But, come on, these quibbles shouldn't stop you from playing Yakuza 3 any more than the toothpick in a sandwich stops you from eating it. Let me reiterate: this is a fantastic game, with so much fun to throw your way you'd think you were playing wide receiver with Santa Claus as QB. Buy it, and may the soles of your white, crocodile-skin shoes always find the upturned noses of those who underestimated you.

The A.V. Club
The game doesn’t begin in earnest until its fifth chapter, almost eight hours after you start. The story lynchpin—Kiryu’s orphanage is standing in the way of a new resort and an American military base—begins to pull the strings of old and new characters, and the retired bruiser has to return to Kamurocho once again to bust heads and seek justice. From there on out, it’s business as usual. New play features aren’t bountiful. There’s a bit more permanence to weapons for supplementing the excellent brawling, and you learn new fighting moves by—yes, really—blogging. The lack of big changes to the formula is no bad thing, however. Yakuza 3 is workmanlike and archaic in many ways, barely taxing the graphical horsepower of the PlayStation 3, but it’s also unique. Most games make the big city a playground for the absurd. Yakuza 3 is only as absurd as an actual big city.

Game Revolution
Where most other major Japanese titles have long since moved on to distinctly Western environments, situations, and characters, Yakuza 3 refuses to budge. Releasing alongside two of the biggest global releases of this console generation, Yakuza 3 is a massive underdog facing overwhelming odds, but just as Kazuma Kiryu stands up to foreign imperial interests to protect his chunk of Okinawan paradise, Yakuza 3 holds firmly to its principles and undeniable virtues. Its old-school design may turn some people off, but the more open-minded among you are in for one hell of a ride. Besides, any game that can make running an orphanage seem fun has got to be doing something very right.

Yakuza 3 is an anomaly; a game we were never supposed to get but one that we should thank our lucky hoshi we finally did. It won’t be for everyone, but what game is? If you’ve got an interest in Japanese (sub)culture, you’ll invariably get a lot more out of it than those who do not. As an action game it holds up very well, as an RPG it will keep the average quest junkie enthralled, and as a fishing/karoke/arcade sim, it also manages to tick each of those apparently mutually exclusive boxes with a defiant stroke. As a whole, and, more importantly, as a game, it works. Yakuza 3 is a genuinely enjoyable gaming experience. Let’s just hope we don’t have to wait this long for Yakuza 4.

There is some controversy regarding some content which was cut from the Japanese version while it underwent localization, and that's an issue I'll talk about at length in the page following this article. But despite this, Yakuza 3 is a superb game, loaded with action, intrigue, and drama. It's tons of fun to play whether you're working to actively advance the story or just spending a few hours goofing off and running errands for others. It's a shame that this series hasn't yet gained the acclaim and sales in the West that it has in Japan, but if enough people give Yakuza 3 a look and see for themselves what makes it so special, maybe we can bridge that gap just a little more.

These flaws only really stand out due to the quality of the game as a whole however; Yakuza 3 is still a remarkable achievement. Kamurocho might be a fictional location, but it's quite possibly the most well realised city in video game history. Yakuza 3 combines visual splendour with superb sound design to create an unparalleled atmosphere. Although the dated combat might take a back seat to these environments, Yakuza's first outing on the PlayStation 3 feels suitably next generation. While the first two titles in the series were both overlooked and underrated, Yakuza 3 demands to be taken notice of. This isn't only the best game in the series, but possibly the genre as a whole.

Gaming Target
That's a real shame, as the series continues to be entertaining from beginning to end, offering stories full of drama and mystery, an insane amount of potential adventures, and top-notch battle mechanics that let you pound enemies in a wide variety of ways. Who needs guns when you have the ability to pick up a dude by his legs and throw him against a wall? If you're in the market for a sandbox game that's more RPG than GTA, but still want just a smidge of that GTA craziness, Yakuza 3 would be a great a choice, long as you can handle the slow beginning. The payoff is tremendous, and allows access to one of the deepest games on PlayStation 3. For the rest of us – the die-hard fans of the series – Yakuza 3 is a reward for a year of nagging, proof that enough voices can get something accomplished. It's a shame the process is going to be necessary to get Yakuza 4 out, but for now, relish in Yakuza 3, one of the best kept secrets in the business.

