Metal Gear Solid 4 is without doubt the perfect conclusion to a fantastic saga. Snake, it has been a long and exciting ride. You definitely deserve a long and peaceful rest.
Middle East Gamers (MEgamers)
This is it then, twenty years of history coming to an epic conclusion in what is Snake’s (and perhaps even Kojima’s) Swan Song; a true masterpiece that will be revered for years to come like its predecessors, but one that will stand through the tests of time and will still be referred to as perhaps the pinnacle of storytelling in videogames.
Jetzt im Handel! Das Ende einer Legende: In Teil 4 von Hideo Kojimas Schleich-Saga tritt Opa Snake seine letzte Dienstreise an. Vorhang auf für Metal Gear Solid 4!
Don't take my 10 to mean this game will be beloved by all, because it most certainly won't be. In fact, it's bound to engender more rabid detractors than a mediocre game would, which is the irony of excellence. Think of it as a video game equivalent of 2001: A Space Odyssey: you may love it, you may hate it, you may fall asleep during it. But you cannot deny that it is a work of art that has gone where few others have even dared, with a passion, intentionality, and personality that will imprint it indelibly into our cultural and artistic memory.
So is the game worth it? Hell yes it's worth it! If you were looking for a reason to purchase a Playstation 3 (if Resistance didn't do it for you), you now have the reason. It's the best game of this year. It's got action, it's got story, it's got a good online mode that isn't as inspiring as the game itself, but nonetheless really well-done. You have all of these things that make the game great, a full package, and it's only $59.99? Amazing price for what you get, absolutely amazing.
So, is it a worthy conclusion to one of videogaming's finest series? Certainly. It mixes everything that makes Metal Gear unique with the best elements from other modern game, while utilizing the true power of the PS3, and adds in one of the greatest, if not the greatest, story ever told in a videogame. Wrapping up a seemingly infinite amount of loose ends, adding in unprecedented freedom, ridiculous replay value, excellent production values, and a tear-jerker of an ending, it all results in what could well be the greatest videogame of all time.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots marks the final chapter in the Metal Gear Solid saga, and it could not be a stronger sendoff, as MGS4 is about as perfect a game as you can get. That is a big statement since I went into this review full expecting to be disappointed.
Every aspect of the game – from the comprehensible storyline to the updated controls, from the white-knuckle character battles to the lengthy cutscenes – it all exudes a certain air of quality.
Need I say more? If you own a PS3, then you really owe it to yourself to check out Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
As we’ve brought up before, sometimes we don’t find the time to finish games, or have no interest to. Then, along comes one that gets its shiny little hooks in and pulls us along for the ride. With Metal Gear Solid 4: Sons of the Patriots I took the bait and asked for more. I find it difficult to give it any other score.
In conclusion, after spending the best part of 30 hours finishing this crucial release, I can confidently disclose my answer to the following; does MGS4 live up to the hype? The answer, unequivocally, is yes. Not only does it match up to the hype, it welcomes it with open arms, embraces it, proceeds to dazzle you with a whole lot more. From its gritty, visceral battle zones, compelling storyline to the amount of depth and satisfaction contained with its gameplay, Guns of the Patriots is a mesmerizing experience from start to finish that should be experienced by any self-respecting PS3 owner out there. More importantly, however, is the fact the latest entry in this extolled franchise succeeds in delivering its ultimate promise -- to deliver an unforgettable closure to a legendary protagonist.
I’m not afraid to admit it either, I shed a few tears at the end of the game, and I don’t care what amount of crap I get for it, because it’s a masterpiece. I went into MGS4 thinking there was no way I’d end up giving this game a perfect score *I used to be attest to ever giving a game a perfect score*, but MGS4 has won me over as a modern masterpiece. If you think I’m crazy that’s fine, but until you’ve finished the single player you haven’t experienced the ending that I have. I will say right now that MGS4 has the best ending ever in a video game. While the debriefing is admittedly kind of weird, the ending of act 5 and the epilogue is the best ending ever in a video game, period. Thank you Solid Snake, I’ll never forget you.
