It took a while for this game to grow on me, but my friends were crazy about Turok from the start. No doubt I'll be getting a lot of flak for not giving this game an A. I don't think it's quite as fun as Halo, but Turok is consistently intense and exciting, and shooter fans will have a hard time putting down their controller.

Like Tomb Raider, here’s another series I thought was dead and gone after several recent installments ended up falling flat. The later N64 Turoks and the PS2 attempt ended up being mediocre, so I figured this was its last attempt at being a viable franchise. Thankfully, it can actually be a lot of fun. Granted, it does nothing new at all for the FPS genre. This is, quite simply, a dumb, mindless “popcorn” game, but it does it pretty well. While Turok offers virtually nothing new to the genre, it’s still a carnage-filled shooter that’s fun to sit down and play if you’re burned out on COD4 and Halo 3.

When I first played the Turok demo last year, I was a certain Propaganda games had a sure winner on their hands. Turok seemed like it was going to be an early competitor for game of the year, really, how cans you beat taking down monstrous dinosaurs with a combat knife? Unfortunately, this first-person shooter revived from the N64 title doesn’t live up to the status of the original hit. The call to bring the dinosaur hunter Turok back into action daunting task that Propaganda engaged head-on, however a few programming choices cause fun gaming to turn into frustration. Turok is worth a strong rental, however if you’re going to shell out the cash to slit a few danseurs throats remember throwing your controller through your brand new plasma TV is simply not worth it.

So while this Turok may not be of the same quality of Turok: Dinosaur Hunter on the Nintendo 64, but it will leave you will an enjoyable experience. Still, dinosaur throat-slitting can only go so far, and that along with some other cool features isn’t enough to warrant a definitive purchase. It is worth your time, however, so give it a shot if you can.

FPS fans who have played the current crop of games will find a fair amount of fun with Turok. It harkens back to the most simple of games with linear maps and simple kill-or-be-killed gameplay. However, there's nothing here to provide this title with the crossover appeal of a game like Bioshock, or the rabid fanbase of Halo. In the end, Turok is best described as a middle of the road FPS with a little 1997 nostalgia thrown in on the side.

All in all, for PS3 owners this is not as polished a piece of sci-fi as Resistance: Fall of Man. Nor is it as cinematic or clever as Call of Duty 4 or The Orange Box. But for fans of shooters who have already gobbled those up and adore dinosaurs and outright machismo it’s really not as bad as you might think. The choice of good first person shooters on the PS3 is still a trifle limited and with leviathans like Killzone 2 and Resistance 2 being some months away it could tie up any wannabee space cadet reptile ripper quite nicely.

Turok's multiplayer offerings are all pretty bland, too. Dinosaurs exist in the online games as well, but they're AI-controlled bots only meant to add some extra randomness to each match. Instead, they offer little more than an extra target to practice on while passing through an area. Multiplayer, like so many other elements of this game, feels well-intentioned but fails to impress.

In the end, like many Hollywood blockbusters, Turok doesn't leave much of an impression when you're done with it. It's a game about battling dinosaurs, and though it does a good job at that, there's not much more to it. The nondinosaur sequences are fairly conventional for the genre, and it all makes for a solid but not great game.

There's no doubt that Turok can be fun, but ultimately, the feeling of satisfaction that comes with slitting a raptor's throat or pulling off a headshot with your bow is lost in the shuffle of swarming enemies, less than stellar visuals and a story that disappears. Do I recommend Turok for folks just looking for a game to run through with two shotguns in hand? Yes, but I wouldn't expect to walk away from playing with your mind blown.

All in all, Turok is a relatively fun game, and the dramatic stealth moves are mirrored by the awesome array of weapons and modes of firing. However the initial rush is quickly ruined by a poor damage system, shoddy graphics and overuse of bloom effects making many characters in game glow like the Son of God. The story is sadly lacking in depth and the fact that Turok can run no faster than a small child limits the appeal of combat abilities. If you like mindless shooters then this might be your cup of tea (or dinosaur soup?), otherwise save your money and catch up on the AAA games you missed in 2007.

Turok is another in a series of reboots, whether we’re talking about games, movies, or TV shows. The thing that sucks is that you really don’t have much of an idea what is going with Turok or the enemy you are fighting against. With the dinosaurs in the game, it could have been a very interesting game that really set itself apart from other shooters. Instead, we get a boring and mostly easy game with a few places that cause controller-throwing frustration. Hopefully Propaganda can warrant a sequel that advances the plot and creates a better overall game. Otherwise Turok stands to become another game that really has a lot of potential but ultimately comes out to be disappointing.

Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
These issues guarantee that Turok isn't going to win any awards, especially considering 07's stellar FPSes. But the unusual premise, solid writing, and varied play make it worth a look.

Game Freaks 365
In conclusion, Turok does not appear to be a bad game at the surface. Indeed, it has a lot of necessary elements of a good game: a decent length, a recognizable character, online multi-player, a fairly well thought out storyline and so on. Yet these advantages are also its weakness. You never grow to care much for Turok (the character, not the game), the online play is uninspiring and the storyline may explain things well enough, it just can't save a game that suffers from poor graphic design, A.I. and monotony. If you expect to relive Turok with the same amount of vigor and excitement that accompanied it in the 90s, you will only be disappointed by this game.

Turok is matig uitgewerkt.

Turok pissed us off a lot, but ultimately it's a decent shooter with a few elements that are completely awesome and a rampaging difficulty curve. The "stealth" kill animations that play when using the combat knife at close range are excellently satisfying the first ten times you see them, but lose a bit of their luster after you get assaulted by four raptors and get the same forehead-skewering animation four times in a row. Still, when taken in small doses, Turok is brutally and bloodily entertaining. In a way it's almost a casual game, easy to pick up but even easier to put down (and also easy to pick up again once your furious ire has subsided).
