SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 easily represents the biggest leap forward for the series. While previous entries certainly piled on the match types and character rosters, the new creation aspects of SvR 2010 make it the best and most immersive WWE video game experience to date. Between creating your own WWE storylines, playing other community-created stories, taking on one of the six new Road to Wrestlemania modes, or being challenged in multiplayer versus matches (online or off), there are plenty of ways to get into SmackDown vs. Raw 2010. So get in there, get creative, and above all, make sure to lay the SmackDown!
With the long-overdue additions of a story-creation mode and an online community, SvR2010 is a massive step forward for the series’ already-rich feature set, while still continuing the steady improvement of its in-ring fundamentals.
Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 has managed to stay fresh and appealing by authentically recreating the WWE experience and providing a bevy of tools to support user generated content and community. It doesn't reinvent the wheel with new gameplay mechanics or revamped graphics, but WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 excels once again as the definitive pro wrestling game on the market. Fans of the series and pro wrestling alike should definitely put it in their queues.
Like each annual release features seem to come and go, but we hope the changes made in SVR2010 are here to stay. WWE Fans there is no question that SVR2010 is a worth your purchase, this could be the Smackdown game you have always been waiting for, and for all those who have been scared off of the WWE Smackdown series since it debuted on the next-generation consoles, SVR2010 could be the one to you out of retirement and back into the squared circle. WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 might not be the ultimate showcase of the immortals, but it is the best next-generation Smackdown game produced.
For years, SVR fans have been lobbing complaints at THQ and ranting about how to make the franchise better. Although WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 stills stumbles -– CAS can seem limited, clipping is still an issue, CAF isn’t that different, only 10 CAS appearances in a story is weak, etc. -– the whole of the game is great. The gameplay tweaks are welcome and make the experience feel fresh, the presentation is straight from TV, the load times are better than ever, the Road to WrestleMania is still great, you can create your own logos, and the ability to share your stories and characters is invaluable. WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 might not be the greatest wrestling game of all time, but it’s definitely the best the world’s seen in years.
Game Over Online
For the first time in years, a lot of improvements have been made to smaller parts of the gameplay that make a big difference in actual matches, but don’t sound so impressive on the back of the box. Now, the game actually works pretty well as a pro wrestling simulator - not up to par with the Fire Pro or Aki engine games, but it’s easily the best one Yuke’s has done since the Day of Reckoning series, and this may wind up surpassing that - time will tell. Casual fans of wrestling will probably be fine just renting this if they only like a few wrestlers, but anyone wanting to sink their teeth into it will need to buy it - there’s no way someone could enjoy the whole game with just a quick rental. Aside from some lingering issues with the gameplay and horrendous online issues, it’s a well-crafted game that should satisfy fans of the series, and bring back those who have lost faith in it in the past.
SVR 2010 is the ultimate wrestling gamer's sandbox. And the combination of one of the most finely tuned 3D wrestling engines with the ability to create and download so much new content, makes 2010 the best SmackDown title to date. It could stand a few improvements, but otherwise there's not another title I'd recommend more highly.
Game Informer Magazine
Many minor improvements have been made, such as the red marks that appear after too many Flair-esque chops to the chest. Hardcore WWE fans can also manage the heel/face status of the superstars, their brand alliance, and their rivals/allies. These fans are the ones that will appreciate the little changes the most, but Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 is a solid title whether you have a closet full of Austin 3:16 shirts or just catch the occasional episode of Raw.
With the exception of some control tweaks, the pro wrestling genre has remained pretty much unchanged this decade, but Smackdown! vs. Raw 2010 represents the most successful use of the somewhat stale formula. A lot of lingering problems exist, though, and to be honest, the game isn’t close to the massive overhaul that the genre is in need of, but players who have grown used to the collision, AI, and clipping issues will likely enjoy this iterations slightly tighter gameplay, and most customization fans will probably lose their freaking minds over the immense creation suites. It’s easily the best game in the series, and well worth playing, but one has to wonder how many more times THQ can get away with ever-so-slightly improving what is, essentially, the same game.
Come direbbe il Celebral Assassin Triple H, “it’s time to play the game!”.
Overall, WWE Smackdown vs. RAW 2010 is a great wrestling game. The gameplay is more of the same, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it's all of the new creation tools that really make the game shine. The story designer is just plain fun, and if the community really embraces it, will introduce an unlimited amount of replayability. The new paint tool helps make this year's create-a-superstar the most customizable yet, and there is definitely no shortage of content to be enjoyed. If you're a wrestling fan, then you won't be disappointed with this year's Smackdown vs. RAW.
All things considered, Smackdown Vs Raw 2010 is a brilliant package. It will appeal to anyone with more than a casual interest in the world of professional wrestling and seems to build on previous iterations enough to make the upgrade more beneficial than just access to new rosters. There are a few issues with difficulty and some minor presentation concerns but when a game is fun enough, in so many different ways, to keep you playing through the night until the birds start singing then it must be doing a lot of things right.