The Yakuza IP is still relatively unknown outside of Japan, but those willing to take the plunge will likely come away wondering why Kazuma Kiryu’s exploits haven’t garnered more mainstream attention. Yakuza 3 is a game that cleverly juxtaposes brutal, skull-cracking combat with real world environments and mature, adult-oriented themes – all driven forward by passionate narrative and one of the most magnetic video game protagonists ever. It’s a chance for those living outside of Japan to slip into the many folds of Japanese culture – to experience a way of life unknown to all but 2% of the world’s population. Picking up a bottle of Suntory tea at the convenience store, wooing the heart of a coy hostess girl, or clashing with rival yakuza members on a tower overlooking the neon-lit expanse of Tokyo – whether shockingly real or fiercely dramatized, the experiences of Yakuza 3 are wholly Japanese, completely riveting, and absolutely worth the price of admission.

Game Over Online
Yakuza 3, in short, is worth every penny. It contains a compelling story, intense beat-em-up action and more fun than most games dream of providing. It has a few lulls here and there and some may be put off by its Japanese roots and styles, but give it a short amount of time in your PS3 and you just might discover what the legion of fans spent two years demanding… an instant gaming classic.

PlayStation Lifestyle
Yakuza 3 is an astounding success in bringing the Japanese culture over in a great package of emotions and raw combat. Everything from the presentation to the combat is well done in this fight to the death. You can easily spend 13+ hours on the story alone without even diving into the mini games, battle arena, and side missions. Yakuza 3 will pull you into the fight and won’t let you out until you’re black and blue from head to toe. If you are ready for a taste of Japan and aren’t afraid of a little action, this is the game you need to pick up.

Worth Playing
If you can get over the fact that there was quite a bit of content removed from the North American version of the game, you'll find that Yakuza 3 is a very high-quality title. The graphics might suffer from a few hitches every now and then, but both the controls and sounds are high-caliber stuff. Most importantly, the story is good enough to outweigh the length of the cut scenes and compel you to the end, while the side activities will keep you very busy when you want to take a break from the drama. People who are looking for a great crime tale with a good amount of action will be happy once they put Yakuza 3 in their PS3s. Let's just hope that the next title will make it out of Japan intact.

Yakuza 3 is definitely a unique and rewarding experience I would recommend to all gamers. If you like beat’em up games with RPG elements, this one will definitely keep you entertained. However, if you are expecting something fully immersive and less action oriented, this game is NOT Shenmue 3 or J-Heavy Rain. If anything, I would compare this game to that beloved Wii gem, No More Heroes – for its unique and enjoyable approach to what could otherwise be a pretty dull genre!

GamingTrend
While I hesitate to call Yakuza 3 a sandbox game, it certainly provides you with an open game where you can participate in a huge number of minigames and side quests. It also offers a fairly lengthy and intriguing main storyline. The main story itself takes about 20 hours to complete, but you will no doubt find yourself getting sucked into the various other activities and sub-plots found in the game, further extended the value of Yakuza 3. Fans of the series will definitely want to pick this one up if they haven’t already. Gamers who haven’t played Yakuza 1 or 2 shouldn’t let that stop them from enjoying Yakuza 3. Sega has made sure to include enough of the back-story so that any newcomer to the series can quickly catch up. Sure there are some questionable design decisions in the game, but the overall experience is so good that any blemish can be easily overlooked. Don’t let Yakuza 3’s release get overlooked.

The storytelling is masterful, the combat is incredibly fun and there’s more minigames than you can shake a stick at. What more could you possibly want?

Gamer Limit
Despite its slow start, Yakuza 3 shapes up to become a fulfilling hybrid adventure, packed with equal parts sandbox, JRPG, and beat-’em-up action. After returning to Tokyo, the story really fleshes itself out, becoming a riveting narrative backed by gorgeous cinematics and some truly inspiring voice acting, regardless of the language choice. Top it all off with excessive brutality and a devastating medley of weapons, and Yakuza 3 shouldn’t be passed up. You’re in for a treat.