Game Informer Magazine
Where the Metal Gear franchise goes from here is a mystery. Whatever happens, make no mistake: The story of Solid Snake ends here. With the series' last breath, Hideo Kojima's defining opus does more than just surpass the previous Metal Gear titles - it creates a landmark gaming experience that continually astounds with its variety, depth, and intelligence. Metal Gear Solid 4 is a masterpiece.
Rakkaus, jota Hideo Kojima on osoittanut pelisarjalleen ja Solid Snaken tarinan viimeiseen osaan, nostaa sen muiden yläpuolelle. Tarina lunastaa kaikki odotukset. Kysymyksiä ei jää avoimeksi, ja ensimmäisestä Metal Gear Solidista lähtenyt tarina, joka tuntui aivan liian monimutkaiselta videopeliin, on vastoin kaikkia todennäköisyyksiä saatu arvoiseensa päätökseen. Jokainen yksityiskohta on tarkkaan mietitty ja punnittu. Joitakin kauneusvirheitä näkyy toki siellä täällä, mutta... Ketä kiinnostaa?
If this happens to be Hideo Kojima’s last piece of work in the Metal Gear franchise it is indeed a sad day for video games, but it will be a great way to bow out. This game is brilliant and I find it difficult to believe that any game in the near future will be able to touch this brilliance.
Video Games Daily
It's stupid, it's nonsensical, it's over the top, it's full of awful dialogue, it demands long sittings and it hasn't changed much from the first game ten years ago. But then, it's Metal Gear Solid, so who cares? It's undeniably brilliant, captivating, exciting and downright fantastic, definitely worthy of at least a few furrowed brows throughout the experience. Metal Gear Online may not be perfect, but it's still a nice bonus on top of the existing game.
Thegame delivers on absolutely every front. Some might complain about thelength of cutscenes, but it is nothing new to the franchise. MGS 1,2 and 3 (especially 2) had a lot of cutscenes and codec sequencesso why would this one be any different. And just like the previous gamesyou can skip them. From an artistic standpoint MGS 4 is mindblowing a lot of the sequences are capable of dropping the jaw of even the mostcynical gamer. I don’t issue a lot of these, but I’m never really thisfulfilled or impressed with a game.
To be certain, this is the penultimate hardcore game. While it introduces a number of innovations, its core remains in tune with classic console gaming. Peppered throughout are moments that clearly hearken back to older installments or other games, yet it modernizes them in a way that ensures the experience is fresh and carries artistic value. More than a mere sequel, Metal Gear Solid 4 is a representational masterpiece to be remembered well beyond the years of this generation.
In contrast to Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3, MGS4 doesn’t mistake complexity for intelligence. If a schizophrenic person were trying to tell me a story, it’d be plenty complex but I’d have a hard time calling it intelligently structured. But in MGS4, the story is both crazy and crazy smart. It not only takes the stealth action genre to all new heights, but it is also one of the best tactical shooters ever. You’ll not find better cinematics anywhere, and you’re not likely to find a story with more substantial payoffs than this game. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the best in the series, the best in its genre, and the best game on the PS3.
Is it possible to give a game an 11? If so, this would be the game that would merit that score. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a title that exceeds all of the hype that was attached to the title. Regardless of whether you've seen every trailer and screenshot, read every preview and heard every interview, you won't get a full sense of how phenomenal this title is unless you sit down and experience it for yourself.
f the story-heavy presentation of previous Metal Gear games taxed your patience, Metal Gear Solid 4 won't change your mind. For anyone who appreciates games that rise above the simple act of pushing a few buttons and pulling a few triggers, Metal Gear Solid 4 is a stimulating ride that you won't soon forget. You'll want to see what happens next, yet when its long campaign draws to a close, you'll wish it would continue. That's not just because it's a well-told tale, but because that tale is woven through a thoroughly impressive game that tops its predecessors.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is the reason why you bought a PlayStation 3. If you've yet to feel that your PS3 purchase has been justified, here is your justification. There is no doubt about it, but this is easily the best experience you'll have on the PlayStation 3 to date, simply nothing comes close to MGS4's presentation, story-telling, gameplay, visuals, and sound. The amount of classic homages paid to the previous games, with one in particular, will leave you breathless and, perhaps, emotional. Kojima and co. have crafted a videogame that actually pokes at your intellectual thought process and your heart - arguably a first for the medium - and the end result is simply the greatest closing to a videogame saga ever. Simply stunning.
