I will confess now that I was pleasantly surprised at how incredible this game is and I really struggle to find any noteworthy flaw to criticize it for. My best advice? Buy it. Mass Effect 2 is truly one of gaming’s greatest, and you don’t want to be the one person who missed out on the experience.
Mass Effect 2 was an incredible game on the Xbox 360 and is just as incredible a year later on the PlayStation 3. BioWare has done a fine job porting over an already impressive game and did a great job (along with DarkHorse comics) to help bridge the gap created by the first game’s absence on the console. If you own a PS3, even if you have played the game in its previous form, you owe yourself to play through it again on the PS3. It’s that good.
You really can’t go wrong if you’re a PS3-only gamer wondering what all the commotion is about. This is the most complete package for a truly excellent game, and one of the best sci-fi experiences of the last decade, in any medium. You don’t need to buy again if you’ve already played it, but for newcomers, it’s essential gaming.
I've just 2300 or so words gushing about everything from my love of space to the best DLC seen thus far in video games, but the bottom line is this: if you do not buy Mass Effect 2, you're missing out on a game so good that it could (and honestly should) be in contention for Game of the Year again, a year after it already took so many high honors. It is, without a doubt, the deepest, most inviting world created thus far, going farther and growing more expansive than almost any medium available. It's immensely replayable, offers a story and characters that are all genuinely interesting and... just stop reading this and go buy the game already, will ya?
I could just say that ME2 improves upon the original in nearly every possible way, but it's far more than that. BioWare took the existing narrative and didn't just continue it, but built it into the framework of this sequel. Games like Quest for Glory and Baldur's Gate tip-toed in these waters years ago, and Dragon Age: Origins showed us real consequences just recently, but ME2 creates true continuity, where every decision truly matters. Mass Effect 3 better be spectacular, because it's going to be tough for BioWare to top this.
While Mass Effect 2 was originally released back in January 2010 for the Xbox 360 and the PC, this is a brand new title for PlayStation 3 owners. The new package offers a fresh experience for newcomers, with tons of DLC included, and a more fluid experience for returning players who have already experienced it. Overall, the game is inarguably one of the most solid titles to come out in quite some time. Offering a fantastic storyline that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish, BioWare has proven once again why it’s one of the top developers in the gaming industry. They took the time allotted and made an amazing game even more impressive. So what are you waiting for? Go get Mass Effect 2, it is available at retailers, and via the PlayStation Store.
Comic aside, this really is the same game we played and loved last year. The smattering of design hiccups are still present - the odd linear mission, and the chore-like but unavoidable mining mini-game - but so are all of the wonderful things - the fantastic dialogue, the thoughtful intelligence of it all, and that bit where Mordin starts singing. It's been said before, but it's worth repeating: Western RPGs will never be the same again, such is the impact of BioWare's work here. In short, Mass Effect 2 is bloody brilliant. Grab a fork, and tuck in.
So this latest release is still one of the best games in recent history, with a few visual improvements, a load of extra post-release content and all the refinement that twelve months at market can encourage. A year ago we urged all Xbox 360 owners to experience this game and now we have no hesitation in encouraging PlayStation 3 owners to do the same. BioWare may just have done something incredible: Mass Effect 2 is a genuine contender for Game of the Year 2010 and for the same title in 2011.
There's no doubt in my mind that this is one of the best games ever made and an entertainment experience that should be unreservedly celebrated. Whether this is your first time in the Mass Effect universe or the third version of the game you'll own, Mass Effect 2 is completely and utterly essential.
Everything we loved about the 360/PC versions, now on one disc and with all the DLC goodies included. We can’t name another game that so expertly mixes shooting, exploration and sweeping story. A shining beacon of our medium.
As you tour planets and space stations, assembling a crack team of galaxy saviours and meeting all manner of strange and sometimes sexy aliens, you'll also find endless sidequests and subplots to get drawn into. Even if you don't choose to take most of them on, their very existence helps to bolster the idea of the Mass Effect world as a functioning universe. Because that's what makes Mass Effect 2 great. Not the outstanding action, the compelling story, the huge depth of interaction, or any of the other ways in which the game demonstrates its outrageous surfeit of quality. It's because this is a game so coherent, you start to believe that you could actually live in it. Which is a good thing, because you'll almost certainly end up doing so.
