In the days when a six-hour experience can be packaged and sold off for $60, this is a breath of fresh air. This is not the most innovative title out there, but you will get a lot more than your money's worth out of it.
The Review Busters
Besides the trip down memory lane (a road that seems bumpier than you remembered), the best part about this game is the $29.99 price tag. I hate to think what some people on the bowling machine's virtual console paid to get some of these games. Heck, buying the Sonic games alone would put you over the cost of this game. I'm giving Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection a 9 out of 10 even though it reminded me how much frustration came with Comix Zone, but I had to ding it a point for no online play.
Yes, there are games from your SEGA days that you won't find on this "ultimate" collection, and yes, the lack of online multiplayer is sucky, but neither of those things should keep SEGA fans away from this game. Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection is a slick package, a lot of unlockables, and 49 games; it can all be yours for $30. That's a steal, and I can't recommend picking this one up enough.
For a set of gaming premises that have since aged and become run-of-the-mill, how do you place them amongst the hardware firepower and technological advance we now calmly sit amongst? The answer is simple. Even though many of these titles can be hunted down for free online or downloaded for a small wedge of cash, Sega have rounded up their proudest moments and presented them to a willing audience who can now appreciate the glory days of the mega-company. True, since then it hasn’t all been fun and games for the team that went on to craft the underrated Dreamcast. They want you to remember what put them in a position to create a console in the first place, as they bring back the range of products that acted as a catalyst for spontaneous teenage emotion in the 1990s.
If you remember the 16-bit wars fondly, there's no reason to pass up this treasure trove, especially at a price that works out to around 60 cents a game. Perhaps some don't want this set because they already bought some of the included games on older sets or as DLC. We can't blame you for being hesitant, but the odds are pretty low that you have even half of these that will play on a current system. While every game isn't a winner, Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection is the best you can do, outside of Japan anyway. At least until the next, even more Ultimate Collection.
Sega's latest 16-bit compilation, Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, brings over 40 games from the late '80s/early '90s to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Fans of the classic games gain numerous bonus items, including interview clips, classic arcade and Master System games (Zaxxon and Phantasy Star) and a large assortment of Achievements and trophies. Everything looks impressive with high definition graphics, and Sega restored the old school audio to sweeten the deal. That said, there's no online play and several favorites, including Herzog Zwei, After Burner, Toe Jam and Earl and Gunstar Heroes, didn't make the cut. Nevertheless, you'll get more than your $30 worth from this nifty little package. Nearly two decades later, Genesis still does what Nintendon't.
SEGA's Mega Drive Ultimate Collection is currently the best compilation on the market. Graphically you don't have to expect miracles, the sound is monotone and the controls are dead simple with three buttons at the most... but it does recreate the atmosphere the old games used to have. For SEGA fans a must-have, but also a good suggestion for all the other people out there thanks to its budget price of 40 euroes.
Taken for what it is, though -- a cheap collection of tons of Genesis games -- the Ultimate Genesis Collection satisfies. No compilation is ever perfect, and Sega and Backbone definitely leave room for improvement. But there's a lot of great gameplay to be had here, and plenty of interesting obscurities for the adventurous to explore -- and all for an enticing price.
Kokoelma ansaitseekin paikkansa hyllyssä yksinkertaisesti mainioiden peliensä lukumäärällä, sillä toteutukseltaan se ontuu. Lukuisat pienet omituisuudet ja köykäinen ekstrasisältö vievät kokoelmalta parhaan terän. Sega Saturnille yli vuosikymmen sitten julkaistu Sonic Jam säilyttää paikkansa parhaana Sonic-kokoelmana.