WWE Smackdown vs RAW 2010 is, we're surprised to say, easily the best game in the series to date, and a must-buy for WWE fans - especially if you've been giving it a wide-berth for a few years. The controls are refined, the game modes are plentiful, the presentation is top class and the customisation features will excite the little kid in WWE fans the world over. It's still a tad clunky at times, with traditional beat 'em up fans likely to be unimpressed by the combat system, but grappling fans who like to imagine what it would be like to wear spandex and lift giant sweaty men above their heads will find that this does the job superbly.
Smackdown is a game that's been continually delivering what fans of the franchise have been asking for and this year isn't any different. This iteration though has a few new features to encourage new players and also provide those that obsess about the sport enough creative freedom to make endless new scenarios. Whilst the stories are good and the feature list impressive, the gameplay engine is a little behind the curve, but that doesn't stop it being a very pleasant distraction, especially if the rest of the time you're playing a hardcore RPG or other in depth time sink.
With so many long-desired improvements and completely new features, SvR 2010 may be the best game of the series. Long time fans and newcomers will appreciate how true this installment sticks to the spirit of the sport, from the various match types to the hilariously cheesy plotlines. On the other hand, repetition, unpredictable levels of difficulty, and a slew of bugs and other oddities certainly hampers the experience.
Smackdown vs. RAW 2010 offers a lot of subtle improvements over last year's game and includes a lot of new, diverse content. The story designer allows anyone to script their own road to Wrestlemania and could conceivably provide new storylines for as long as players embrace it. The game is still plagued by some lingering problems, however, and one has to wonder how much mileage this series can continue to get out of its current model before there isn't enough new stuff to entice players to make another purchase. Whether or not next year brings a significant overhaul remains to be seen, but until then, wrestling fans are sure to enjoy this well-rounded and entertaining product.
WWE Smackdown vs. RAW 2010 could have been so much more, and yet it is more. The enhanced character models, lightning-fast loading times, authentic WWE presentation, reconfigured match types, better CAW stat-building, the new Story Designer, and the online upload/download server mean that most fans of the franchise will clothesline anyone who gets in their way to the register. But just as many fans will be disappointed by the CAW point system, CAW restrictions in Story Designer and as downloadable characters, gender restrictions, the ho-hum Career mode, and the polished but still linear Road to Wrestlemania. It’s not as much “Your World Now” like the debut trailer claims, as it is “Your World Now. Some Restrictions Apply.”
WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 is an impressive new direction for the franchise, as it features a way for players to become directly involved with the other side of professional wrestling: the storylines. Sadly, I've been unable to find a playable match online, thanks to severe latency issues. So I can see myself downloading funny content online and playing it locally, but I just don't see the incentive in trying to find good ranked matches online when the network code is so poor. Still, if you're the creative type, then WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 is a great way for you to try your hand at creating interactive entertainment for your fellow wrestling fans. If you've dreamed of breathing life into the tales of grappling adventure that have until now only lived in your head... well, now you can.
New York Daily News
Road to Wrestlemania mode returns, allowing you to play through set storylines as your favorite wrestlers. Each is well-crafted (by WWE standards, of course), and the mode's presentation does a great job of imitating a real episode. Still, all that quickly gets boring. The career mode is solid, but fighting match after match grows dull. Road to Wrestlemania puts you in the shoes of a pro, but "SvR"'s weak AI means plenty of easy victories. Thankfully, "SvR" includes robust player and story creators. There are plenty of wrestlers, but the player creator lets you infinitely add to that. It's easy to recreate greats like Hulk Hogan and fun to make dream characters like Green Lantern. The story creator lets you one-up WWE's staff and craft your own arc. It takes just moments to change faces to heels, create new tag-teams, and USB keyboard support makes it a snap to type lines for your wrestlers.
Again, this is another annual release where all of the new features in the world don’t address the issues that have been plaguing the series for YEARS, no matter how excellent they may be. For all of the steps forward in community and customisable content, there are some fundamental flaws to the gameplay that are holding the Smackdown games back from becoming essential purchases for wrestling fans, and even allowing them to cross-over to the masses. If this year’s features are expanded on for the next game, brilliant, and all that, but in order to really take things to the next level, perhaps completely reworking the gameplay would be the best thing to add into next year’s release.
WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2010 doesn't fix any of the fundamental issues that the series has had for years, and as this style of gameplay gets another year older, it looks that much more dated. The good news is that all of the stuff surrounding the actual gameplay is getting to be really good. I'd be perfectly fine with never wrestling another match... but I'll probably go back and create a couple of completely ridiculous stories using a bunch of created wrestlers. If that sounds appealing to you (or if you've already come to terms with the way the SmackDown! series plays), this year's game is worth checking out.