If you really wanted to play this game when it was originally released you probably have, but there’s going to be a large portion of PS3 only owners that need to add this to their shopping lists when it hits the shops. With all the DLC included in this release, (the Dragon Age armour looks brilliant in case you were wondering), it’s a great purchase. Trust me, you will not be disappointed if you love great story-driven games that look great, feel very open-ended and have fantastic third person action. Mass Effect 2 is brilliantly crafted, no wonder it ended up as the IncGamers Game of the Year for 2010. Buy it.
Mass Effect 2 for the PlayStation 3 is easily one of the most enjoyable titles/series that I’ve played in my years as a gamer, ranking up there amongst Zelda and Halo as one of my favorite franchises of all time. The developers at BioWare have really set the bar high for action RPG’s and for the gaming world in general. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what BioWare has in store for us come next holiday season as Mass Effect 2 is going to be hard to top. I absolutely recommend picking up Mass Effect 2 for PS3 today. You won’t be disappointed.
If you’ve never experienced the richness within the Mass Effect universe, regardless of which platform you prefer, Mass Effect 2 PS3 is the definitive choice. From the enhanced engine to the loads of additional content, there really is no better package on the market. With Mass Effect 3 arriving before year’s end, there’s no better time to get acquainted (or re-acquainted) with Commander Shepard and the rest of the Normandy’s crew. Bravo BioWare. You’ve taken 2010’s almost-perfect Game of the Year and still managed to improve upon it.

Despite the flaws, the strengths are undeniable; Mass Effect is an amazing experience. Sci fi, shooter, and RPG fans should find plenty here to like, and with your data carrying over from the first game, Mass Effect 2 is the sequel that completes a satisfying second act and should lead the way to an action-packed conclusion with Mass Effect 3 this fall. This is sci fi and video games at near storytelling and game play perfection. Regardless of the platform, play Mass Effect 2.
It would be a critical error in judgement to let petty console rivalry and a misplaced sense of entitlement cause anybody to miss out on this space odyssey. To anybody else who, for one reason or another, hasn’t boldly gone into Mass Effect 2 yet; we suggest you plot a course for your local game shop at warp speed. Pre-set your faces for stunned.
So you can now see why so many Playstation 3 junkies are happy as clams. Bioware truly has made this package worth the money and shown that they not only care about their games, but also that they care about the gamer's experience. Because of these efforts they made the value of Mass Effect 2 is basically invaluable. For the same price of the 360 version (or at least when it was new) you're getting more for your money. And because of this value the fun factor of the game is magnified immensely.
Mass Effect 2 definitely deserves the accolades it has been receiving, and you will want to play it through twice - whether to try out Shepard’s other gender option, or to rethink some of the critical decisions you made first time around. I can honestly say I haven’t been this captivated by an RPG since The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and have joined the legion of fans eagerly awaiting the third instalment.
Mass Effect 2 is as engaging as it was a year ago. Despite lacking some of the content found in the 360 and PC versions thanks to the lack of the first game, the overall story of the game is left intact and gameplay is still as excellent as it ever was. While it may not be the most comprehensive experience the Mass Effect franchise has to offer, it's still an excellent game that's worth playing. There is now no reason for any RPG enthusiast not to play Mass Effect 2, as it is now the best RPG offered on the PlayStation 3. The inclusion of downloadable add-ons and an interactive comic within the game makes this an incredible value for those who never played the game before. PC and 360 gamers who have already finished Shepard's second outing won't lose anything by passing on this port, but PlayStation 3 owners have everything to gain by taking the plunge.
Indeed, Mass Effect 2 has far more heart and ambition than a lot of games we’ve played over the years and it's true to say that the beautifully designed planets, exciting characters and strong narrative play a huge part in creating this cinematic, interactive movie-like experience. Plus, it should be stressed that the exciting missions and intense bouts of combat are equally as epic as the stunning scenery that you’ll witness on your travels. Rest assured, the overall Mass Effect 2 experience is nothing short of spectacular, and with Mass Effect 3 just around the corner, there’s never been a better time to experience this sci-fi spectacular.
At the end of the day, Mass Effect 2 essentially does everything it does exceptionally well, and it shows from beginning to end. PlayStation 3 gamers had to wait a year to get their hands on Mass Effect 2, but the wait was well worth it. Not only do you have a game that’s already running on the engine for the upcoming Mass Effect 3, but you have a game packed with DLC and access to an in-game comic book that explains the game’s story to those new to Mass Effect. But don’t remain new to Mass Effect for long. Mass Effect 2 is a game that you should purchase, play, and enjoy. And you should do so as soon as time allows.