IGN
If wrote about everything in this game, you’d have a 10-page review on your hands, but the long and short of it is that Yakuza 3 is a great experience. The story’s cool, the fighting’s fun, and there’s so much to do. (Did I mention beating it opens up an adventure mode, fighting tournament and other goodies?) The game is rough around the edges – it has issues when it comes to pacing and repetition, the Japanese-only voice track will turn some people off, and it does look like a game that’s been out awhile -- but all of these issues are just bumps in the road on what should be an enjoyable ride for folks looking to beat in some faces and wander the streets of Japan.

Yakuza 3 is the best game in the series thus far. It fixes a lot of the issues present in the first two games and adds a wealth of new mini games, side missions, and features a deeper and more personal story that will reel you in. If Sega can give the series the treatment it deserves and adds a bit more polish and attention to the franchise for U.S. audiences, Yakuza 3 can rise to become an iconic series here. If you're interested in a game with a great story and a lot to do, this one is for you.

Kazuma Kiryu's story is more fun and better looking than it's ever been. The fighting and exploring are solid and stay fresh the whole way through. Even a bit of cut content can't keep the game from being an engaging brawler and RPG with one of the most engaging stories around. Yakuza isn't going to make any game of the year lists. For its fans though, this is one of the big ones worth remembering and talking about. It's great fun all the way through and it proves that Sega is still a game company even if their Sonic games suggest otherwise. Absolutely check this one out and spread the word. Sega sure didn't bother.

Yakuza 3 doesn't completely defy description and, if pushed, I'd be forced to draw a parallel with one of Sega's other videogame adventure series by saying it most closely resembles Shenmue. Don't be dissuaded by that comparison; while Shenmue was largely an exercise in boredom that crawled along at a snail's pace with as much personality as a housebrick, the two games do share the same narrative and gameplay structure. Yakuza 3 excels thanks to an irresistibly likeable hero, a world pulsing with life, brutally fulfilling battles, and a good 30 hours of core story missions and secondary character tasks. Plus, if we're comparing Yakuza 3 with Shenmue, it doesn't involve mundane forklift employment, time-restricted exploration, and a questionable homoerotic search for sailors.

However, you should be able to get past these drawbacks because, as I’ve said, the entertainment factor really is very high. You’ll want to follow the story, the battling, despite being a little too simplistic and repetitive, is almost never boring, and there’s always plenty to do. Exploration is encouraged as you will discover plenty of new and useful items and pieces of equipment, and the incentive to get into fights is obvious (experience, duh). So, Yakuza 3 is definitely worthwhile if you think you’ll enjoy the premise and you’ve always wanted something like a cross between Streets of Rage and an exotic, quirky Grand Theft Auto. The good vastly outweighs the bad, and that’s what’s most important.

Yakuza 3 is a pretty fun title to play, and it's not hard to get lost in its wide variety of sidestories and minigames. It's not without flaws, and things like the sloppily-cut content and a story that isn't as strong as others in the series stand out as two big ones. Still, it's a great title to play through, even if it's your first foray into the Yakuza series. In the end, tons of content, lots of things to see and do, and a fighting system that really makes you feel like you can take on the world come together to make a great game that offers a lot of play.

So Yakuza 3 is, in many respects, SEGA playing it safe to ensure they maintain the core audience that have built up via the first two games. The story is filled with the same sense of cinematic melodrama that seems to appeal to so many, and most of the pre-existing gameplay has been built upon and tweaked. Having said that, there is nothing really new here and, outside of the often stunning graphics, there is little to convince the player that this game couldn't have been pulled off on the PS2. Definitely a must-buy for fans of the series, but those approaching the title with no prior experience should perhaps tread with a little caution. While there is plenty to be gained from playing Yakuza 3, it is in some respects an acquired taste, slotting very much into the Metal Gear crowd with its long spells of narrative, though it does provide some very satisfying action to compliment this.

