I’m happy to report that NHL 10 is a nearly flawless title; only the most cynical and jaded gamers will take issue with any of the game’s extremely minor problems. Out of all the major sports, hockey is probably the easiest to translate to video games. Ever since 1992, we’ve had at least decent hockey games, and EA’s newest entry is, without a doubt, the highest point in a series of high points. With NHL, AHL, international, and European league teams on the roster, along with unlockable (or purchasable, if you’re a cheater) skill upgrades, there’s no shortage of content, meaning many fans will easily get a full year of entertainment out of it. Every year, EA raises the bar on its stellar hockety series, and this year's offering is no different. It looks, sounds, and feels like real hockey, it's easily one of the best sports games on the market today, and even passing fans of hockey shouldn't hesitate to pick this game up immediately.
After the spectacular game of hockey that NHL 09 offered, I was apprehensive of NHL 10, worried that EA Canada would be unable to outdo itself yet again. I’m happy to say that those fears were unfounded, and by now, I really should just trust the NHL development team to bring its ‘A’ game all the time. NHL 10 is EA Sports’ best hockey title yet, offering considerably improved gameplay and another hour-eating mode in Be A GM. I played two games of NHL 09 at a friend’s house last night, and I found it difficult to go back; I felt hamstrung by its lack of boardplay and precision passing. That alone should tell you that if you’re a fan of the NHL series, or hockey in general, you need to pick up NHL 10.
There's no doubt that NHL 10 has been shaped to appeal to more casual fans by giving them the ability to cut straight to the chase. Yet, for the hardcore hockey fan, there's even more realism and depth. Not all of the additions make the game more fun or fair, but they're steps in the right direction towards making an already excellent sports game peerless.
NHL 10 is an excellent hockey game. It’s probably the best one yet.
Game Informer Magazine
While the franchise mode has its faults, it’s still vastly improved over last year’s offering. Coupled with the other outstanding modes and the most polished gameplay in the sports genre, NHL 10 is still more than worth the price of admission.
NHL 10 continues to keep the long-running franchise a success and a delight to play. The additions to this year are certainly not as drastic as NHL 09 were, but the fine tuning does enough to make the overall product an enjoyable one. Those who found last year’s version to be the crème de la crème might hold off from picking this one up, but for everyone else, this is a must own hockey title and one that only makes you question where else EA Sports can take this great franchise.

NHL 10 is one hell of a good hockey game. It nails playability, presentation, gameplay variety, online options, and realism. It also is one of the best local multiplayer sporting experiences available. As is the case with any annual update, the differences implemented, while significant, may not be compelling enough for many NHL 09 owners to upgrade. However, any self-respecting, hockey-loving gamer would do well to stay up to date.
But going into other small details, like the occasional goalie who comes too far out of the crease, or players who tend to get stuck up along the boards during a line change, would be nitpicking at things that don't hamper the game. It's been great to put NHL 10 through its paces and I would love to go on and on about it, but to put it succinctly, if you thought NHL 09 was great, you'll love '10. And for the uninitiated hockey fan looking for a near-authentic experience on the ice, you can do little wrong by picking this up.
NHL 10 is the epitome of hockey games. Granted the changes are not as revolutionary as last year's game. What is here is the best experience a fan of the sport could ask for. 2K Sports has its work cut out for it, and my colleague will be reviewing their effort later this week. If you prefer EA's take on the sport then NHL 10 is definitely going to please. Fans of hockey couldn't be luckier, let's just hope next year brings more innovation to the table.
Between NHL 2K10, which I rather liked in some ways, and NHL 10, there is a clear victor. If you're not hockey-mad enough to own both games this year, buy NHL 10. NHL 2K10 has its moments, but EA's title has the greater share of great moments. In online play, NHL 10 is far more technically stable in making and sustaining connections between Xbox Live gamers. NHL 09 was a great game, and moving on to NHL 10, there was not much presenting itself for addition or overhaul. EA's sports developers managed to make refinements and enhancements that are more than just the annual churn. Obviously, this title is highly recommended for anyone buying a hockey game this autumn, but if you've never played a hockey simulation, or it's been years and years since you've bothered, I can't think of a better place to start or return than NHL 10.

All in all, NHL 10 is a lot of fun, as I can attest to the 50+ and rising hours that I've put into the game so far. People who purchased the previous year's version may want to hold off for another season for more additions to propagate in the franchise before re-upping.
NHL 10 is a great hockey game, don’t get me wrong. The action is as good and as authentic as I’ve ever seen from a hockey outing and fans of the sport who didn’t pick up last year’s game have no reason to miss out this time. This package is as complete and all-encompassing as any sports game out there with great multiplayer and single-player modes. The biggest problem that fans of the series will have is that it just isn’t all that different from NHL 09. There are “new” modes that are tacked on pieces from things that we’ve seen in the past and the gameplay refinements are a mixed bag that feel as though they could have been tuned just a bit better before launch. Nothing is a bad or poor choice that even comes close to ruining the experience, but there could have been more done to expand the core gameplay and offering of modes.
Middle East Gamers (MEgamers)
It might be a bit too hard recommending NHL 10 to none hockey fans. But we cannot see a better way to get into the sport for those who might be interested. Trying to watch live hockey without understanding the rules or knowing any of the players can get pretty boring, but playing a game, a very good game, that represents the sport will ease you right into it. NHL 10 welcomes new gamers and old time fans of the series equally offering a completely different experience for each one of them. Some problems in the series remain unsolved, but the little additions to the already outstanding core turn yet another NHL game into a winner.
Between the two major hockey releases, it’s still the better hockey game; you could always be playing NHL 2K10 instead with the big highlight of riding a Zamboni.
Our expectations for NHL 10 might have been a little high given the success of NHL 09. This unfortunately sets up NHL 10 to be a minor let down even before it has left the bench. Well, NHL 10 isn’t a let down by any means, but its also not going to be placed in the same regard as last years skater. The best news is that the NHL franchise finally feels re-energized, and NHL 10 is another great offering of this re-energized game of hockey. The new features are worth the ticket price as I’m sure they will continue to be refined as the series treads on. NHL fans who want their hockey with a little more aggression, NHL 10 is worth the upgrade, for all others feel this one out a little bit, because that old copy of NHL 09 is still the big winner. Keep throwing those punches, and until next year, we’ll keep skating.
NHL 10 is a great game, hampered only by a lack of anything new. Okay, there’s new stuff there, some fixes, some tweaks - all familiar and standard EA Sports upgrades. If you have NHL 09 it’s good, if you don’t - it is so much better, and if hockey ever gets back on the box it would be better still.
NHL 10 is fantastic hockey videogame that fans of the sport would do well to check out. But its biggest problem is that it really doesn't make any major changes to from last year's tried-and-true formula.
The bottom line with NHL 10 is that if you have NHL 09, you don't absolutely, positively need it. But there are enough new features and little adjustments and fixes both online and off that any self-respecting hockey fan should probably still go for it. EA Sports has once again done an absolutely tremendous job of simulating shinny.
NHL 10 is just about everything we expected, plus a little bit more. We will be taking a look at the competition – NHL 2K10 – later this week, but it’s safe to say that EA’s effort has definitely set the mark. Keep a close eye out for our next hockey review before you decide which game to purchase, but if 2K delivers, you could be faced with an awfully difficult decision…
Given adequate time though, NHL 10 easily has the potential to join FIFA 10 in your collection of most played sports games. You’ll be slapping the burnt biscuit all over the ice like a pro, laughing your ‘face-off’ in no time.