Game Informer Magazine
Despite a few differences between the two consoles, you ultimately can’t go wrong if you’re playing Mass Effect 2. The characters, the story, and the gameplay come together to deliver a jaw-dropping adventure unlike anything else. Yes, reliving the choices of the first Mass Effect as an interactive comic book pales in comparison to importing your own Commander Shepard. However, aside from losing that consistency in the universe, Mass Effect 2 is just as good on PS3 as it on 360.
PSM3 (Playstation 3 Magazine) UK
Quite simply, if the sci-fi setting appeals, Mass Effect 2 is unrivalled. It's an adventure you're unlikely to forget, and even less likely to put down before its thrilling climax.
Mass Effect 2 is one of the best RPG titles on the PS3 in quite some time and usually this genre is quite neglected or has poor third party releases. It goes the extra mile through story, gaming and graphics which you can really tell while you are playing. It may eat away your life for a considerable amount of time but once you have finished, you'll be sad because your Mass Effect experience will be finished. This is a must have game for the PS3... bring on Mass Effect 3!
ME2 features one of the best storylines in gaming, a sense of freedom that comes through in almost every action and interaction with characters, a reliable and rewarding style of combat, memorable emotional peaks and valleys, a massive amount of sci-fi goodness, and enough depth – on just about every conceivable level – to satisfy even the most ardent role-playing fan. I have my reservations and those won’t change, and the production, especially from a technical standpoint, isn’t perfect.
Looking only at the pros and cons (the report card), you might find the grade suspect. I would too. But despite all my gripes, Mass Effect 2 does more than enough to live up to its predecessor. You won’t give much attention to the unintuitive HUD, and the low level cap won’t stop most from playing the game again with added difficulty or for multiple story options. You'll get frustrated, you'll ask yourself why, but you'll still love it. Facing the dark reality of Mass Effect 2 has its stumbles and slips, but it’s a trip worth taking, no matter the destination.
The PlayStation 3 version of Mass Effect 2 proves, if nothing else, that the game holds up nicely a year after its debut. It's still a brilliant (albeit sometimes overly streamlined) RPG. That said, the PS3 version isn't quite the definitive version -- despite alleged improvements to the game engine -- so anyone who already owns the Xbox 360 version can comfortably pass this one up without feeling that they've missed anything.
Mass Effect 2 is that it has instantly become one of the best games on PS3 right now and has us gratefully waiting for Mass Effect 3. Mass Effect 2 is the perfect action RPG. It combines clever gameplay, action-packed combat, and overall great production value. Mass Effect 2 is a must play game for any system, including the new PS3 version making us eager to play through Mass Effect 3 later this year to find out how the trilogy ends.
Mass Effect still proves that it is one of the best game series this console generation. The story, characters, game play, and overall presentation are one of pure quality. For the price of a standard game, you get a deal worth around $85 and you can easily sink a good 40 hours into the main story and side missions. Even with the technical problems that exist in the PS3 version, I still would have to recommend picking up this title, both for the Mass Effect newcomers and veterans. It is a game that will go down as one of the greats.
PAL Gaming Network (PALGN)
Mass Effect 2 on PlayStation 3 is a brilliantly crafted package, with production values equal to the Xbox 360 version and excellent value courtesy of the included DLC. Technical blemishes and context issues are but minor flaws, with the game conveying an engrossing narrative and featuring some of the most memorable and engaging characters. The polished third-person gameplay, outstanding voice-work and stellar visuals add to the refined role-playing experience, with an entire galaxy of content waiting to be discovered. Mass Effect 2 exemplifies the importance of story in video games, and is obligatory playing for all.
Cheat Code Central
It's easy to spend upwards of forty hours playing Mass Effect 2, especially if you take the time to explore the universe. In between missions you can scan planets for resources in a fairly interesting mini-game and then give these resources to your ship's resident tech expert to research upgrades for weapons, armor, and the ship itself. And with the release of the PS3 edition, the game gets six hours longer and richer with the seamless inclusion of the Kasumi: Stolen Memory, Overlord, and Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC missions.