Quite simply, I could ramble on about this game all day long. There's just moments of absolute genius that make this game probably the best video game I've ever played - and I've played quite a few! Sure, the game has some rather long cut-scenes, has probably the longest ending I've ever seen, and requires a little bit of sitting around waiting for the game to be installed to your hard drive, but the sheer creative direction of this title make these otherwise annoying elements add to the games genius rather than hinder it. In all my years of writing about video games, I've never ever given a game a perfect score - in fact, I've never agreed with a perfect score, as I've felt that a game always has something it could work on. I just can't see any reason not to give this game full marks. Congratulations Konami - Quite simply the greatest way to finish off an immense journey - with perfection.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is a game that pushes. It pushes the PS3 into beginning to realize its potential. It pushes the stealth action genre forward at least two fold and keeps it Kojima-dominated. It pushes the potential of action set pieces from diversions to interwoven gameplay spectaculars. It pushes presentation to immense unified standards that are rarely ever heard of. It pushes the development standards of games themselves to new heights that developers need to learn from if they're going to take full advantage of everything this generation has to offer.
Finally, it pushes Snake to the best farewell he could ever have.
G4 TV: X-Play
While debate will no doubt rage over the story and its outcomes, there really isn't a single wrong move in the gameplay sections. Each area is intense and fun to sneak or fight your way through. The boss battles are some of the best ever seen in any videogame, with a couple that will definitely be talked about for years to come. Bonus items and challenging difficulty modes encourage multiple playthroughs. Kojima Productions has ended up delivering something fantastic. While it may or may not be a reason to purchase a PlayStation 3 all by itself, it should help make that decision easier for a lot of people.
I very rarely call games perfect, and though Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has room for gameplay tweaks here and there, when you look at its grand scale of and all that it successfully achieves, the game is, in my humble opinion, a one of a kind masterpiece. I doubt that any game series will ever build up to such a culmination as this one has, with so much thought, effort, and passion put into it. Hideo Kojima set out to move and excite people, to truly make a work of art, and not just a fun videogame. Metal Gear Solid 4 is an accomplishment like no other, but to truly appreciate it you have to know the history and see what has led up to it.
You could level some other minor complaints at Guns of the Patriots. The game stops to load a little too frequently, and it features not only an initial eight-minute install process but also several subsequent, shorter ones before each act. But none of the game’s minor blemishes are enough to detract from its massive overall impact. It’s the surprising entertainment value of the action, the mind-blowing visuals, and the completeness of the story’s conclusion that make this last installment so satisfying. Metal Gear Solid 4’s positive qualities make it one of the most significant game releases of this generation, and anyone with an appreciation for the evolving form of the medium would do well to play it from start to finish.
It's rather rare that I have absolutely no complaints about a game, but this is one of these particular cases. Nothing stands out as hindering it whatsoever. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will surely set the bar for this generations in terms of quality, and should be the benchmark for a truly great game. It's sad to see the series finally end, but on the other hand I've never seen a series end so superbly. It truly is the end of an era, with a series that has spanned all three PlayStation generations.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the most “complete” game I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing. It’s one of the only times I’ve finished a game and was able to sit back and honestly think “there’s not a single thing I would have changed about that.” Perfection is not a word I throw around lightly, but I’ll apply it to MGS4. Every single aspect of the game shines, and it’s clear the development team truly cared about giving their fans a final chapter this legendary series deserves. There are moments (especially in the final few hours) in which you’ll become completely lost in the game, almost forgetting you’ve got a controller in your hand. It’s the absolute pinnacle of gaming as a form of entertainment, and raises the entire medium to a level of art never seen before.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is the culmination of 20 years worth of console-defining games. What makes it so incredible is that MGS4 actually lives up to those 20 years and does the entire series justice in spite of the massive hype, anticipation and expectations resting on its shoulders. Metal Gear Solid 4, whether you know it or not, is one of the reasons you bought your PlayStation 3. More to the point, it's one of the reasons you still play video games.