There's no question that the world of Yakuza is a fascinating place to be and a lot different from possibly any other game you're going to play this year; and we like that. If you've played Yakuza before you'll know exactly what to expect, it's simply more of the same. If you happen to be a newcomer to the franchise, however, then bring with you an open mind, give it time, and though it's sure to test your patience, you may just find yourself, as we did, falling in love with its weird and wonderful world and explosive fight sequences.

For all the little issues that creep up in this game, Yakuza 3 is definitely a title I highly recommend. It may take a little more patience than other games in the sandbox and beat ‘em up genres, but you’re rewarded with one of the most interesting stories, characters, and fun to use combat in gaming today. It’s not quite the breakthrough hit I’d hoped it would be, and is likely not going to ever be more than a cult classic, but Yakuza 3 is still highly enjoyable, and would be a great addition to anyone’s library.

A big, exciting martial arts film wrapped up in one of the most brilliantly stupid and consistently entertaining game worlds you’ll ever find. Graphically, it might be a bit last-gen, but we doubt you’ll care when you can beat men to death with bikes.

Yakuza 3 brings together enough different gameplay styles that it's more or less pointless to assign it to one particular genre. It's the way it combines these individual parts and invests you in its world that really matters. Brutal fighting carried out by a character that constantly grows more powerful, a solid story that succeeds in involving you despite sentimentality and silliness, and exceptionally well-realized environments make Yakuza 3 a powerful experience that simply could not exist outside of videogames.

For a game that could well have been overlooked for a Western release entirely, the removal of a few minor elements, while frustrating, is a small price to pay. What remains is a relentlessly enjoyable action-RPG, which offers a unique insight into Japanese culture despite its exaggerations. The Western version of Yakuza 3 might have suffered a few heartbreaking cuts, but it's still intriguing at every turn and shouldn't be missed.

At the end of the day, Yakuza 3 is like the video game equivalent of a foreign film. To those that are tempted to indulge in it, we implore you to go and judge Yakuza 3 for yourself as it serves as a great combination of brawling gameplay, mini-game compilation and light RPG. For those that are not open to the prospect of playing through a foreign title, nothing is likely to change your opinion on the matter.

Yakuza 3 does little to push the series forward and does even less to win over players who weren’t interested in the first two games in the series. Saying that, with its subtle new features, great storyline and first class presentation, Yakuza 3 will certainly provide a fantastic experience for those willing to give the game a try and will undoubtedly please long standing fans of the series. Will Yakuza 3 prove the break out hit that Sega hopes it will be? Probably not – It will however remain a cult game adored by those who embrace its quirky but wholly undeniable charms.

After a few hours you’ll feel empathy for Kazzy and be above the whole getting into fights thing. Instead you might just wander down to the beach with some worms to go fishing or head into town to drink a glass of 1,080 yen whiskey and eat some pork gyoza. Or maybe have a chat with the whopping great big cast of over 350 full-bodied characters through-out the game. Yakuza 3 has more depth to it than the Titanic and although this strange combination of gameplay elements might deter a lot gamers, you just can’t help but admire it at the same time.

Overall, Yakuza 3 is a great game but you’ll have to survive the first four levels to get the to the exciting bit. It also has a near endless supply of side missions and tasks that you can take on, adding to its value. If you like RPG elements in your action games, you’ll like Yakuza 3.

Technically flawed and butchered in localisation it may be, but to deny yourself the chance to experience one of gaming’s most finely realised characters in so unique and authentic a setting, for the sake of a few loading screens, invisible walls or the lost chance to buy expensive handbags for simpering hostesses in the futile hope of some virtual petting, would be a mistake, and certainly not conduct becoming Kazuma Kiryu. While nowhere near as technically accomplished as its Western peers Yakuza 3 nonetheless deserves to be experienced for the depth of its central character and its peerless depiction of contemporary metropolitan Japan.

It's a tiny bit disappointing in some ways that Sega did not treat Yakuza 3 with the utmost care, because if it had, this title would have been a guaranteed home run. It's been a long time since I found myself so deeply invested in a Mafia story, but Yakuza 3's plot is so perfectly woven that it stays engrossing from start to finish. If you own a PlayStation 3 and you've been on the fence about giving the Yakuza series a whirl, don't be afraid. Yakuza 3 has tons to offer for RPGamers of all kinds, and if nothing else, you can at least kick loads of gangster ass while taking names.

