As Obi-Wan Kenobi once told me, "Many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view." Good advice when thinking your way through Echochrome's frequently mind stumping, addictive I-think-my-IQ-just-went-up-10-points, levels.

Gaming Age
Echochrome had the unfortunate fate of being released during Grand Theft Auto IV week for no good reason. Ironically, while being thoroughly consumed in the world of Rockstar's latest creation, I have found Echochrome to be the perfect change of pace from GTA4 - I mean, they don't get much more different than these two. Regardless, the game is incredibly distinct and interesting, priced right at $9.99, and is absolutely worthy of much more attention. Make sure to check it out.

echochrome is one of those puzzle titles that doesn't come along very often, but immediately strikes a chord for its unique gameplay and incredible depth. While its optical illusions and its challenge to a player's perception of the world will potentially scare off some players, the flexibility of each level and the simplicity of its presentation is incredibly effective, and should appeal to anyone looking for a challenge. At $9.99, echochrome is a great value for PS3 owners, and shouldn't be passed up.

Gaming Target
Echochrome isn’t just for smart people who adore the classical violin music that plays in the background, but it is for people who enjoy brainteasers and puzzle games. Players who aren’t as intellectually interested in those types of games or just don’t have the time may feel like they just spent ten bucks on a colorless, boring game. But, if you can see yourself coming back to this game in the future to attempt other people’s new levels and share your own, then spending the $9.99 is a no brainier.

Gamer 2.0
Overall, echochrome is one of the most unique puzzle games to come out in a while. For the $10 the game costs, you’ll get a lot of enjoyment as the game you’ll pick up to play for ten minutes or so when you want to play a game to relax and flex your brain a bit. If you have to choose between the PSP or PS3 version of the game, the PS3 version clearly wins out for the frequent updates of additional levels, the leaderboards, and ability to send and receive user-made levels from friends over the internet. The PSP version has the edge in the pick-up-and-play factor and maybe slightly better controls, though you’re very limited in available puzzles with the lack of puzzle-sharing over the internet.

Frictionless Insight
I personally found that after an initial extended burst of play, Echochrome is a game that I can come back to for a few levels at a time. While not something that can hold my attention for extended play sessions, the crisp visuals, remarkable minimalist soundtrack and fascinating puzzles make this an excellent game to revisit regularly for challenging fun.

The Next Level
There's a lot to like in this simple and bizarre little game, with the potential for limitless content and a good variety of mazes already available. Echochrome is a very clever puzzle game that messes with your perceptions while teasing your brain, and if Sony can just iron out some of the quirks in the execution it'll be pure excellence. At present though, Echochrome's inconsistencies are just obvious enough that they can't be ignored, but the overall package is so creative and addicting that it's impossible not to recommend.

Games like Echochrome only come around in a great while, completely devoid of anything controversial, yet full of gameplay and challenge that other games wish they had.

Echochrome is a unique experience that's easy to recommend. The PS3 game is superior by virtue of its additional online features and sharper visuals, but no matter which version you choose, you won't be disappointed.

Despite having a short list of problems, echochrome is a solid and unique puzzle game that should be tried by every PS3 owner. A free demo is available for download via the PlayStation store, so if you’re entranced by its art style or intrigued by its gameplay you should definitely give it a shot. At a modest price point of 10 bucks, it’s hard not to recommend to just about anyone who enjoys a good brain teaser.

It might seem like this review is a long list of complaints, and it is, especially regarding the time limit. But they're an assortment of small annoyances in what's otherwise a splendid puzzle game with a minimalist approach. And the ability to create and share your own mind-bending scenes encourages some homegrown M.C. Escherism. Echochrome is probably more for the Math Club than the Pokémon Puzzle League, and it will likely make you feel pretty dumb more than once. But when you do decipher these impossible objects -- getting your mannequin to fall upward, jump forward to go back, and walk over air -- it lets you feel pretty smart, too.

There are also times, albeit few, when the artwork by Dutch artist MC Escher that inspired echochrome in the first place shines through. As the perspective shifts across a particular axis, up becomes down, and your brain spasms slightly as it struggles to process the seemingly contradictory information. I'll remember playing echochrome most for when it did that. Otherwise, at USD 9.99 in the States, it does enough to warrant the score below, but don't be surprised if it doesn't mesmerise you as much as the videos did when you first saw them.