I could go on for another five pages about how much I loved the game, but I will leave it at this. If you own a PS3 this game is a must own. If you are a Metal Gear fan this could easily be the best experience you will ever have. Even with the small things you can nitpick about the game; it will truly be hard to top this one for a long time to come.
Metal Gear Solid 4 will undoubtedly be the subject of debate for many years to come. The unconventional approach to delivering a triple-A game by centering the single-player game around more non-interactive elements than interactive is sure to ruffle a few feathers; the viability of different play styles might lead people to believe it's a second-rate third-person shooter; and the emphasis on nanomachines and PMCs, without being preachy, might be too topical for some. Regardless, right now it's one of the best-looking, engaging, and emotionally driven experiences, with the gameplay to match, on the PS3 or any console.
Game industry News (GiN)
But in the end, is there closure? Is this truly the end of the Metal Gear Solid series? And if so, was it worth it? Without a doubt the answer is a resounding yes! It is ironic that Guns of the Patriots came out during the middle of the summer movie season as it’s truly the blockbuster that we have come to expect. It is now time for Hideo Kojima and Snake to take a long deserved rest. They earned it!
In the end, everyone's a winner. The Playstation 3 finally gets its "savior", Kojima gets his masterpiece, and gamers get one one of the best gamers of all time. And they all lived happily ever after.
MGS 4 can be the pioneer in a new way to create and experience a videogame but I hardly believe anyone else can repeat the winning recipe, unless Kojima does another one…
All who play will be engrossed by the great story and action. There are so many ways to play this game, full on action or slow paced stealth so everyone is happy. With so many cool little touches, this game will take forever to get through and experience it all. Even the naysayer’s who feel this is not really a game but a long movie will have to shut up and take note as this truly is what the PS3 is all about....At last an epic title that the console can be proud of.
If you’ve ever loved any one of the Metal Gear games, or any moments from the series, there will come a moment when MGS 4 will send your spirits soaring. If you’ve loved them all, well then there’ll be many, many more. It’s a masterpiece. But forget you read that. Go play it and find out for yourself. Because it’s the kind of game that, if you play it after being told it’s a masterpiece, might end up disappointing you because of the hype. So forget the hype. Forget that it’s a magnificent, ground-breaking, masterpiece. Just play it, and enjoy a dazzling, heart-lifting, voyage of discovery.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is finally the game to sell the Playstation 3 console, it is exclusive, dramatic and looks absolutely gorgeous. It is an uplifting experience and is totally polished and more importantly, engrossing and fun, one of the few masterpieces of 2008 and surely a good contender for game of the year. Make no mistake, if you are already a fan of the series, this is going to sate your appetite and then some. If you don’t already have a Playstation 3 then this is a good time to make an investment. Just kiss goodbye to several months of your life.
Game Freaks 365
What a package. I didn't even touch on Metal Gear Online, the multi-player aspect of Metal Gear Solid 4 that allows for all kinds of different online modes, including a Snake-vs.-everyone match. It is still the single-player that will have you most enthralled. Everything about this game, from the graphics and cut-scenes to the voice acting and past references, will have you begging for more. Metal Gear Solid 4 is a fitting conclusion to the entire franchise. Snake, we salute you.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots sets the benchmark for all PlayStation 3 games to come. The movie-style presentation is profound, the action is excellent and the story will blow your mind. It’s one of those games that will be stuck firmly in your mind for years to come. If you’re looking for an excuse to make a PlayStation 3 purchase, then Guns of the Patriots should provide all of the justification you’ll ever need.
When it comes down to it, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots provides what may easily be the most memorable experience of this generation so far. Despite being one of the most hyped games of this generation so far, every Metal Gear fan has no reason to not get Metal Gear Solid 4. If you’re one of those people that wanted to get into previous Metal Gear Solid games, but found the gameplay to not be accessible enough for you, MGS4 should be the game that welcomes you with arms wide open. If the cutscenes and story were what kept you from jumping in earlier, MGS4 most likely won’t change your mind.
Game Informer Magazine
Guns of the Patriots pays off not just because it's the long-awaited resolution to a saga that has captured my imagination - the game expands its horizons and evolves to deliver the best experience in the series.