There really is a lot of content in the game once you add up all the mini-games, side quests, story mode, epic boss battles, customization of weapons and armour as well as places to visit. It’s really hard to define the game to one particular genre due to the variety available, but an action-adventure RPG would probably be most fitting. If you like your games huge with a sort of sandbox feel to them then you definitely can’t go wrong with Yakuza 3. There is lot to do as well as a few added extras in the local release which unfortunately weren’t available in the review code I received. One hopes that the recently released Yakuza 4 in Japan will be released locally a lot quicker than this version especially as a fifth game has just been announced.

Don't let the fact that you haven't previously tackled a title from the Yakuza franchise put you off picking up this game. While the learning curve for the story starts off a little steep, by the end of the ludicrous, action-packed storyline, everything falls into place and you have formed genuine connections with endearing characters. Yakuza 3's detailed and living environments, engaging story, and abundance of extra things to see and do make it an entertaining ride and a great addition to your brawler collection.

With the port of Yakuza 3 SEGA wants to thank the Western fans for their "loyalty" to the franchise. Unfortunately the game still suffers from the same problems its Japanese predecessor that's already a year old. SEGA would have done well to use the time to making these small "bugs" disappear. Luckily Yakuza 3 also does a lot of things good! The game manages to bring the Japanese culture to life, contains easily a hundred sidequests and mini-games next to the main storyline, and has a robust combat system. Yakuza 3 is the best in its genre, even if it's the only in its genre...

Still, if you decide to pick up Yakuza 3, you're getting a lot of bang for your buck. There's so much optional content involved that you'll be able to keep yourself busy for a long time, and most of the mini-game like activities, like the approach to golf found here, are actually well implemented and fun. If you can get past the slow moving plot line, then you'll find a lot to enjoy with this particular chapter. If you're planning on coming into this new, then I urge you to at least try and seek out the first two games, they're a great indicator of what you're getting into, and they'll be necessary to give you enough background into the characters of this particular game so that you'll actually give a damn when this guy shoots that guy and who that guy is and how he ties into the dude from the first game and so on. You can skate by with the flashback stories at the beginning, but I don't think you'll really appreciate it if you skip the first two games entirely.

Certainly Yakuza 3 has a lot going for it. However, it's still a niche title that will only truly appeal to a rather narrow audience. If you're expecting a Japanese take on GTA, guess again. If you want pure action, you'll be bored to tears by the lengthy cutscenes. If you're hoping for complex, RPG-like leveling mechanics, you'll be disappointed. Yakuza 3 is a quirky hodgepodge of various genres that rewards the patient japanophile looking to kick a little ass. For everyone else, if Yakuza 3 never sounded particularly cool to you, you can easily let this one pass.

As a whole this sequel remains too repetitive and long-winded to recommend to all and it's a shame the graphics aren't more improved from the PS2. But many will take great pleasure from its voluminous contents, whether it's the bone-breaking combat, endless mini-games or bizarre humour. Or merely the fact that it's proof that Sega can still make games the way they, and other Japanese developers, used to.

That said it’s hard to fault Yakuza 3 when taken at face value. This is a completely unapologetic game for fans of the original. It lacks many of the luxuries of modern videogames (auto-save for Yakuza 4 please) and requires an understanding of Japanese current affairs, as well as geography and language to truly get the most out of it. But as an entire package it brings a great deal of content for your money. Not exactly groundbreaking, but enjoyable none-the-less, rarely can a game be summarised with the terms ‘camp’ and ‘ultra-violent’, yet Yakuza 3 manages to pull it off with ease.

Yakuza 3 does offer an involved, lengthy story for those with the patience to wade through the repetition and annoyances. Fans who have followed Kazuma through the previous installments should enjoy watching him return to mob life to protect his orphanage. Yakuza 3 carves its own identity and characters, making it more than just “Grand Theft Auto in Japan.” If you don’t feel a strong connection with the story, however, the dated gameplay mechanics and lack of polish do a fine job of sapping most of the enjoyment you could potentially receive.
