If you like the Assassin's Creed series, then you'll most likely enjoy Bloodlines as well, but it's not a guarantee. The game certainly has its problems, but they are generally overwhelmed in the face of great technical prowess, the big open-world, and impressive fluidity of gameplay. We only wish it was a bit longer, because the storyline will only take about five hours to get through.

As mentioned, Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines is a solid and faithful recreation of the original Assassin’s Creed that has been moulded quite well for portable play, while fans of the franchise will definitely get the most of this. The compromise of smaller environments has allowed for more focused objectives and very frequent and generous checkpoints. However, the game’s inconsistency in the mechanics, lack of evolution and rather apparent lack of polish hurt a good and solid portable recreation, while players with no experience will probably be left out in the cold. Otherwise, there isn’t too much more that could have been done.

Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines may bear a strong resemblance to the stealth-driven, sandbox action-adventure, however it doesn’t live up to its title. Sure, all the pieces are there to make a quality side-story, but Ubisoft Montreal and Griptonite Games didn’t quite put them together correctly. The overall experience is definitely fun, but poor platforming, dull exploration, a forgettable story, and an almost nonexistent stealth aspect (the staple of the series) keep Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines from becoming a must-own title for the PlayStation Portable.

Assassin's Creed Bloodlines is a game that will only appeal to those who are already enthralled with the Assassin's Creed universe. It successfully replicates the basic feel of Altair's previous adventure, but it also plays into the weaknesses of the PSP hardware. Three dimensional free running cannot be successful without camera control and the combat is one dimensional. The developers did the best they could within the confines of a game design that for now, can only properly work on the big screen.

Again, Ubisoft managed to create a much better portable Assassin's Creed game this time. Even though it's a bit rough (bad A.I., the same repetitive mission grind of AC, the out-of-character boss battles, the approximately five-hour length), Bloodlines is saved by its generally solid adherence to the Assassin's Creed formula. Using the hidden blade to brutally counter some Templar makes up for silly boss fights and lame levels -- plus I get also some decent swords for Ezio's villa.

Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines isn’t a great game. There are better platformers on the handheld, like Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters, and there are better action games to choose from, like God of War: Chains of Olympus. Bloodlines combines aspects of both of those games into something a little less impressive and coherent, but somehow still entertaining. Getting past the game’s shortcomings isn’t easy, but if you’re able to deal with a wonky camera, less than impressive graphics, and combat that’s at times insultingly simple, you’ll find that Bloodlines is mildly entertaining. So it’s got that going for it.

Bloodlines is a brave attempt at an open 3D world which, while visually breathtaking, is let down by repetitive gameplay and awkward camera controls.

Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines is about as good as I could imagine a game in the series being on the PSP, but that doesn't automatically make it an excellent game. Control issues to do with the use of a manual camera, the PSP's lack of horsepower and a series of missions that focus almost entirely on killing make this an Assassin's Creed game that lacks the quality seen in the console games. Altair fans might want to see what he got up to after the original game, but the experience isn't one best suited to a handheld.

D+PAD Magazine
Despite some obvious talent on the part of Griptonite Games, Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines smacks a little too much of an unloved, unwanted by-product birthed from the success of the franchise. It doesn’t tie into the main series properly, directly contradicts the very beginning of Assassin’s Creed II and, more urgently, fails to achieve the objective its set itself: to serve as scaled-down but fully functional replica of the original game. It’s still one of the best PSP games in a while, though.

We can’t wrap our heads around the “why” of Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines. Not its existence, mind you. We love a good mix of portable platforming and swordplay, even if the PSP is prone to awkward analog controls and intolerable cameras – and this is no exception. But Bloodlines adopts too many ideas from its origins rather than the impressively improved sequel, which seems completely counterproductive. There’s a lot to like about Assassin’s Creed on PSP, provided you’re tolerant of its heavy flaws, and we love that you can connect it to your PS3 and unlock new weapons in Assassin’s Creed 2 – we just wish the developers had looked more to the future rather than the past when creating it.

Had developer Griptonite expanded the scope of the city and cleaned up the guard A.I., Bloodlines would've been on the same level as previous Assassin's Creed games. As it stands, it's merely a side chapter instead of a main attraction. Still, if you need an assassination game on the go, you should kill a few hours with it.

Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines not only fails to live up to the high standards set by its console brethren, it also fails to deliver an experience worthy of your time and money. If you own a 360 or a PS3, and are looking for a worthy successor to Assassin's Creed, pass on this and pick up the proper sequel.

Meristation

Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines doesn't get it. On the surface, it offers many of the features you'd want from an Assassin's Creed game on the PSP. It puts you in control of Altair, the first game's nimble protagonist, and sends you on a mission to assassinate your Templar enemies, who are equally eager to plunge their swords into you. If you delve a little deeper, however, you'll find that Bloodlines skimps on what makes the console games so special. The joy of rooftop running has been diminished by flawed platforming and smaller environments, bustling cities have been replaced by barren districts on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, and AI problems render the stealthy approach all but irrelevant. Bloodlines still delivers the brief bloody thrills you get from a well-timed counterattack, but on the whole, it is a neutered and unsatisfying adventure.

GamePro (US)
With two stellar installments under its belt, Ubisoft has established Assassins Creed as a bona-fide franchise on the same level as Metal Gear and Halo. The downside of this is the inevitable flood of related products that hope to cash-in on the name recognition factor. Bloodlines, a spin-off title for the PSP, tries to live up to the high bar but it doesn't come quite close, resulting in a flawed experience whose greatest asset is that it doesn't completely sully the franchises reputation.

So, here's where I tell you that fans will like this game and dilettantes would do well to stay away, though really there's not enough here for anyone other than the hardest of the hardcore, dying to get their knife-to-the-jugular fix after blowing through Assassin's Creed II. If that's you then you could do worse for your PSP, but most gamers are probably better just sticking with the real deal.

Eurogamer.net (UK)
You could argue that it doesn't make sense to compare Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines to its PC and console relatives, which it can't hope to replicate, and I would normally agree - except they are exactly what it is trying to replicate, with mediocre results. For the record though, platform game fans would be better served by Jak & Daxter, while action game fans can go back to God of War. Bloodlines isn't a terrible or frustrating game, but it's as unnecessary as all those chickens.

Given that it shares the limited mission variety of the original game, rather than its sequel, this manages to quickly squander most of its appeal. Especially once you start just ignoring guards, as you race to the next bad guy resetting load screen with them all in tow like some bad Benny Hill sketch. Ubisoft should accept the game doesn't work on a portable and be thankful the real sequel turned out so well.

Sure you can link up this game with the PS3 version of Assassin's Creed II for money and weapon unlocks, but even that's not a good enough reason to spend the five or six hours needed to get to the end of the game. Simply put, there are too many negatives here and too many other excellent action games on the PSP to justify spending time with this jumbled mess. This is one set of memories best left forgotten.