That Gaming Site
This game is not perfect, although for fans of the series or those who enjoy immersion in their experience will walk away impressed. Few games have been able to impress me to this level. A PS3 must buy for a majority of gamers.
Hideo l’aveva previsto. L’ha previsto.
PlayStation 3:lle MGS 4 on myös merkittävä virstanpylväs. Ensimmäistä kertaa todella sulavaa teräväpiirtografiikkaa saavutetaan muuallakin kuin mainosmiesten puheissa, ja koneen tehoja aletaan muutenkin ulosmitata kiitettävästi. Jos muut kehittäjät seuraavat esimerkkiä, Sonyn tuotteen valinneille on vihdoin luvassa muutakin kuin kilpailijaan nähden identtisiä pelejä kovempaan hintaan.
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a fitting final chapter in Solid Snake’s run in the series. Unlike other long time gaming characters, Kojima shows Snake as an aged solider still battling it out, not only against his enemies, but the advancement of life. Aside from a few nitpicks in the gaming department, Metal Gear Solid 4 is as solid as ever. Guns of the Patriots is one of the best gaming experiences the Playstation 3 can exclusively offer. If you are a Solid Snake fan, or just someone who wants to see what all the hype is about, Metal Gear Solid 4 is worth the investment of your time.
MGS4 on elämää suurempi kokonaisuus.
Cheat Code Central
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a title I have been anxiously waiting for. Several things that happen in the game will give hardcore fans brain meltdowns, but even newcomers will be gradually eased into the story with flashbacks from previous games, so everyone can really understand what is happening. The control modifications especially make this entry more accessible to newcomers, by leveling the playing field. While some will have issues with given parts of the game, they are so small and trivial they don't even matter. Whether this is Solid Snake's final hoorah is something you will have to find out for yourself, and trust me, you will not be disappointed. MGS4 is the reason you bought your PS3!
The Review Busters
Enough is enough with cut scenes. If programmers are going to add these into the game then they better back it up with just as much gameplay. Metal Gear Solid 4 is a fantastic game, but when you get little or no gameplay at times then you might find yourself turning off your Playstation 3.
Overall this game is an incredible experience and a definite must have for any PS3 owner. Even if you’ve never played a Metal Gear Solid game before, I still suggest reading up on the storyline and picking this game up, you won’t be disappointed.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is epic. It is a title that will be remembered for years to come as the game that truly showed what the PS3 can do. It may have taken them four years to do it, but the four years were worth it and there is no doubt that this truly ties it all up. It is a shame to see such a legendary series come to an end but we must give them credit for quitting while they are ahead. It may have its problems, but Metal Gear Solid truly is the first must own PS3 exclusive, and for that Sony will be laughing all the way to the bank. It is good enough to buy a PS3 system for. It is a game that truly must be seen and played, and while we have no doubt it has its issues, the good far outweighs the bad. This is the end, but it is only the beginning for the legendary status this series is sure to hold for years to come.
Despite any perceived shortcomings we see and play, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is still thoroughly wonderful. The emotional impact and the player’s investment in the story and characters are the game’s greatest assets. It refines the MGS formula and introduces just enough new (or respectfully influenced) ideas to ensure that it stands on its own as a game. But where MGS4 really succeeds is in delivering an experience unlikely to ever be surpassed by Kojima ever again, providing fans everything they want to see, twists you won’t expect and more raw, lavish creativity than the video gaming medium probably deserves. Take a bow, Snake; it’s been a long and consistent delight after all these years.
PAL Gaming Network (PALGN)
The only way to describe Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is that it's a unique masterpiece. Kojima sticks to his guns, (finally?) gets the formula 'right' and answers all, in one of the best experiences of the HD era yet. Never before has a game been so expensive looking but polished, had such an epic story behind it or such focused yet dynamic gameplay. For those who have been craving the defining experience on the PS3, this is it.
rom the story and graphics to the numerous Easter eggs for the fans, Metal Gear Solid 4 is the Game of the Year so far, and if you have a PS3 you need to play it. We were skeptical that a Metal Gear title would be a killer app, but we were happily proven wrong.
Game of the Year? Who knows. Experience of the Year? Almost certainly.
