NFS ProStreet is from EA Black Box and it is about legal racing on courses comprised of city streets. This is still peddle to the metal racing on street courses, but rather that being illegal, ProStreet buckles players into the driver’ seat with the simple goal of winning races and working up the ladder. You can follow the main course through the career path (and the game will allow players to create two careers but no more than that) or you can take side trips to other races.

All in all, Need for Speed ProStreet is yet another highly enjoyable entry into the series. It takes on a slightly more realistic approach with its handling characteristics, albeit still maintaining that classic Need for Speed sense of speed. There is a slight learning curve, but the game is without a doubt the most rewarding since, perhaps, Hot Pursuit 2. It's much longer than Carbon, with far more depth in virtually every aspect - so it's got the value thing locked down. It looks pretty solid, and sounds like a symphony of angels. It may have some really screwy statistical data, but that doesn't erase the fun you'll still have with the game. Need for Speed ProStreet is a definite buy.
Need for Speed fans may initially be put off by ProStreet's deviation from the current franchise formula, but true racing fans will appreciate the attention to detail that EA has added to the actual important part of the game: the racing.

The one undoubtedly cool thing that ProStreet brings to the table is it's online play (except on Wii), where you can create your own race days and invite friends to compete in them. The race day will keep a persistent leaderboard of everyone's progress, so you can always go back and knock off your buddy. How often do I change my motor oil, you ask? Whenever I damn well feel like it.

Not only does the track based racing highlight the game's less-than-stellar car physics, it makes the game's attempt at a story feel all the more disjointed and uninspired. ProStreet does have some impressive graphics, but its gameplay is about as vanilla as they come.
Honestly, we still prefer Most Wanted to ProStreet even though ProStreet offers significantly improved tire smoke that actually wraps around the wheel wells of your car, because Most Wanted had cops that chased us and provided a really compelling reason to drive as fast as humanly possible. Somehow, without the incentive of resisting arrest (and with the incentive of unlocking even more commercials and advertisements, blech) our interest in this franchise is beginning to wain.

Because there isn’t much else to do (e.g. there’s no free-roaming city to explore!) you can’t really avoid it too much. The entire development team seems to have just tried too hard to make a decent title, and changed key areas of their previous titles which simply shouldn’t have been changed. Sadly, this Need for Speed title is the first one for a long time that needs to be left on the shelf. Go back to what we had before EA, it’s much better.
