DescriptionCounterSpy is a 2.5D side-scrolling game with stealth elements and randomly generated levels. The game is set during the Cold War and is based on the spy mythology and aesthetics of that time, the 1950's and 1960's. Between the American and Soviet activities, a third spy agency, C.O.U.N.T.E.R., is active. Its goal is to maintain world peace by keeping the two superpowers at bay, sabotaging their efforts when the plans become too damaging for the world.
Movement is done on a 2D plane, while in certain sections the 3D space becomes available for the character to aim the weapon. The main goal is to collect enemy plans. These further the story, but are also used to shut down the base's weapon at the end of a level. Taking out enemies in quick succession is rewarded with a score multiplier. Additionally intelligence can be gathered, which is the game's currency. Certain plans unlock formulas and new weapons.
To win a level the player also needs to keep an eye on the DEFCON status of both sides in the conflict. Whenever the character is caught by a security camera or a guard becomes suspicious and radios in the activity, the level is raised. The same happens when the character is killed. The status can be lowered by using certain formulas ot by forcing white-uniforced officers to surrender without killing them. If the DEFCON status is 'DEFCON 1', only a limited amount of time is provided to quickly finish the level and shut down the weapon before it is launched.