Metal Gear Solid 4 doesn't deserve a score at all. It shouldn't be rated among other games, as it can generate emotions and experiences rarely had in video games. A lot of games will look bad when put next to Metal Gear Solid 4.
I'm actually envious of people that will play the game for the first time, hopefully as I did without any spoilers, because it's such a unique and rewarding experience. It should go without saying that this is a game anyone who owns a PS3 should buy, and it's probably no real stretch to say that people should buy a PS3 for this game alone. It's that good. The only real hemming and hawing I'm going through right now are purely a matter of figuring out just how to quantify that with a score.
Mit "Guns of the Patriots" vollendet Hideo Kojima sein Lebenswerk.
Odds are that if you own a PS3, you’ve already purchased and played this game. If you haven’t, you need to run out and buy this game right away. Coupled with a download via the Playstation Store that’ll explain the series to you so far, this game is playable even if you haven’t been following the series for years.
Metal Gear Solid 4 is a unique, multi-layered experience that, when all is said and done, is a worthy conclusion to an important series. In addition to coming through as a sequel, the game stands as a ringing endorsement for the technical capabilities of the PlayStation 3. Some elements of the game aren’t as progressive as its technology, but taken as whole it’s still one of the most remarkable games of this generation. As for Old Snake, regardless of your feelings about the series, this soldier has given his all and truly deserves his final salute.
While it isn't clear where the series goes from here (though a few clues are dropped that the series will continue), the one thing that is clear is that Snake's story has come to an end. Though flawed in some areas, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is one of the most complete experiences currently available and a must-have for PS3 owners.
Whether or not you're a fan, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is its own sort of masterpiece. The story, for all of its meanderings, addresses questions raised throughout the series with a potent, discussion-worthy response. As the book closes - perhaps forever, perhaps not - on Solid Snake, fans and non-fans alike are treated to the very best gameplay the series has seen to date. Is there really anything more we could ask for from a video game? Farewell Snake... you may be gone, but MGS4 ensures that you'll never be forgotten.
So, yes, MGS4's heritage is at once its greatest strength and most damning shortcoming. Perhaps these compromises in the name of closure are for the best, though -- after all, now that Metal Gear is over, Kojima Productions is free to give these phenomenal gameplay concepts a fresh start, free from 20 years of continuity. But only if they choose to, of course. That's the whole point.
Its unlikely any game this year will have divided fans and created so many debates, which was perhaps Kojima's plan all along. Despite his constant attempts to pass the series on to his team, its hard to imagine anyone else being able to handle the knotted hydra that he has created. Many will mourn the end (or is it?) of the series, but with the plot truly buried, perhaps it can finally move on and become the game that it so often hinted it could be, as much as the singular artistic creation it always has been. For all that, though, Guns Of The Patriots is a magnificently entertaining game. It would be irresponsible to recommend it as universally as Halo or ICO, or to place it alongside Resident Evil 4 as a genuine series reboot, but for those who fall under its spell, it could easily become one of their favourite games of the year.

With all of this said, it might be easy to conclude that Metal Gear Solid 4 is a mixed basket. To some extent this is true. The focus on passive storytelling, the sometimes unbalanced gameplay, and the subpar multiplayer could easily be turn-offs to some. Still, for fans of the series and gamers in general, it is more likely that they will find a grand experience in Guns of the Patriots. Despite the flaws, there is still an incredible adventure to be had in Guns of the Patriots, and there is no denying how much care was put into its creation. Metal Gear Solid 4 is dramatic, moving, challenging and fun, and if you own a PS3, most certainly worth checking out.

That about does it for Metal Gear Solid 4, it’s an amazing achievement for the teams that worked on it and more than lives up to being a next-generation video game. Graphics, gameplay, voice work, and presentation are all mind-blowing good and despite being a love letter to fans, it is accessible to anyone wanting to play. Unfortunately, it fails to fuse the right balance of story and gameplay. Still, it manages to accomplish the most important thing the team set out to do, closing the series with an ending that leaves you satisfied, something few games these days accomplish.
