The LEGO games are all-ages' fare, but they're not dumbed down. There's a lot of gameplay - and while it won't likely stump you to often, it's not a pushover either. And the cutscenes are humorous.

It's easy to recommend this game if you're a) a fan of the series, b) a fan of Lego titles, c) have children, or some combination of all those things. Traveller's Tales has gotten pretty darn good at this sort of thing, and while I was expecting it to feel stale this time round, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this is one of the best in the series. I can't decide if it beats Lego Star Wars — that just worked well on many levels — but it's most certainly better than both Indiana Jones and Batman. So, hats off to the developers for keeping things fresh — now go buy this game and lose yourself among all the butchered latin phrases that make up spell names in this insanely popular world.

LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 is a love letter to fans of the Boy Who Lived. The comedic cutscenes toying with canon, the hundreds of hidden things to find, and the general sense of a great LEGO game paired with a great series really makes this game a standout. There are still a few issues to buff out, but there’s plenty in LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 to keep you coming back for more.

We're not remotely disappointed though. The LEGO franchise was perfectly fine how it was and LEGO Harry Potter offers an explosion of color and all the addictiveness of collecting studs set against the appealing backdrop of the Potter universe, complete with some fine set-pieces and magical moments. Is it the best LEGO game so far? Well, that's really going to depend on whether you like Harry Potter or not and just how big a fan you are. We're fans of Star Wars, Batman, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter and if we had to vote right now for our favorite LEGO game/movie-tie in...Harry Potter wins!

So, I hope you can understand now why slapping a grade on this hasn't been easy. I've gone and settled for "B+" because it's a "good" game whose flaws keep it from being "excellent." (Though, it is excellent Harry Potter fanservice.) But regardless of which side you stand on in the "are grades worthwhile" debate, this is really a case where the letter I've chosen is inconsequential. And while I can understand if what I've mentioned here has put you off, Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 has been my very favorite of the Lego bunch yet.

There isn't a LEGO game that I've played that disappointed me. Warner Brothers Interactive Entertainment puts together another hit through playful comedy and solid gameplay. While it is certainly geared towards a younger audience, there's plenty of adventure here to be had by all ages.

LHP seems to indicate that the franchise has got its Mojo back, but whether it keeps it or not is another matter. Still, for the time being, Potter’s superiority should ensure that old fans will be cheered up and new devotees welcomed into the fold. There is not much here that can be called fresh and inventive but enough minor adjustments have been made to the formula to revive the waning gameplay and provide a decent story and a welcoming return for the classic Lego game.

LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4 may feature LEGO graphics, but the magic is still there from the Harry Potter series. The visuals and sounds of the game make you feel as if you are actually experiencing Hogwarts, granted from a LEGO perspective, but that perspective is an immersive and a fun title regardless of what age you are. The sheer amount of content available in the game, along with the co-op experience, will keep players coming back for the best Harry Potter title on consoles to date.

Everything is a challenge, everything does something, and there's never a moment when you can't interact with the world around you in some way. Objects will come crashing down as you freeze and shatter troublesome Doxies, opening up yet more tasks for you to complete. Jumping on a sofa might spit out a student stuck inside it, or perhaps reveal a character stud, unlocking another of the 160 playable students, teachers, Death Eaters and much more. Not only has Harry Potter and Hogwarts School been perfectly captured and recreated in Lego form, but four entire novels of adventure are contained within its walls. It's been boiled down to a potent, magical concentrate - one that will entrance children and adults alike. Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 proudly lifts the trophy as the best in the Lego series... until you smash it for more precious studs, that is.

Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 is a witty, endearing, wholesome and irreverent adaption of the films, but you don't have to be an avid fan of the series to enjoy Traveller's Tales romp through Hogwarts. Great family entertainment.

LEGO Harry Potter is a solid entry into a fairly overdone franchise. Anyone who has lost interest in the games will not find a lot to pull them back in, unless you just simply love Harry Potter. You can't really fault a game for sticking to what makes it such a huge success, although it is disappointing to see it take steps backwards in areas like online play. Still if you love collecting studs and have yet to grow tired of spending hours trying to get 100% in the LEGO universe Harry Potter is by far the best entry in the series to date.

LEGO: Harry Potter Years 1-4 is certainly the best of the post-Star Wars LEGO games. The story material is handled wonderfully (though if you've never read the books or watched the movies, prepare to be lost), and the gameplay is a great mix of familiar devices and new elements. Although the inevitable follow-up to this title may take a darker turn, I look forward to experiencing it all the same.

But for good or ill, that’s not to say the game isn’t any fun for the rest of us. By the simple virtue of being a more cleverly designed game than those from recent history combined with the clear love and appreciation for the source material, Lego Harry Potter firmly stands out as the most accomplished title in the Lego series yet.

Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 is easily the best Harry Potter game to date, though if that sounds like a backhanded compliment, consider this: It's one of the finest Lego adventures to date as well, which is no faint praise. By minimizing the repetitive combat and inconsistent platforming, Traveller's Tales has also minimized the frustrations, making this excursion to Hogwarts enjoyable for the whole family. Minor flaws, old and new alike, keep Lego Harry Potter from becoming a family-friendly classic, but it's charming and funny, and most importantly, it's fun. And that kind of magic is all too uncommon, even in Harry's world.

But Lego Harry Potter does succeed in being perhaps the best videogame outing for either franchise thus far. While that might not be a particularly meaningful accolade, the game’s playful, fun-focused nature make it hard to criticise to any great degree. If you’re not a fan of either franchise, then Lego Harry Potter probably won’t convert you; but the game’s target audience is, as always, children. Provided the bugs don’t ruin the fun, kids will no doubt love the accessible and faithful treatment given to these two franchises. But Traveller’s Tales still has four films of untapped content to cover, and with years 1-4 providing more than enough of Harry Potter in his Lego form, we are left wondering what else there is to possibly do with the franchise.

It all results in a more complex game than normal for the series and can make the already abstract puzzle logic seem positively random. Everything does usually make some sort of sense at the end though and at least the game hasn't been dumbed down. Even with these changes the game is still the same underneath, but it's still just as hard to dislike despite the lack of underlying change.

Even though going to a school like Hogwarts is out of the question realistically, I can at the very least wrap myself up with LEGO Harry Potter and imagine my school to be one hell of a kick-ass playground. But I’ll imagine playing in it without the A.I. and targeting system, thank you very much. Reviewus Endium.
