With all of its improvements FIFA Soccer 09 is by far the most impressive upgrade to any sports title this year. If you are even remotely a fan of the sport FIFA 09 is a must-buy. The improved presentation, AI and addition of Be A Pro mode and Live Season guarantee you will be playing for months to come. Combine it with the incredible online features and you possibly have the most complete sports package available on the market.

TotalVideoGames (TVG) (Oct 01, 2008)
Vast improvements to the action on the pitch and the game in general means that FIFA 09 is certainly PES' equal this year, and we'd be inclined to suggest it makes significant strides beyond Konami's effort in many ways. Time will tell whether it has the staying power of PES, but there can be little doubt that FIFA is a definite contender for the No.1 slot this time.
TheSixthAxis (Oct 03, 2008)
So, with the official license, stunning graphics, a whole host of online options, 7 player local matches and a lengthy single player campaign this is the ultimate football game. Sure, it’s all zeroes and ones but they’re dressed up in a realistic simulation that has finally shed it’s Megadrive roots. The argument is over: FIFA is the new king, and unless Pro Evo comes with a free copy of Metal Gear Solid 4, this one’s in the bag, EA. Brilliant, brilliant stuff.
NZGamer (Oct 06, 2008)
FIFA ’09 pushes the boundaries once more and it will hopefully give Konami something to think about. Graphically this game is superb and although there are some still slight glitches, offers the most comprehensive and realistic football games on the market. Some people might complain about the offside decisions being too precise (it appears that the linesman can spot an offside within an inch). Perhaps the game could be designed with some human error in mind, but then there would be greater complaints with decisions against you when you see you are not offside in the replay. Overall this is a beautiful game… for the beautiful game.

FIFA 09 is a huge amount of game for your dollar, and any soccer fan will be exceedingly happy with it. It's not without its small bugs and annoyances, such as moments where the game appears to hang briefly on loading, but always seems to catch itself again, although these are few and far between. The progress made with this title is simply outstanding. Combined with a excellent menu system, a fantastic soundtrack as we have come to expect from EA, and gorgeous smooth graphics with no sign of slowdown, EA has exceeded expectations and made one of the most addictive and fun soccer titles to date that you really will have trouble putting down.

We had worried that FIFA 09 was going to end up like EURO 08 with a Premiership skin. Luckily for us, we were wrong. Like we said, the best FIFA game ever made. Over to you Konami.

GameSpy (Oct 14, 2008)
FIFA 09 is jam-packed with new content, from clan-based player support to real-world stat updates. Although it feels more like an incremental update than a revolutionary overhaul, EA doesn't need to reinvent the wheel so much as smooth out its edges. Be a Pro has finally been mostly realized, through both an expansive season mode and 10-on-10 multiplayer matches. Custom tactics are a cool new approach to gameplay that let you adapt your club around your style. Gameplay and camera angles have been refined from last year's title, and for once, all of the hyperbole about more animations adds up to something you can tangibly see within your first few matches. FIFA 09 is again the champ, for another year in a row. If it keeps performing like this, will EA add a star above the logo?
Gamervision (Oct 27, 2008)
If last year’s FIFA title started closing the gap between EA’s franchise and Konami’s, then FIFA 09 is right on Pro Evolution’s tail. The gameplay is tighter, the franchise is deeper, and the online and Be a Pro modes more than match anything Pro Evo puts on the table. FIFA 09 is yet another worthwhile 2009 effort from EA, and while the publisher has been a sales juggernaut for years, it’s possible EA might finally be a critical juggernaut as well.
Thunderbolt Games (Oct 16, 2008)
FIFA has definitely caught up in the title race, and I would imagine many Pro Evolution Soccer players are converting over to EA’s franchise. It’s going to be interesting to see who winds up the winner of this hardly contested match-up.
AceGamez (Sep 26, 2008)
It would be remiss when talking of FIFA not to refer to it in regard to its main rival, Pro Evolution Soccer – and while, at the time of writing, this year’s PES remains an unknown quantity, developers Konami are going to have to bring the house if their game is going to be a contender, because FIFA 09 comes as close as anything before it, and possibly closest, to balancing realism with enjoyment. Just like Chelsea circa 2005, all that huge investment is really paying dividends and FIFA’s stock just continues to rise.
Cynamite (Oct 02, 2008)
DarkZero (Dec 06, 2008)
Ultimately, FIFA have improved on their previous effort, perhaps knowing fully that the ball is in Konami’s court to improve this year. If Pro Evo was still at its best, then FIFA 09 would be a genuine alternative. As it is right now, FIFA is the new home of the hardcore football gamer. The changes are just enough to warrant a slightly higher score from last year, but based on this form, it’d be a shame to see FIFA rest on its laurels again, especially if Konami come out all guns blazing for the second half. The match isn’t over by a long shot, but EA are currently in the lead and cruising to the final whistle.
PSX Extreme (Oct 25, 2008)
While you may not notice any dramatic changes immediately, the more you play FIFA 09 the more you notice that it is definitely a step up from last year's game. The mechanics of the game have been fine tuned and better balanced, allowing for a more intuitive experience. The physics have been touched up, again, to increase the game's realism, which greatly diminished the frustration found in FIFA 08. Thanks to the fixed passing mechanics, collision physics, 20 player online, enhanced Be A Pro features, and the fantastic commentary, FIFA continues to be the football game you'll want in your library. Brilliant effort, EA Canada.
IGN UK (Sep 26, 2008)
FIFA 09 returns to the pitch full of swagger, and it does it’s very best to deliver on EA Sport’s promise of creating the definitive football title. An exacting game on the pitch and an overwhelmingly comprehensive one off of it, it’s still got a number of minor niggles that blight the play. But when the package is so vast and offers so much, it’s hard not to be impressed. Is it better than PES? It’s certainly different, and which game you go for this season ultimately depends on what you want from your annual dose of football.
As is usually the case, FIFA 09 is yet another sterling entry in their line of footie titles. Tweaks to gameplay and the silky smooth HD visuals do make for the most convincing offering yet. Nevertheless, the old mantra still applies: There aren’t enough new features to make this game substantially different from last year’s effort. If one were to apply transitive logic, it would mean this year’s title is essentially the same as that from two years ago. Thankfully, transitive logic doesn’t exactly hold, as the cumulative effect of the minor gameplay tweaks does result in a more refined experience. If you haven’t played FIFA in a while, now’s the time to jump back in; this is a great game of soccer. But, if you’re an old hat to the series, the most compelling reason to purchase FIFA 09 may only be the roster update.
Worth Playing (Nov 20, 2008)
Without a doubt, FIFA '09 is the most fun soccer title I've ever played. There are tons of options for how to play the game, from the ridiculous number of teams to a large amount of modes that really deliver. The only rough spots come from occasional buggy animations and physics, and the biggest new addition ? the solo Be a Pro mode ? is just not that compelling to play. FIFA '09 is a wonderful game that any soccer fan should pick up, and the series has finally overtaken Winning Eleven as the best soccer game on the market.
GameTrailers (Nov 14, 2008)
FIFA 09 may or may not have 250 new additions, but it's a strong-playing game with an extensive amount of modes. Factor in the hitch-free online experience and you have a disc that won't easily find its way back to its case. There is certainly room for improvement in a few areas, but FIFA 09 is easily the best soccer game for 2008. Even if you have a casual interest in the sport, you'll become addicted with improving your skills and the gameplay supplies enough latitude to do it.
IGN (Oct 14, 2008)
FIFA Soccer 09 is the tightest playing football on the market and has definitely raised the bar for what Pro Evolution Soccer will need to accomplish to retake the crown this year. While the Be A Pro mode is lacking in my opinion, soccer diehards are going to love the authenticity. The real star of the show is the on-the- field action. Animations look great, players behave properly and the AI has been tuned since last year’s effort. While not perfect, FIFA 09 should be a permanent fixture in anyone sports library.

