You can attack with both, your shield and your weapon.

Fallen comrades and enemies may leave useful items and weapons, so don't forget to search their remains whenever you see a glowing orb.
By utilizing archstones you can travel between different areas.
Sometimes defense is the best offense.
With each successful strike you will see how much of health is the enemy left with.
Tougher enemies will block your attacks so you'll have to be resourceful.

Taking on a single enemy may be easy, but that's rarely the case except in early levels.

Death is not the end, just a bit of a drawback forcing you to restart.
You can talk to other characters in the Nexus.

From Nexus you can travel to other worlds you've unlocked or visited.
Replaying finished levels will re-spawn all the enemies whenever you re-visit the area.

Phalanxes are extremely hard to kill from their shielded side.
Watch out for dragon fire, it will take out a huge portion of your HP.