Metal Gear Solid 4 had a lot to live up to and it's done so brilliantly. It's a game that will go down in history as one of the most ambitious and cinematic ever made, but also, finally, and more importantly, it will go down as a MGS game with gameplay that doesn't polarise opinion. It's not without it problems, most notably in the change of pace in the last third and the often laborious cut scenes (if you could play even half of the best cinematic moments MGS4 would wipe the floor with the best games we've ever seen), but MGS fans won't care. Although unquestionably a game everyone should play, when you're forced to take the back seat the blurred line between a game and movie prevents MGS4 from being the 10/10 masterpiece we hoped it would be.
With the release of Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4, the moment millions of fans have been waiting for is finally here. As the final chapter in the Solid Snake saga, the game was supposed to bring closure (and, perhaps more importantly, answers) to the series that was introduced over 20 years ago on the NES. It appears that Kojima and friends have succeeded in nearly every way, crafting a title that not only answers all of our questions, but make us care about Snake more than we ever thought we could. While it's not without its issues, Metal Gear Solid 4 is the best game on the PlayStation 3, as well as one of the finest titles we'll see this year.
To sum up Snake’s exit is honestly more then we could’ve hoped for. It’s certainly what Sony needed for the PS3 and the constant nods and cheeky references to earlier games will appease the hardcore fans who have been waiting for so long –and that’s ultimately who this game was made for. Like the previous titles, it’s bound to split gamers in half and cause many a debate over its ‘merits’ but that just goes to prove how important the series is to people.
Yet, despite my or anyone else’s qualms about the game it still is a great game that can be enjoyed by anyone willing to give it a shot. Even though it may not force us to think about real world issues or provide anything really groundbreaking outside of sound design, the fact that it manages to explain and bring a story over a decade old to a satisfying conclusion is something very few game/movie/TV series’ actually do, and this game did it.
For those holding out for that one must-have PlayStation 3 exclusive title to justify the shiny machine's unfaltering price, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots may or may not be the answer. While it may be an exceptional work of art and a material example of the PS3's technical capabilities, you'll either enjoy it, or you won’t. Like Snake's old cardboard box, much of the game is only here for fan-service - novelty and nostalgia purposes; it really goes above and beyond in that respect. However, if the game's humour and drama is not your style and you don't have the history for the nostalgia, then some pretty polygons, a long-winded story and a bit of generic stealth-action might be all MGS4 has left for you. If I could put two ratings in the box below, one would be 10 out of 10 for Metal Gear fans, 7.8 for the average gamer. But each game only gets one score so let's split the difference.
Armchair Empire, The
For some reason I felt it was important to play this "final" chapter of the Metal Gear Solid series - mainly to see what all the fuss was about - and I have to admit that I did have fun with the game even without a background rooted in MGS lore. There are still problems with Metal Gear Solid 4, like the clumsy, ham-handed final boss fight (even if it makes sense within the context of the game) and forever spawning enemies, but there's enough to keep the scales weighed the other way that it's still worth adding to your game library.
Overall Metal Gear Solid 4 will be a particular taste, but this latest instalment is more likely to please a bigger audience than previous titles in the series. Thanks to the pain-staking attention to detail by the Kojima team, no PS3 owner should go without seeing this beautifully presented game in action. Just be prepared for long periods of no gameplay as you are forced to watch a mini-movie and some strangely placed comedic elements.

Metal Gear Solid has always been a story of duty in the face of obsolescence, and if this is really it for Kojima’s chapter – and who knows, maybe the entire series – his duty has been fulfilled. MGS4 is not the game it could have been; nor is it the game it would have been had the series grown with the benefit of hindsight; nor is it the game it should have been if you believed that early trailer. But it is faithful to its fans, its premise and its heart, delivering an experience that is, in so many ways, without equal. In years to come, as people stand before the grave marked ‘Tactical Espionage Action’, they’ll feel little choice but to salute.
To call Guns Of the Patriots Kojima's masterpiece would be to do him a disservice because, with a blank slate and no expectations, his talent could shine far brighter. Where Hideo Kojima goes from here is limited only by his imagination. For now at least, we can content ourselves with flawed brilliance.