Playstation Universe (Oct 22, 2008)
Like NHL 09, FIFA 09 may be the most accomplished title in its respective sports category to date. With improved animations, solid AI (for the most part), decent Be A Pro mode and a great online experience, it’s going to be very hard for Pro Evolution Soccer to regain its footing as king of the hill.
GameFocus (Oct 26, 2008)
It may seem like I did not enjoy FIFA, but that can’t be farther from the truth. EA Sports has finally gotten into gear with FIFA 09 after some very questionable releases over the past three years. The sound and graphics are among the best available in any sports game and the overall game-play has improved leaps and bounds from the past HD releases. There still is room for improvement and I am confident that the future editions of Be a Pro will be better tuned and more rewarding. If you’re not too keen on creating a player and fighting for a spot with the big boys, you’ll still have plenty of fun with everything else available.
GameSpot (Oct 08, 2009)
With FIFA 09, EA Sports has created the deepest, most realistic and feature-packed football game yet. The gameplay hasn't changed a lot since UEFA Euro 2008, but the tweaks and refinements have produced an incredibly rewarding game. There's an almost bewildering number of modes to play through, and the amount of online functionality means that the game should have a good deal of longevity. There's still room for improvement, considering the high amount of lag in certain online matches and some AI blunders in single-player, but if you're a football fan looking for something to last you the entire season, you can't go wrong with FIFA 09.
Game Over Online (Jan 05, 2009)
FIFA Soccer 09 looks the best it ever has, the controls make it user friendly, and the improvements to player movement and animations make it the most realistic soccer game on the market. With the new additions of “Be a Pro” mode and the real time updates sent to your console, its as much fun for the average fan as it is for the hardcore fanatic. FIFA 09 is a great pick up for everyone.

This game has some great moments as well as some that are not so great. It is still, though, a first-rate soccer game that dazzles at times. The new features really give the game a boost, but there is still work to do. This is a great game and fun to play with others.
Game Shark (Nov 10, 2008)
Overall, FIFA Soccer 09 is a very enjoyable soccer experience. For the first time in a FIFA game I’ve encountered quite a bit of joy when scoring a goal – as it seems to be a difficult proposition this time around (no more sprinting to the corner, crossing and heading it in on every play). The game easily beats Pro Evolution Soccer 08 as my current game of choice; it will be interesting to see what Konami does to keep up with their new release. In the meantime, you can’t go wrong if you’re a soccer fan and you purchase FIFA Soccer 09.
80 (UK) (Oct 03, 2008)
On the whole though, the depth of choice on and off the pitch makes up for these things. FIFA 09 feels like a proper football game. It used to pretend to be football, dressed up in face masks and gluey boots, but these days football is exactly what it's computing. And the face masks are prettier too. Likenesses do vary in quality (Crouch looks like a tanned smurf, for one), but the animation is phenomenal, and there's so much subtle variation in the visual language EA's defined that we could swear they've even replicated stuff like Kuyt's shambling gait. But then perhaps we're just imagining it, or expecting it, because the game's otherwise very convincing. It feels like football, it rewards football, and it punishes football, for football reasons. It may not always be your brand of football, and you can ask for more, but only by degrees. The myth is dead. "Let's FIFA".