Mass Effect 2 is an absolute pleasure. It’s indulgent and sickly and so very, very moreish! It holds its plot and its characters in the highest of regards and envelops you in a universe of intrigue and delight. It has managed to meld together the Western RPG and cover shooter genres, circumnavigating the pitfalls present in both. It is not a perfect game; some missions can fall foul of the generic tropes present in all science fiction games, such as fetch quests and generic alien related hokum. These are minor blemishes on the face of a supermodel, and the overall quality of the title shines though at every occasion. Entrenching yourself in the mysticism and fiction is an invigorating experience that blots out any cracks in this monumental title. A polished, precise and truly astounding title awaits anyone willing to dive in, and drink deep and become inebriated by the brilliance on offer. Astounding!
Despite winning awards enough to fill a hundred trophy cabinets we still don't feel Mass Effect 2 gets enough credit for its achievements. No game, certainly nothing else by BioWare, has ever married action, role-playing and adventure elements with such seamless proficiency. In fact so skilful is the marriage of influences that it almost feels like a whole new genre - or at least the interactive movie come of age at last.
Bugs aside, Mass Effect 2 is every bit as compelling on the PS3 as it was on the Xbox 360 and PC last year. With the inclusion of all the DLC and the juiced-up Mass Effect 3 game engine this really is quite a treat for the PS3 gamers who have been clammering for Mass Effect since the first game came out back in 2007. In a year that will see some of the biggest RPG releases of the current console generation the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2 is an impressive kick off and an epic warm up for the final part of the trilogy which is due this November.
It’s possible that BioWare might have actually made a mistake porting this middle installment, or at least in the way they chose to bring in the backstory. PS3 gamers, dropped in right in the middle of a trilogy, aren’t nearly as likely to get attached to the Mass Effect universe the same way the rest of us have, because the first game was so vital for laying the groundwork for a new sci-fi universe - something that a relative few hand-drawn panels and a bit of new voice narration can’t possibly substitute for. I won’t go so far as to say BioWare shouldn’t have even tried to port this game to the PS3, but I just don’t see them instantly picking up a rock-solid new fanbase on Sony’s console. Mass Effect 2 is one of the best games made in recent years, but it’s at least partially because it was built on top of a solid foundation two years before, and this new target audience only gets to scratch the surface of that foundation before being thrust into a war with the Collectors.
Video Game Talk
If you haven’t played the original Mass Effect or Mass Effect 2, you would be foolish not to pick this up immediately. It’s an absolutely enthralling game that will easily last you 40 hours on a complete run-through if you are an explorer. It’s also worth playing again to see all the options that are created by giving the opposite answers during all the conversations. If you have love for the action RPG genre or simple value amazingly strong narratives, you can’t go wrong with Mass Effect 2 on the Playstation 3. It’s well worth the full retail price if you haven’t played through the game yet. Highly Recommended!
This port isn't as impeccable as the game deserved. Nevertheless, Mass Effect 2 still shines on the PlayStation 3 for the very reasons that it shone on other platforms. It is fine entertainment, but it's more than just lasers and loadouts--it's an adventure that invites you to get lost in its world and draws you close to those that inhabit it. Your actions both in and out of battle have weight because you care about the consequences. Almost everything Mass Effect 2 does, it does with uncommon quality. Its missions are varied and smartly structured. Its atmospheric art design uses color and lighting to evoke mystery and tension. And its well-acted characters stay with you even when you've returned to our more ordinary version of the Milky Way.
The pinnacle of Bioware’s many years honing their craft, Mass Effect 2 is one of the most important and enjoyable games ever made. The PlayStation 3 port may be a greater value by incorporating the bulk of available DLC into a single package, but it is still vastly inferior to the experience available on the Xbox 360. It’s like watching The Two Towers without having seen The Fellowship of the Ring, or attempting college before high school; PlayStation 3 players may not know what they’re missing out on, but they most definitely are missing out.
Gamers' Temple, The
So what's the verdict? There is no denying that Mass Effect 2 is a fantastic title and one that people will be talking about for years to come. It's also plain to see that the PS3 port is the definitive version of the game, with graphical upgrades, technical fixes and all that DLC right out of the box. All that is well and good, but without access to the original, PS3 gamers just don't get the full story.
Indispensable.
Many of you might have noticed how I have review Mass Effect 2 (PS3) as a port, and not as an individual game. Well, that’s because of how legendary, how memorable the original Mass Effect 2 was. While I love Mass Effect 2 on the Ps3, it has a hell lot of glitches and bugs that make it look like an unpolished game, which is exactly what Mass Effect 2 was not. So, does Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 live up to the name it made for itself a year ago? No. But is it an awesome game nonetheless, all its bugs aside? Yes. But which version should you buy? I’d say, the Xbox 360 version is still the version to get.