GNT - Generation Nouvelles Technologies
You're sorry to see Snake go. But should you be? Guns of the Patriots is a frustrating, fractured game that turns Metal Gear Solid's world upside down several times over, but never changes it. It just burrows deeper into what fans love and detractors hate than ever before, and it will make few converts. It's a crying shame, given how many genuinely classic gaming moments there are here, given the countless exquisite creative touches, but Metal Gear Solid 4 is its own worst enemy. You could not ask for a funnier, cleverer, more ambitious or inspired or over-the-top conclusion to the Metal Gear Solid series, but it's definitely time to move on.
With five difficulty levels, enjoyable stealth based play and plenty of over the top action, Metal Gear Solid 4 is one of the best PlayStation 3 games. That said, its features, acceptable 10 years ago, seem foolish given the better playing games on the market. Snake's epic, final act just isn't the triple A extravaganza we expected, and it's clear that if Konami intends to continue this franchise or spin off into something new, it needs to study its competition and evolve, delivering shorter cut scenes and superior shooting. But for now, this is one of the most important games in history and you'll dig its cool boss battles, at times witty dialogue and unrivaled sneaking mechanics. Just be sure to keep a magazine handy when those cut scenes get ridiculous.
I still loved the experience, couldn’t wait to play more, and am playing through again (keeping my unlocked items and Drebin Points) for fun, but more than in any other Metal Gear game I feel that this is to see the next story event unfold rather than for the joy of playing (so don’t even think about playing this until you’ve gone through at least the standard Metal Gear Solid games). Kojima’s cinematic direction is a massive asset to the project, but in many ways has overshadowed the core gameplay that makes it less fun to play than its predecessors for those that love the style; Play them first, they’re better games, and then you’ll forgive the weaker elements in MGS4 to see how it all plays out. Then again, maybe Kojima’s just trying to make it appeal to the generic FPS fan slightly more. I just wish there was more game behind the story.
If like me you've waited a long time for this, ignore the final score, sit back and enjoy every wonderful cut-scene that Guns of the Patriots has to offer. For MGS fans, Kojima-san has delivered a masterpiece, but it's certainly an acquired taste, now more so than ever before. The core stealth/action gameplay is beginning to show signs of age eerily close to Old Snake himself, presumably Kojima-Productions realises this only too well. Guns of the Patriots won't sell PS3's to newcomers, but it is the perfect conclusion to a series Playstation fans have always prized. If you fall into this category but haven't yet taken the plunge, then now could be a very good time to pick up a PS3.
I’ve never played a game where playing the previous ones was a pre-requisite rather than an option. It is a big risk to take, one that only a true auteur with enormous confidence in himself, his product and his legacy could create. I’ve fulfilled Kojima's requirements, thus this game is for me. It’s simply unfortunate that the degree to which this otherwise magnificent game succeeds will be dependant upon each individual.
Still a must-play for Metal Gear fans who've accepted the series' quirks and can get over the fact that it's not quite as cohesive as MGS3: Subsistence.
While Guns of the Patriots boasts lashings of in-game invention and creativity that's largely wrapped up in superb style and execution, it's all so unforgivably tainted by jaw-dropping gameplay brevity that it's truly difficult to raise the many, many good points above what is, for the most part, a succession of cut scenes that leave the player with an overwhelming sense of disconnection from one of gaming's most compelling characters and interactive franchises. It's a sad way to bid farewell to Solid Snake, he - and we - deserved much more.
By anyone else’s standards, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is an example of excellence; a game that knows its trade, and hammers it for all its worth. But when placed in the context of the Metal Gears before it, Snake’s latest and last adventure feels a touch diminutive and hollow. It’s a slightly sour end for a man who changed the world, but this game’s lasting legacy is that it will no doubt encourage thousands of gamers to play the originals all over again, when Snake was a little green, a little flirty and definitely not over-the-hill.
The Video Game Critic
There's plenty to master, but the context-sensitive "action" button is clumsy when things heat up, and the aiming mechanism is all over the place. MSG4's clear highlight is its fantastic cast of original, creepy villains. Each of these twisted creations will toy with your senses and strike fear into your heart. MGS4 has a lengthy installation process, and you'll have to install again several times over the course of the game. You can save your progress at any time. Metal Gear Solid 4 is very good when you're actually playing it, but if I couldn't skip the cut-scenes, I wouldn't play this at all.
