebellion had failed more spectacularly; at least there'd be something more to talk about. As it stands, AVP is a FPS that follows most of the conventions of the genre and adds some Aliens, Marines, and Predators to the mix. No matter what your purpose in playing Rebellion's new shooter, there is almost undoubtedly a reason you should be playing a different game. It's not bad, it's just not good.
Sega and Rebellion don’t offer much of a unique experience to attract gamers who have been up to their eyeballs in video games since the holidays.
Aliens Vs Predator tries to stay faithful to the franchise but in turn creates a mediocre FPS that is over far too quickly. The multiplayer does add some excitement but rage quitters and bad losers will spoil your games until it is fixed. Movie fans will get a little buzz from playing their favourite monsters but the whole experience is dull overall.
It's the little things that really drag the game down. Aliens vs. Predator seems to be a well-meaning attempt at reinvigorating a languishing series, but grotesque kills and some entertaining multiplayer moments don't cut it--not when so many slick and exciting shooters are on store shelves, vying for your time. The attention to detail, the well-considered level design, and the sense of momentum that characterize the finest shooters are missing here. Aliens vs. Predator is sometimes enjoyable but never escapes an overwhelming sense of carelessness, so while it may remind you of the good old days, it fails to recapture them.
There's plenty of fun to be had in the multiplayer scenarios including the Horde/Firefight style Survivor mode (which was also in the 1999 original), but only through gritted teeth. It's absurd that a tie-in to a 24 year old film should be so rushed, but they should've waited till it was 25 years.
Sadly a few entertaining multiplayer modes don’t quite save Aliens vs. Predator from mediocrity. Based on the license, and the previous videogaming pedigree, this can only be seen as a disappointment. The few sequences throughout that truly capture what is so unique about this IP are the high points, but there are too few of them and they are buried deep in an otherwise uninspired first-person shooter.
The last time I played a game in this series was when it came out for the Jaguar. Sadly, it seems not much has changed in the last decade and a half. For something that seems like such a no-brainer, folks do sure seem to screw this one up a lot. As it stands now, you'd probably have more fun being on To Catch a Predator than playing Aliens Vs. Predator.
I didn’t like this game more, because there’s not much more here to like. In fact this game sort of sat on my Steam list forgotten for a month or two after we got it. The lackluster opening on it’s own was almost enough to make me shrug indifferently and play something else, but eventually I came back to the game, and wiped it out. And then still, another month went by before I remembered I needed to write about it. I know this is a punishing review but, I really can’t sugar coat anything that’s on display here. Everything that this game offered me was inconsistent, and forgettable.
The survivor mode is like the game itself in a microcosm. It's rote and uninspired, a desultory thoughtless collage of bits and pieces surgically removed from the movies and dropped lifelessly into a dated engine. We're light years from the calculated, monster mash-up the series used to promise. If there was ever a game deserving of the last movie's title -- Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem -- it's this one.
